This post sounds like a troll. If you bought them from the Shack, simply
return them. My experiences with Sangean and Radio Shack are about 180
degrees from yours.
Personally, I think the problem lies with the Quality Control at the
overseas factories. The problems with CCrane's, CCRadio are well known and
the GE SupeRadio is plagued with them as well. So, why should Radio
Shack's gear be any different? Those Chinese and Malayan plants make
product for just about everybody.

My Rat Shack radios have been more efficient and more reliable than all the
computers and cars I've bought in the last 20 years! ;-) We have a DX-390
that was purchased when the model was first introduced and it has seen
daily use with no problems. What kills radios is humidity and
condensation, cigarette smoke, and salty coastal air.

You might want to rethink your approach to whatever you see in the hobby
and find another way to vent.

I had good luck with my DX-390, except that my cat kicked it into a wall a
number of years back, eventually breaking the piece of metal which allows you
to use the adaptor. Seriously -- I had the receiver on the nighttable, and my
cat kept jumping up onto the table. One time when I tried to shoo her off, she
jumped off, using her hind paws to shove the receiver into the wall. That's
when the problems started with the contact between the adaptor and the internal
circuitry. Using batteries still worked. I didn't want to pay for the
repairs, since I'm on a tight budget, and since I also wanted a smaller
receiver anyway, I decided to buy a DX-375 when I saw it on sale for about 1/3
off. It's worked well, except that it doesn't have as many features as I'd
like. But you get what you pay for. I especially dislike the design flaw
which makes it impossible to have the antenna vertical unless you have the
panel on the back open.
At any rate, my cat died last February at the age of 19, so I don't think I'll
have any problems with the cat destroying my new receiver. :-)

Anyway, you could supply external power to your DX-390 by running
the power thru the battery compartment from an AC adaptor. I did
that many years ago with a radio that was powered by a 9-volt
battery. Still have a couple of the pos/neg snap-on thingies for
the battery that fit the pos/neg thingies in the battery
compartment. Got 'em from rat shack.
Your radio is powered by four 1.5 volt D cells in series which
comes out to 6 volts. Correct me if I'm wrong about the
batteries.
The savings from not buying batteries will pay for the AC adaptor
many times over.
Just gotta figure out how to attach the power leads...

Trolling--as in fishing with a lure.
The post from gent with all the bad Radio Shack radios smelled like a troll
because it was so illogical.
The blatantly racist posts in this NG are trolls. Tiny, short guys with
bad skin, really gross teeth and dirty beards who live under bridges are
also trolls.
I understand why he bought so many. I learned the deadly lure of Radio
Shack back in the '70s. It's such fun to go in and ACTUALLY PHYSICALLY
LOOK at obscure electronic equipment like short wave radios. So much
more enjoyable than buying by mail or internet! Thus, it's only a step
from gazing with interest to actually buying something. However, Radio
Shack has long had a reputation of selling shoddy merchandise. This is
confirmed by my experience. Of five things more substantial than little
bubble-wrapped parts I bought there over the years before I got wise,
three were wretched. One was their first digital receiver (DX-300?)
which had such a "crunchable" front end that it really was not necessary
to tune down to the AM band to hear local AM stations! The other was a
turntable that broke in six months, and they tried twice to fix, to no
avail. I think they are this way because, for millions of Americans who
don't know the electronic mail order/Internet outlets, Radio Shack has a
working monopoly on obscure electronic equipment
Since the turntable, I've made it a simple rule of my life, "Only buy
parts at Radio Shack."
Oh yeah, they're batteries are overpriced too.

I quit buying them when they stopped selling single batteries and started
selling packages only. You always wound up with a stray.
