First, it's none of your business what the seller asks -- if you don't like it,
don't bid on it.
Secondly, "too high" depends on whether or not it sells at that price, not your
(or my) opinion.
Thirdly, the price of one Kenwood has very little to do with the value of a
different model.

Since the TS850S is a much better receiver than a R5000 (if you dispute
that, well, it's your opinion alone, for the most part), AND has a 100
watt transmitter in the same box, it should be worth more.
I've owned 2 R5000's. Nice audio, but $700 is just not a realistic price
for a 20 year old, or close to it, receiver that runs very hot on AC
power.

I have no idea who the seller is. I'm just sick of all the price cops who go

grins, right? I had two of them, and they ran way too hot on AC power
for my tastes. Those regulators were super hot. If you would have taken
the cover off, it was more than obvious. I wonder how many R5000's
failed due to one of those regs cooking itself to death.

That is correct the $700 is the Buy-It-Now Price.
Figure a 70% to 85% Reserve Price based on the
$700 Buy-It-Now Price : The Reserve would be in
the range of $490 to $595.
Seems to be Two (2) "Interested" Bidders so far.
imho - at this price-point there are several other
swl receivers that are worth considering ~ RHF

The absolute most I personally would go would be about $500. No way even
$600. My luck would be it would work ok, except the keypad would start
the keybounce thing.
There are R71A's, NRD525's, etc out there for a lot less. I would take a
525 over a 5000, anytime. For $700, you're close to NRD535 territory.

I haven't heard of one. The receiver has been around since 1987 so I
would assume that stories of R5000 receivers burning up from "super
heat" would be all over the net by now. How many failures have you
read of that are traceable to overheating. Indeed how many of those
receivers have failed for any reason. Not many in my experience.

Dont know either, but I know mine ran HOT. And just for the lost energy
alone it was enough for me to decide and buy an external 13,8v supply.
Now I can safely put something on top of the rx again (like a logbook or
guide) without having to worry about all that heat...

And I've owned stereos that put out some heat but ran for years. The
real question is whether Kenwood engineers considered the heat in the
radio design. Given the radio's excellent design, high performance
and record of reliability I suspect they did. The radio was well
vented so the heat was dissipated.

FWIW - To the best of my knowledge more
Kenwood R-5000 Owner/Users have reported
"Problems" with their Receivers : That are
related to Bad {Intermitant} Contact between
the Circuit Boards and the Receiver's Metal
Frame : Then any other 'problem' of note.

The simple Fix is to Loosen the Circuit Board
Mounting Screws and CLEAN the 'contact areas'
between the Metal Frame and the Circuit Boards
with-out Remove the Screws. A little squirt of
Contact Clearner usually does a very good job
of 'cleaning' the surfaces of the Contact Areas.
Give it a Minute or two to Dry -and- then re-set
all the Mounting Screws. Do this One Circuit
Board at-a-time and every thing should be A-OK !
- - - This simple Fix should last for several years
and is all that is necessary to have the Receiver
Running HOT and Trouble Free - just like normal.

I don't know how many failed, but I've touched those regulators and they
were hot enough to burn my fingers. In my book, that's too hot! You may
disagree, but for me, it was a good reason to run it on 12 volts. Just
like my Icom R7100 another hot runner on AC power, it ran too hot for
it's own good.

And that's with the case off. I've never had a stereo amp or receiver
that ran as hot as both my R5000's did, and I've had a lot of equipment

It's like some of the gun auctions, some guns get prices way too high
for a while, then they drop down to a decent amount, and then rise
again. I lucked out and got 3 of the last ones I bought on the "low
side". One of them, in the same condition mine is just sold for over
$125 higher. Makes me happy to see that, unless I'm bidding.

One of my R5000s didn't have the replacement filter when I got it, I
hoped it wouldn't be as bad as I heard it was without it, but I was
wrong, it was horrible. I got the Kenwood one, YK88 (I think) for $75 at
a local hamfest from some old guy. The box looked horrible, and he was
kind of one of those guys who always has a ton of HF rigs for high
prices, but I went for it anyway, and it worked perfectly. I made money
on it when I sold it about a year later.
Maybe Ebay might have one for a sane price..
