I have heard the advertisement that the new CCrane has the twin coil
for BCB reception. How is the twin coil in this radio the same as the
actual add-on? They can't fit all that in the radio. ;-)

Is it really the same antenna as the add-on? I have wanted to get the
Twin Coil then I heard the commercial, what gives?

NO, it is NOT. It is a twin coil antenna but NOT the same as the add
on. I have the radio and was suprised that medium wave reception is a
tad BELOW that of the CCRadio. It's a great radio. It's better on FM
than the CCRadio, and excellent on shortwave for a radio in this price
range. But the twin coil advertising CCrane is doing is very
misleading if not really misrepresenting the product.

FO&A,

Of Ferrite Rods and Twin Coils :

Basically Claim this is Marketing-Hype !

+ + Yes that Ferrite Rod does have Two {Twin} Coils on it;
one at each end.

- No the CCRadio-SW does not have an independent Turner

- - IIRC the Ferrite Rod in the CCRadio-SW (6.5") is shorter
than the Ferrite Rod in the Twin Coil AM Antenna (8.0").

than the simple FM Folded Dipole Antenna or a Set of TV

used inside the House and does not required it to be outside.

BCBlazysusan,

Irrespective of C Crane Co.'s "Twin Coil Ferrite(tm) AM Antenna"
http://www.ccrane.com/images/highres/ccradio-sw.htm
Marketing Hype the CCRadio-SW {Redsun RP2100 Radio} is
http://www.ccrane.com/radios/shortwave-radios/ccradio-sw.aspx
an Excellent Stand-a-Lone AM/FM/SW Radio and is even better
for AM/MW DXing when mounted on a Lazy Susan along with
a 'passive' AM/MW Loop Antenna.

If you even have to ask this question, let me tell about this bridge
in NYC which I have for sale CHEAP ...

Best,

Joe

P.S. C. Crane has ALWAYS been known for its "hype" - sometimes it
actually does reflect the quality of the particular product being
described (e.g. The CCrane Twin-Coil Antenna) but, just as often, NOT
(e.g. the CCRadio-SW).

Ummm, exactly the reason I asked. You say "has always been known for
hype" then follow that with "sometimes it actually does reflect the
quality".....that is why the question was asked. ;-)

I can understand your asking the question and I apologize for the
"flip" answer.

Here are a few resources for you to examine. The first one is
Passband's:

Passband also has some other news items about this radio. Go to their
home page and click on < All Updates: Receiver and Antenna News (40) >

And here are RadioIntel's reviews of both products:

< http://www.radiointel.com/review-redsunrp2100.htm > plus <
http://www.radiointel.com/review-ccrane_twincoil.htm >.

There are some other review sites as well. Just "Google" either
product.

Even though some of these reviews are older, it should immediately be
apparent that, just on the basis of its size, the standalone C. Crane
Twin-Coil Antenna would be totally unable to fit into a radio the size
of the Redsun RP-2100/CCRadio-SW.

I hate to say this, but it appears to me that MW DXing (for which the
Twin-Coil Antenna was designed) may be on its way out. If IBOC becomes
widespread, you can forget about any serious listening on the MW band.
Try it for yourself. With any MW station using IBOC, you will hear
nothing but noise 10 kHz below and 10 kHz above, especially at night.
And if you try to listen to a somewhat distant MW station that is
suffering from selective-fading distortion and you turn on your
synchronous detection circuit (if your radio has one - the Redsun/C.
Crane does not) to eliminate this, just wait until you hear the racket
in the background of the station if it has its IBOC turned on!

In my opinion, MW (AM) IBOC is a total disaster. Should the MW band go
totally digital, what might happen to communications in the event of a
regional disaster? The only AM signals that can reliably reach long
distances, necessary in a country the size of ours, is ANALOG AM. But
I digress ...

From the reviews, I gather that the Redsun RP-2100 in its various
guises is a satisfying radio to its owners. If I were buying one, I
should buy from Universal Radio which sells the Kaito version for
$50.00 less than C. Crane sells its version:

< http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/portable/2100.html > vs. <
http://www.ccrane.com/radios/shortwave-radios/ccradio-sw.aspx >

These two radios are essentially identical and, while both have a form
of "twin-coil" ferrite rod MW antenna, it is NOT the standalone C.
Crane Twin-Coil one, regardless of what is in C. Crane's "blurb.".

I myself own one of these C. Crane Twin-Coil Antennas (and it is quite
good) though I do not know how much use it will be in the relatively
near future. I do not own a Redsun RP-2100 (et al.).

Again, I do apologize for my previous and rather unhelpful reply to
you and I hope you and yours have a happy and healthy new year.

Best,

Joe

Thank you Joe for the nice response and informative links, plenty of
good reading there between those and RHF's links. I know fairly much
about the hobby and all, I had just heard the advertisement and
something didn't sound right and as the old saying goes "if something
doesn't sound right" etc. etc. ;-)

I use a couple of Hammarlunds one with the Heathkit Q- Multiplier for
a little added punch. Two real nice loops - one was made by Dave
Schmarder he has a link out there somewhere.

Happy New Year and brilliant DX

Joe,
Apology accepted, no problem. I agree with you in that I would be very
sad if everything went digital. Having said that, I feel that analog
will always be on in the wings waiting. I just don't see the sense in
all this crap to be honest with you. If there was truly a legitimate
reason and it was better - I'd be all for it.

I've listened to AM stations all over the US from Ohio and really
enjoy hearing the different types of talk from different areas. Oh
well, we can only hope for the best.

It uses the same antenna that the Redsun radio does. Redsun
advertises it properly because it's no big deal - all stick antennas
are designed this way. Crane is selling you a lot of sizzle but not
much steak I'm afraid.
