I am starting to feel embarrassed with all these questions I have been
asking. While The Passport To World Band Radio has a wealth of
information in it as far as they reviews, I get excited about a
certain one as I am reading the PROS. The comes the CONS. After that,
the verdict. I am so lost. The CONS seem to be more numerous on all
the radios.

I was thinking of getting the Sony ICF-SW7600GR,
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-ICF-SW7600GR-Shortwave-Receiver-Reception/dp/B00006IS4X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1209174325&sr=1-1

but then I read the cons and they made a big deal of no tuning knob. I
still really like it for the most part.

Another one I am very interested in is the C Crane C CSW
(http://www.amazon.com/Crane-CSW-Clock-Radio-Snooze/dp/B000VVJRDE/ref=tag_dpp_lp_edpp_img_in
). Because pulling in distant AM stations would be a great plus for
me, I have been thinking about this for the last few days. But, to me,
it looks like the Eton S350 Deluxe DLB AM/FM Shortwave Radio
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FA9F74/ref=pd_cp_e_1?pf_rd_p=250314601&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000Q5APCC&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0EH7B4BAG7V5N4S82VVF

or the Grundig S350
http://www.amazon.com/Grundig-S350-Deluxe-Shortwave-Radio/dp/B000Q5APCC/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1209174261&sr=8-1

Lastly, I have been looking for this as well: Kaito PLL Synthesized
Dual Conversion AM/FM Shortwave Radio (but it lacks a keypad)
http://www.amazon.com/Kaito-Synthesized-Conversion-Shortwave-KA2100/dp/B000HOJN3O/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1209174325&sr=1-9

Here are a few features I would like and I am sure I am missing some
that should be included:

1. Capable of picking up distant AM signal. Would the dual ferrite
antenna be preferable to a single inside antenna? This would be a
strong plus for me and at the same time, not pick up other signals
that might interfere with what I am listening to.
2. digital readout.
3. Keypad
4. Tuning knob
5. SSB.
6. get full SW spectrum, continuous, not in three band or whatever, or
is that just the way it comes?
7. Various adjustment knobs that lets you fine tooth the signals.
8. PLL Synthesized (to lock in stations and avoid drift. I hope that
is what it is for) ;)
9.Dual conversion (I have no idea what that is, but it sounds good ;)

Could someone who has some extra time compare the models I have listed
above and see which might be closest to meeting my needs. I would like
to still keep it portable and not be too bid of a monster.

Thanks, friends,
Haci

Maybe by this time, next year, I will be asking more interesting
questions...I hope.

Were it me I'd live without the tuning knob and get the Sony 7600Gr -
in fact I have a 7600G, have had it for something like 15 years and am
still happy with it. Good MW (AM broadcast band) performance, the
7600Gr has a variable attnuator which is good, sufficient memories and
selectable sideband - to compensate for the 1 kHz tuning it has a
clarifier adjustment for SSB. I think you would be happy with it.

I have the receivers you mention. The Sony 7600GR is an exceptional radio,
but the lack of a tuning knob, to me, does take off some of the luster, but
you can get used to the tuning method. If you buy a Grundig 350, make sure
and get the DL model. The Kaito 2100 and the C Crane are the same receivers
just tagged with different brands. If you want SSB, then you'll want the
Sony unless you look into buying the 2100 and then buying the outboard SSB
adaptor. But don't worry about asking questions. There are some folks who
are more than happy to help you pick out a good quality receiver that will
fit your needs. To me, buying shortwave radios is a lot of fun and
researching them before buying then is all a part of the experience.

You can check out this url http://www.universal-radio.com/index.html and
look at their on line catalog and get a good idea of whats out there.

Then you can check out this place
http://stores.ebay.com/RADIOS4YOU-ELECTRONIC-SPECIALTIES_SHORTWAVE-RADIOS_W0QQcolZ2QQdirZQ2d1QQfsubZ6QQftidZ2QQtZkm
Because they sell the SSB adaptor for the Kaito 2100. Hope this helps. Have
a good day.

I own all of these radios. Before I start pontificating, let's all
repeat the daily mantra:

"There is no ONE best radio"

So, when in doubt, buy all of them! ;-)

IMHO:

The best compact portable on the market is probably the Sony 7600GR.
The lack of a knob is a bummer. But the addition of a sync detector is
big. It enables you to dig very understandable signals out of the
crowded bands. Made like a tank, as was the 7600G. Seldom do you hear
of someone having a problem with one of these radios. Awesome
mediumwave reception.

Coming in close second in the compact category is the tiny Eton E5,
AKA the Grundig G5. Incredible sensitivity. Good filters enable decent
selectivity. Good audio. Built-in SSB clarification. Lot of radio in a
tiny package. The E5/G5's volume control is the major difference
between this radio and the cheaper Degen DE1103.

Almost tied for second is the Redsun RP2100, AKA the Kaito KA2100 and
the CC Radio. Don't confuse this radio with a Grundig S350. The S350
is a joke, the RP2100 is a really good radio. Better audio and
mediumwave sensitivity than the first two receivers mentioned in this
post. Doesn't have a keypad, but does have a button that let's you
move quickly between bands. Ends up in third mainly due to PAL antenna
connector and the need for an outboard SSB decoder.

Trust me - you won't go wrong buying any of those receivers. They're
all pretty impressive. Stay away from the S350 - it's single
conversion design results in all kinds of ghost images.

Mike,

My Tecsun BCL 2000 (aka Grundig S350) is far from a "joke".
It gets great MW reception, excellent SW reception, and with
my addon FM antenna I get some distant FM stations also. The
sound from the speaker is fantastic for a portable.

The only thing I don't like is the drift on MW and SW. However,
I've basically overcome that by just leaving the radio on to warm
up sufficiently... after it's warm there is virtually no drift on MW/SW.
The RF gain knob adds nothing after about halfway, but I've always
thought that was not much of a problem.

The cost at the time I got it from eBay was about $65 delivered, so
that is a big plus for me.

That said, I would love to get the Redsun / Kaito 3000 or 3001 if
they are ever produced for consumers. Everything I've heard about
the 2100 is positive and and I'd already have one if I wasn't waiting
for the next generation 3000. Has anyone heard some news? The last
I saw was that one version (the 3001?) was cancelled and the other
is on hold while Redsun devotes time to making other radios for Asian
consumers.

Thanks for your input on all the radios, and your other on-topic posts
in this group. You've helped me improve my listening skills and given
me lots of insights into what's on and available in the southeast US.

Sanjaya,

Sorry. I, too, own a Grundig S350 and I have yet to give it away. (I
did recycle my Eton E10 as a Christmas gift!) The S350 kind of reminds
me of my old Panasonic RF2200. Here's a synopsis of my major problems
with the S350/BCL2000:

1. Drift.
2. No keypad.
3. A loose tuning drive that makes it a little difficult to hit a
specific frequency very quickly.
4. Images galore! A newby showed me his list of loggings. When I saw
the frequencies listed, I knew right away he was using an S350. Half
the logs were images.
5. Overloads easily. Don't connect an external antenna.

Maybe I got a lemon, but, the radio definitely is good enough to keep:

1. Excellent MW senstivity.
2. Impressive audio, w/ dual tone control.
3. FM reception seems above average.
4. Digital read-out without some of the synthesizer noise created by
PLL circuits.

Overall, kind of a disappointment on the SW bands (which is primarily
what I use my radios for), but used often for mediumwave
bandscanning.

I'm also looking forward to some of the new Chinese portables
scheduled to hit the market soon.

Thanks for your kind words about my occasional logs.

I usually think they're pretty good reviews.

( from radio Intel review on Eton E5 )

http://www.radiointel.com/review-etone5.htm

"Since the E5 did so well against the Sony I decided to put it up
against my current favorite World Band portable radio, the Eton E1.
This clearly was not a fair comparison. After all, the E1 retails for
$500 and is simply loaded with features lacking on the E5. And not
surprisingly,

The E1 out pointed the E5 in all areas of operation except for one;
raw RF sensitivity. Yes, it's true. Tuning on AM
or SW looking for extremely faint daytime signals the E5 (and also
the Degen/Kaito 1103's) are a hair more sensitive than the E1,
primarily because a bit of synthesizer noise in the E1 limits its
ultimate noise floor.

Note: This does NOT mean you can hear more stations more clearly on
the E5 than on the E1. The E1 simply has far better performance in
other areas that in most cases more than compensates for its slightly
inferior noise floor, such as superior selectivity, overload immunity,
image rejection, its absolutely superb Synchronous Detection
Circuitry, three IF bandwidths, rock stable SSB circuitry and much
superior sound quality. On almost all signals the E1 will deliver a
more pleasing listening experience. Yet it still a matter of amazement
to me that in this one narrow area of performance, RF sensitivity, the
E5 is so superb. That is why I said earlier that, in many ways, it
sets the standard for radios in its size and price class. It also
gives me high hopes that the forth-coming top of the line Degen, the
long-awaited DE1108 will be a real "contender", but that will be
another story for another time.{"

Two that you didn't mention:

Eton E1/Grundig G1. Excellent radio.

USED Sangean ATS-803A. This is also sold as a Realistic DX-440. Another
excellent choice; a little larger than the others but you get very nice
sound for the increase in size and power.

---I agree. I have the 350 and the 350 DL and would not consider either a

great audio and some fine features. I think they are quality items in their
price range.

Well, a new S350 sells for $100 from Universal. I'm sorry if I've
insulted one of your radios (I own it, too!), but that puts it in the
approximate range of all three of the other radios. I'll stand by the
position that while there are some good reasons for me to keep my
S350, the other three radios are all much better ways to spend money
on a receiver. YMMV.

The suggestion that there are better portables, like the E1 and DX440,
is obviously correct. But most of these radios are much larger and far
more expensive. My favorites, in order, in my own collection include:

1. Eton E1
2. Sony ICF-2010
3. Grundig SAT 800
3. Sony SW 77
4. Magnavox D2935
5. Sangean ATS-803A/DX-440
6. Panasonic RF-2200
7. Radio Shack DX-390
8. Panasonic RF-2600
9. GE World Monitor
10. Panasonic B300

As I started my first post - there is no one best radio. When it comes
to reviews, everyone will have slightly different opinions. I should
not have called the S350 a joke, but I really don't feel that it's as
good a shortwave radio as the other three I suggested. Since the
original poster mentioned listening to mediumwave, it might make the
cut.

My apartment conditions aren't conducive to great reception. I'm forced to
antenna options and can rarely just use a whip antenna from any of my
portables, with the exceptions of the Grundigs and the Kaito 2100. Those 3
enable me to just extend the whip and just tune without stringing anything
or depending on a pre-amp or an active antenna. The Black 350-DL that I
bought in Radio Shack on a whim is one of the best purchases I've ever made.
It was a very well spent 100 bucks.

Well, friends, you have given me a lot to consider and I have saved
almost every link and suggestion each of you provided. Coupled with
The Passport to World Band Radio and your suggestions (including the
reviews on radiointel.com, which I really like) I will keep you posted
on my progress and I am sure I will have more questions.

Thank you just does not seem like enough for all your help. Maybe by
helping me you have helped others who may have just read these posts
and not posted. I hope so.

I have a special fondness for this group and your generosity.

- I'm stuck about the radio PAL connector to AN-LP1.
- Stacking a couple of adapters, PAL to F, F to 1/8"
- female minijack loses too much signal.

BK,

Try building your own short 6"~12" Adapter Cable with
a PAL Connector on one-end and an 1/8" Mono Plug
on the other-end.

WHY - Use the Sony AN-1 and AN-12 LW/MW/SW
Wide Range Active Antenna

BB,

Sony AN-1 Active LW/MW/SW Antenna
http://www.universal-radio.com/CATALOG/sw_ant/2206.html

The Sony AN-1 Active Antenna Coverage :
+ Longwave Frequencies = 150 to 500 kHz
+ Medium Wave {AM BCB} = 500 to 1700 kHz
+ Shortwave Bands {HF} = 1.8 to 30 MHz

IMHO - The Sony AN-12 Active Antenna would appear to be
a re-make {up-grade ?} of the Sony AN-1 Active Antenna.

My 'guess' would be an 'old' Design based on 'old' Parts
and time came to update the Design because of the lack
of old Parts to use newer Parts and -extend- the Product's
Life. So the old' AN-1 became the new AN-12

Yes - That's AN 1 & 2 {Punch} !

Potentially the 'new' Sony AN-12 Active Antenna should be
'better' then the older Sony AN-1 Active Antenna : Due to
the newer 'better' Parts and 'improved' Design.

=IF= Only someone could do a Side-by-Side between the
old' Sony AN-1 Active Antenna; and the 'new' Sony AN-12
Active Antenna : Then We Would All Know.

WHY - Use the Sony AN-1 -or- AN-12 Active Antenna ?

1 - It is Broad-Banded LW/MW/SW and does not have
to be Tuned like the Sony AN-LP1 Shortwave "Only"
Active Antenna with it's Tuning Band Steps.

2.a - It is designed to be mounted "OutSide" the House
and Up-in-the-Air for a better 'cleaner' Signal and Less
Noise then the Sony AN-LP1 Shortwave Active Antenna
that is located in-side-the-House.
+ Works well for a Limited Space OutSide Antenna.
In-the-Yard or On-the-Roof.
+ Works well as a [Hidden] "Stealth" Antenna In-the-Attic.

2.b - It can be both Located and Grounded to achieve a
better 'cleaner' Signal and Less Noise then the Sony
AN-LP1 Shortwave Active Antenna that is limited to
being located in-side-the-House.

3 - The Antenna Element can be Modified to better meet
your specific Shortwave Radio Listening (SWL) Needs.
-ps- It is a Fun Active Antenna to Experiment with . . .

MODIFYING - The Sony AN-1 -or- AN-12 Active Antenna :
I have try and used many Different Hook-Ups of the Sony
AN-1 Active Antenna over the Years. I have used the
'older' Sony AN-1 Active Antenna in many ways with good
results for a small Active E-Probe Antenna.

* Sony AN-1 Active Antenna with a Single Turn Loop
Terminated Antenna Element -or- Using a Slinky Jr
on a Hula Hoop for the Antenna Element.

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.radio.shortwave/msg/7e636b8c25a29ad4

* Sony AN-1 Active Antenna with a 104 Inch CB Whip
Antenna Element mounted on a single 21 Foot piece
of free-standing Top Rail.

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.radio.shortwave/msg/89d05099dc0d45fb

* Sony AN-1 Active Antenna with a Ten Foot (10 Ft)
Tri-Band "BroomStick" Antenna without the Top-Hat.
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.radio.shortwave/msg/248cb2f7355aa732

* Sony AN-1 Active Antenna with a Pair of Ten Foot
Triangular Loops: one loop was positioned N-S and
the other was positioned E-W.
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.radio.shortwave/msg/81103ac9571ec5a0

* Sony AN-1 Active Antenna with a Pair of Diamond
Loops made of Wire that are 24" on the Side.
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.radio.shortwave/msg/7027cd40016de600

QUESTION - Has anyone else had the Problem of the 'old'
Sony AN-1 Antennas Dying after Two Years when mounted
In-the-Attic or On-the-Roof ? -or- Is this Simply the "Normal
Life Span" of the Sony AN-1 Active Antenna ?
