This may be a dumb-assed question to ask but why are there so many
fundamentalist Christian broadcasts in English on shortwave?

They look at it as a cost effective way to spread the word of the bible
where the internet, roads, and the power lines end. Most of the world is
illiterate.

They also feel it's their duty to reach the far ends of the world.
Some of the station are a "good catch" and you have to work to log them and
they will QSL you.

I also think most of the countries that have the highest illiteracy
rate
also have the largest population of fundamentalist Muslims..

Wrong. They are broadcasting to a domestic audience that, like all
cults, need constant reinforcement of the central tenets of the
delusion. North Korea right here in Kansas.

BS,

Christian Radio Broadcasts : It is a Message of Hope
and Salvation for those seeking one or both around the
World.
* It can Go where Christian Ministers and Evangelist
may not be allowed to; or fear to go.
* It is supported by the giving of the Faithful and is not
done as a Commercial Activity.

Shortwave Radio : It crosses Borders without a Passport.
* One of the most Cost-effective Delivery Systems for :
What It Does; Where It Can Go; and Be Distributed To
Around the World from a Centralized Point.
* It is hard to Stop the Message from Getting-Through;
and being Received by anyone in a Country that is allowed
to have a low-cost AM/FM Shortwave Radio.
* Costs the Shortwave Radio Listeners Nothing -cause-
It's "Free" Over-the-Air Radio.

Many good (and serious) answers else-thread. I'll add that Christianity
is a proselytizing religion, so there is a moral imperative in many
expressions of fundamentalist Christianity to Go Forth And Spread The Word.

Since Islam is also a proselytizing religion, we should expect a fair
amount of similar sorts of shows. In my limited experience, this seems
to be the case. If you hunt around different parts of the world you can
pick up more than a few similar Islamic stations, mostly out of North
and East Africa, and the Middle East. I am, of course, assuming that
these stations provide the same purpose as their Christian counterparts
in spreading The Word. Which might be untrue, since I don't understand
Arabic. The French stations out of North and West Africa certainly
covered much the same ground with respect to the One True Religion.

Many of the strongest Christian stations I pick up are in North America
or English-speaking areas of the northern hemisphere; so easier to pick
up by folks living where those commonly propagate. So, there might be
some self-selecting going on since it is so easy for most of us to hear
these guys. There might be a little bit of preaching to the converted
going on, maybe.

Well I suppose the obvious answer is because there are a lot of
interested listeners willing and able to tune into the religious
broadcasts on HF. Once upon a time the same question could have been
asked about government sponsored broadcast stations like the BBC.

Additionally, since most churches are on a tight budget the relatively
low cost of an HF broadcast allows them to cover a larger area than
would be possible with multiple FM or MW broadcasts. Finally long
range HF broadcasts would be of interest to those churches who want to
broadcast their message overseas.

I tried the nice approach, the ignore tactic, and neither was
