I know about the DX-398 and I have one. A student I work
with is wanting to buy a "inexpensive" SW radio to see
if he wants to invest in a "real" radio.
When RS closed out the DX-398, I remember they also discontinued
some other SWs. Anyone know what model numbers and their
pros and cons. This student does not need SSB/CW, so I suspect
that most of the digital SWs that RS sold until last year would
suffice.

the Grundig Porsche (G2000A) has been seen on sale, and
RS also had a funky AM/FM/TV/WX/SW 'Optimus' on sale
for a while (i have one sitting in a box in a drawer,
but only use my DX-402(s) and a Ten-Tec RX-320 right now)

i also found that the ICOM IC-R2 can easily handle a random
wire for SWL'ing and doesn't overload like the DX-402...

the tiny Grundig was found for $60, the Optimus was found
for $50, and the IC-R2 (which also scans nicely) is still
$99 at aesham.com

(p.s. i don't work for aesham, but they're good people)

Here are the model numbers and SKUs.

DX-396 is $29.97 20-226 Sangean equivalent ATS-xxx
DX-397 is $19.97 20-227 " ATS-xxx
DX-398 is $99.97 20-228 " ATS-909
DX-399 is $39.97 20-229 " ATS-606 or Siemens RK-759
DX-402 is $49.97 20-230 " ATS-505

Also, Heartland America has the Grundig 300PE for $69.99 and the 400PE
for $99.99 after a $20 rebate. The 400 is reconditioned; I don't know
about the 300.

Terry, RS also closed out the DX-399/aka Sangean 606A and the
DX-396/no known Sangean equivalent, although some on this newsgroup
suspect it is made by Sangean. Have your friend check with the local
RS stores for either of these models. The chances of finding either
model on closeout at this late date are remote, as the 399 was reduced
to roughly $40 and the 396 to $30. Both models regularly turn up on
eBay and seem to go for $50 to $60. Even at these prices, both radios
are good values. The 396 is a superb little portable. It is very
sensitive (I was chagrined to find that it hears All India Radio
nearly as well as the venerable and far more expensive Sony 2010),
runs on two C cells which provides much better than average battery
life, and has the best audio of any inexpensive portable. The 399
fine tunes down to 1 kHz (opposed to the 396's 5 kHz tuning), is
dynamite for FM reception, and is one of the handsomest digital
portables ever made IMHO. Do a Google search to find out more about
these two models. In the $50 range it would be hard to find a better
radio than either of these.

Grumpus

I stop at every RS I see. I have not seen any closeout radio since the war
started. Each RS has the same story, when the war started everyone has tried
to get any type of shortwave radio. The guy told me yesterday that they will
not get any shortwave in for a while cause their warehouse is e m p t y.
Don't know how true that is.

Most of the shortwave radios that were on closeout last summer are
gone. You could check around but dont expect to find much.

Try going to www.universal-radio.com and look in their used radio section.
Last time I looked they had a Radio Shack DX-375 for $39.00
This would make a very good starter radio. It is very similiar to the
Radio Shack DX-396. The 396 has a slightly expanded shortwave coverage
and has a digital clock. Performance and other features are similiar.

I have both the 375 and 396. They are very good radios for the price.

DX-440 - I still have one, and after a few mods (chugging, etc.) I found it
to be a pretty good radio for the price.

I've heard the same. The problem with Radio Shack is that they're pretty
much no longer a RADIO Shack. They've gone to cell-phones (which is about
all that they're motivated to push - even at their training seminars) and
other things, and have discontinued many of the things that they had - a
shame that they also discontinued most of the project kits they had, such as
those for children - I found those to be great tools for kids getting
interested in radio and electronics.
The big "RS" you see out front these days is more like for Ragtag Shack.

Grundig has recently filed for bankruptcy. Local Radio Shack told me
that when I was looking at their selection of radios and commented seems
to be a big interest in it again. He said he'd been told they would stop
carrying them shortly - perhaps to make room for all the non-radio stuff
they push?
Checked the web - stories online in various newspapers about the
bankruptcy filing - some hope that they may re-emerge if they can find
investors, but not likely. Too bad - they had some good products but
also suffered from cheaper TV's from Japan, as well as loss of
investment support.

The Grundig 'Europe' bankruptcy is not expected to have any effect on
the production or sale of the the Grundig (in name only) shortwave
receivers made in asia.

As for discontinuing radios to make room, believe it when you see it. Facts
have never prevented a RS sales person from overloading his/her "you know
what."

If they discontinue radios will they change the name
to Cell Phone Shack?
