Due to the fact that I am such a Radio Prick, and well known as an arrogant
pissant on the shortwave newsgroups, my SWL callsign application was denied.

I was advised to turn in my R8B, cease and desist from SW listening.
What am I to do?

I really don't know. I am perplexed. Maybe you can help me. I really want

Most countries of the world require a license for a receiver (so they can
collect a tax used to subsidize the government broadcast agency...like the BBC
in the UK).

And since listening to far away stations reduces the audience for LOCAL AM & FM
broadcasters, this reduces their advertising revenue (they get paid for every
thousand listeners), so they push for HIGHER fees for SW radios.

Just follow the money.

Just be thankful that you have such a fine rig(R8B), and just continue
to listen for the sake of listening. Don't get caught up in trying to
prove anything to anyone else. And if you're just a listener (as "SWL"
implies), who needs a "callsign" --- isn't that for HAM operators
using two-way tranceivers --- anyway?

If seeking some kind of status is more important to you than the
enjoyment of listening to SW, then they are correct in telling you to
get rid of your R8B. If you're just going to give it away, contact me,
I'll be more than happy to take it. ;^)

Yes, I should've turned to you for the definitive Radio prick rules and
categorization scheme.

Do you really think that keeping this little tirade of yours up is fun? You
must, given the effort you put into it.

Are you so insecure that you have to live by picking on someone simply because
they expressed that they were happy to acquire a SWL callsign? Are all these
proclamations of meaningless the way that you find meaning?

Get a life, Rog. Your's seems to have withered away!

If you are going to follow their advice, then could you
please ""turn in" you R8B to me?
I will take very good care of it.
It will occupy a position of honor
between my R2000 and my DX-398.
I will even change my Email addy to honor the R8B.
Shucks, I will even pay shipping.

Very, very few countries of the world have a radio tax. Those that still do
have them as part of a TV and Radio tax that finances the state TV and radio
stations, and nt to control listening to other stations. The tax, as in
Germany, is not on the receiver but on the home.

Not so. Shortwave listening seldom if ever shows up in radio ratings in any
nation, and is not significant at a local level.

In the US, I have reviewed hundreds of thousands of radio listening diaries
over the last 33 years, and never, ever seen a short-wave listening nentry.
So much for the competiton issue.

In the 20-some nations where I have worked in radio, I have never heard
local broadcasters worry about international shortwave competition. In fact,
I was a tropical band SW licensee at one time, so I have a bit of knowledge
of on the subject.

You are dreaming.

The nations that have had radio taxes have taxes have generally been ones
where historically private, commercial radio was not permitted, such as
Ghana, Germany, etc. None of these countries eve had higher use taxes for SW
listening that I know of; there are many countries that tax radios as a VAT,
import or similar levy. This is not a usage tax, but a hard goods tax just
like a car pays registration fees.

Where did you come up with this theory? It's a real marvel of delusion.

No, I don't really label you with that title. Actually your On-Topic posts and
your enthusiasm in the Yahoo groups makes you a valuable member of the cyber-SW
community.

In the Yahoo groups you don't make a lot of off-topic political posts. In RRS
you do your patriot-dance. While I clearly support our troops (as evidenced by
my raw anger at watching American POWs being illegally mistreated), I really
think that diplomatic efforts could've avoided the immense destruction and
suffering. I know you feel differently. We both have strong feelings on this
matter. Perhaps it would be best if we could try to keep this NG a little more
focused on SW and less directed at fighting with each other over the war.

Just a thought,
