I'm sure it works to boost signals. Too bad it isn't mounted in a
frame to allow directional tuning.

I personally believe the twin coil ferrite antenna above is a bit
on the expensive side. However, in the end, it's your choice. I
have used the Select-A-Tenna years ago and indeed it does work
rather well relative to the built-in antenna in most portable AM
radios. Since the Terk is using the same principal of design, I
can't see why it wouldn't work equally as well for the MW band.
If you snoop around a bit on the Web, you could probably find
schematics and plans on how to build your own. The design is
fairly simple. The convenience factors are not having to
construct it yourself and that the molded plastic makes it easy
to keep/store and move over the years.
I've even wondered if anyone has attempted such a design with a
Hula Hoop with a couple of holes drilled at one end to run many
turns of wire within. This along with the simple capacitive
tuning element should provide some rather good results for the MW
band.

I own a Select-A-Tenna; it works well for boosting MW signals,
especially in the daytime. I also own two Wellbrook ALA 330S Active
Loop Antennas. This antenna is NOT designed for MW reception, yet it
works quite well, much better than expected on MW.
Finally, I also own the C. Crane Twin-Coil Ferrite Antenna in which
you are interested. Frankly, I do not DX very much on the MW band, but
I have found that the C. Crane, which is in my den, works at least as
well (and sometimes better) than my Wellbrooks, mounted higher up in
my attic, do on MW. I have the antenna module placed on a window sill
on which I can rotate it. Placing it on an inexpensive lazy susan near
a window is also a possibility.
If you are indeed serious about MW DXing, your $99.95 will be money
VERY well spent. This product is, in my opinion, superb. It can be
used powered with batteries or via its AC adapter which is very quiet
and it comes with connectors for just about any common radio. (It can
even be used inductively just like the Select-A-Tenna if your radio
has no antenna input.) I also recommend buying at least the 25-foot
extension cable (and, maybe the 50-foot one as well or, if money is a
bit tight and you can't afford both, just the 50-foot one in place of
the 25-foot one) and one, two, or more of the $4.95 couplers. These
accessories are well-worth their cost.
This, again in my opinion, is an extremely well-designed product that
does everything that is claimed for it. It is also very well
constructed. I have owned mine for three or four years.
I'm quite sure you will be pleased with it.

I'm really not surprised that others have thought of the Hula Hoop
antenna long before now! I DO appreciate all the links to the groups.
I got looking at the design and as I remember (as a kid) it seemed to
be larger than 26" or so in diameter. In fact, I do notice that the
good folks at WHAM-O amongst others offer various sizes of the hoop.

Mr. Mentor,
Nice set of Links about the Hula-Hoop and building a
AM/MW & SW Antenna using a Hula-Hoop as the
'form' for the Antenna Element.
The 'standard' Size for the average Hula-Hoop seams
to be in the 36" to 39" {Yard & Metre Size} Range with
around 42"s being on the big-side and 32"s being for
young Children.
That being said a Yard or Metre Size AM/MW Loop
Antenna using a Hula-Hoop as a Frame can produce
some very impressive results for an AM/MW DXer.
