Vets get in races to fight GOP

War experience touted for Dems.

Veterans for a Secure America fields candidates for Congress
nationwide, including two in Colorado.

By Jim Hughes
Denver Post Staff Writer

More than 30 Iraq and Persian Gulf War veterans have entered
congressional races across the country as Democrats, hoping to
capitalize on their military experience to topple the incumbent
Republican majority.

In Colorado, two former military men, Jay Fawcett and Bill Winter, are
vying for the House seats of two strong, entrenched Republicans:

Rep. Joel Hefley of the 5th Congressional District and Rep. Tom
Tancredo of the 6th Congressional District, respectively.

"Do we understand military and foreign affairs? You bet," Fawcett said.

"Most of us have been to the point where you get a direct dose of
military and foreign affairs, mostly in the category of small-caliber
weapons. But we understand that that is just one aspect of national
policy."

On Dec. 20, Fawcett and Winter joined 35 Democratic veterans running
for Congress at a strategy session in Washington, D.C.

The veterans voted on a name for their emerging caucuslike campaign
coalition: Veterans for a Secure America.

They also agreed that their military backgrounds should be promoted as
credentials for leadership across the full spectrum of public policy,
said Fawcett, an Air Force veteran of the 1991 Gulf War who has taught
at the Air Force Academy and now works as a consultant to Northern
Command in Colorado Springs.

The group will reconvene in Washington in February to respond to
President Bush's State of the Union address in a news conference on the
steps of the Capitol, Winter said.

An attorney and the former president of the grassroots liberal
organizing group Be The Change, Winter spent 10 peacetime years in the
Marine Corps and the Navy.

Fawcett said the group is not anti-war but is concerned about what
appears to be a lack of a solid plan for the war in Iraq.

He said the group's military experience could be crucial in providing
better leadership.

The war in Iraq, which polls show is now unpopular with most Americans,
is a growing political weakness for Bush and for Republican lawmakers,
Democratic strategists say.

As proof, they point to the experience last summer of Paul Hackett, an
Iraq war veteran who narrowly lost a congressional bid in a solidly
Republican district in Ohio.

Hackett now is running for Senate.

"Iraq is in the eye of the beholder in many ways, but increasingly, the
public is viewing it negatively," said Rick Ridder, a Democratic
consultant in Denver.

"I certainly think there is a greater momentum now among (Democratic)
veterans, after Hackett did so well in a predominantly Republican
district."

accusing the Marine of] trying to hide behind a military uniform ...

Hackett ran a very interesting campaign. If you watched
his television ads (and there were way too many ads
for the 2nd District here locally), you'd have thought he
was pro war. If you came to see him in person, you'd have
realized that his television spots were deceptive at best,
since he was definitely anti war. He also tried to portray
himself as a man of the people, but in reality he was
the richer candidate, living in one of the most exclusive
neighborhoods in the Cincinnati area.

Hackett also had the luck to run against someone
after a bitter Republican primary to succeed Rob
Portman; most of the negative ad work was already
done for Hackett by the nastiness of the primary
campaigners. Some of the implications that some
of the primary ads ran against Jean Schmidt were
the type that you'd not expect to see anymore,
like the equivalent of "she's unfit for the office
because she's a woman" or that "she disagreed with
her leadership" on certain issues. (There was way
too much mudslinging all around, really. One guy
was mad enough at losing in the primary that he started
telling people to not vote for Schmidt, even though
most of his ads were aimed at yet another candidate.)

Hackett's run for the US Senate is complicating things
for the Ohio Democratic Party, since they wanted to
give the nomination to another guy who's actually
held office before, and they view Hackett's run as
distracting to the overall campaign. The Democratic
Party was hoping that the conservatives in Ohio would
be not so thrilled with Mike Dewine and could win the
election because the conservatives would stay home,
but Hackett has become pretty much a lightning rod
and if he wins the primary, the conservatives
will have plenty of reason to show up at the polls.

DX Ace - Actually you are partially wrong.

Yes - In truth the Democrat Party of the USA does not have a plan for
a "Secure America". Although Al Gore did have his Locked Box :o)

But it is Rumored (Hey - It's just a rumor) that soon to be in 2008
US President Hillary "R2" Clinton (The "R2" because for She's Right
on Both Sides of the Issues) has a "Plan for a Secure America".
(Leaks from reliable insiders with in the HR2C Presidental Planning
Organization confirm this via their thoughts and expressions :o)

The Clinton - "Plan for a Secure America" - Entails that Any One
Who Voted for the 'other guy' will be sent to a re-education-camp
and forced to Read from Chairman Bill's Little Black Book 24&7 :o)

How about "Democrats for cutting and running?" That fits just about all
of the Democrats I have heard on the Iraq war except for Zell Miller and
Joe Lieberman.

Don't underestimate her. Never underestimate her. If there's anyone who can
bring about a full-scale communist revolution in the USA, it's her.
