How prevalent is RDS? I have a RS DX-398 with RDS, have used it very little
but so far I don't know if I have found a station broadcasting RDS. Thanks.

If you hit a station using RDS, It will display "RDS" and the stations call
letters.
Not used much in the U.S. as I understand, but quite prevalent in Europe.

My car radio is RDS equipped and here in the DC suburbs there are maybe 10
stations on which I've seen RDS messages. Just call letters or nickname,
like "98Rock" or "99.1HFS" and sometimes format info on the next "page".
The reach of a station's RDS seems to be much shorter than the radio
station's signal. Also, I have been tuned to one station (non-RDS) and had
the data from another RDS-broadcasting station whose transmitter was within
a mile show up on the display. It can get confusing sometimes if you're
listening to a news station and you happen to notice the display saying
"Religious" or "Classical".

You can't tell the difference?

Which reminds me of a story.

Last week, we were shopping for a new car. The salesman showed us a car
with the latest sound system. It had a radio that responded to voice
commands.

Say "Volume up" and the volume goes up. "Volume down," "Bass up," "Treble
down," Balance left," etc. etc., all had the desired effect.

I thought that was amazing. Then he showed me the voice-activated tuning
feature. Just say "Country" and it tunes to a country music station.
"Classical," "Talk," and so on -- it worked like magic.

We took the car for a test drive and my wife and I took turns putting the
radio through its paces. All of a sudden, another driver cut in front of
me. I slammed on the brakes and shouted: "IDIOT!!" The radio immediately
tuned to Rush Limbaugh.

Is this how RDS works?

The way stations change formats around here, you might think it's a
prediction.

In the uk rds is used by most fm stations it is used to set the time, and for
giving traffic announcements. It is also handy if you are on a long journey
and listening to a national radio station as you don't have to keep tuning
as it does it automatically.
