The following addresses Bill Cheek only;

Look what the wind blew in...

Whats the matter, is business getting slow back on Fido ? Finding that
you need to diversify your ADVERTISING mediums or did you "drop by just
to keep the boys inline" ? That was an excerp taken from a FIDO message
(about 2 months ago) to a fellow who asks if you frequent the Internet !
Your typical pompus arrogant attitude...Must give you quite an ego trip
eh Bill ? Running the show...laying the law and twisting the rules to suit
your business back on FIDO. (My favorite..."Zero Tolerance" ! :)
Pretty good number you have going over there but I'm sure it will fizzle !

Are you here to push "CHEEK-4...Regurgitated Material I -The Book" ?
Don't bother answering that, things are nice and quiet with a good flow of
intelligent traffic here on this newsgroup. Plenty of veteran scanner
users and techies willing to offer their experience and knowledge for free.
No underhanded advertising or book-pushing. No "FAQ" messages whos
underlying agenda is to sucker someone into lining YOUR pocket.
Please don't spoil it by dragging your FIDO-boss attitude back here.
Go enjoy your dictatorship world with the rest of your FIDO followers and
leave well enough alone.

Huh ??? Is this self proclaimed ? Don't flatter yourself and abuse
the title. Correct me if I'm wrong but you're not a Peng., are you ?
Maybe just another one of those undocumented self taught "Scientists".
...A legend in his own mind. Get a grip !

And DON'T mislead the good people...there a certainly a few other
fully committed, experienced and knowledgeable scanner mod folks out
there (admittedly not myself).

Take your advertising elsewhere.
(The above views are expressed as my opinions.)

TECHNICAL QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
===========================================================

021: How do I restore cellular in my SnakeBite "XR-7715" ?

Forget it, pal. It ain't going to happen. The TDDRA
Act of 1994 expressly forbids the manufacture or
importation of "easily modified for cellular" scanners
after April, 1994. Manufacturers turned to putty and
removed the cellular programming from the scanners'
CPUs altogether. Sorry, it's not possible. But here
is a list of all those scanners of which I am aware
that are capable of cellular restoration:

PRO-2004 BC-855XLT *3 Regency 4030
PRO-2005 BC-200XLT Regency 1600
PRO-2006 BC-205XLT
PRO-2022 BC-760XLT *4
PRO-2026 *2 BC-700XLTA *4
PRO-2027 BC-890XLT *4
PRO-2030 BC-950XLT
PRO-2032 BC-2500XLT *3
PRO-34
PRO-37
PRO-39
PRO-43 *1
PRO-46 *2
PRO-51 *2
PRO-23 *2

Note 1: Date of Mfg code 1A4, 2A4, xA3, xA2 (label in
battery compartment), or no "A" in the serial
number.

Note 2: Date of mfg code 1A4, 2A4, -A3, -A2 (label on
back).

Note 3: Date of mfg code must not end in the letter
"D", except for OAID.

Note 4: Date of mfg code must not end in the letter
"D".

For instance, PRO-43's imported before March, 1994, are
modifiable, while some brought in during March and all
thereafter are impossible to modify. Date codes of any
-A2 or -A3 and only 1A4 and 2A4 are assured of being
modifiable. 3A4 and up probably aren't.

The above list does not include those scanners that were
naturally capable of receiving the full 800 MHz band,
without modification, some of which include:

J.I.L. SX-400 AOR-950 Icom R-7100
Regency MX-4000 AOR-1000 Icom R-1
Regency MX-5000 AOR-1500 Icom R-100
Kenwood RZ-1 AOR-2500 Icom R-9000
Uniden BC-800XLT AOR-3000 Icom R-7000
Yaesu FRG-9600 AOR-8000

Some of these radios, if still current, had the cellular
removed by the factory after April, 1994.

==============================================================
021a: Are any mods available for my "SnakeBite XR-7715"?

Shooooey, dude, you have the wrong impression about
scanner modifications and hacking. Mods are not
"available" in the sense that they can be found on a
store shelf, or laying on the top of someone's mind
who can tell you in so many words or less how to turn
that "Snakebite" scanner into a fire-breathing, rip-
snorting behemoth of a Turbowhopper. All scanners can
be modified for something; generally a dozen or more
things. But only a few scanners have anything written
about them in detail. And you have to know where to
LOOK. You can't just up and ask for them. It takes
me several days to several weeks and sometimes MONTHS
to work up and write about a hotshot mod for a decent
scanner, and after THAT level of effort, it's not
possible to make it "available" off the tip of my
fingertips. Continue reading below. There are
answers to your question........

==============================================================
022: Where can I find mods for my SnakeBite XR-7715?

You can't. There are only a handful of scanners ever
made that were worth solitary, focused research and
development, specifically for that scanner. Those
scanners include the following:

PRO-2004 PRO-2005 PRO-2006 PRO-2035 PRO-2042
PRO-2022 PRO-43 PRO-34 PRO-37 BC-200XLT
PRO-26 PRO-39 BC-3000

You may find occasional articles, files, and "mods"
expressly for other scanners not mentioned above, but
they are the exception to the rule. Start by looking
through the file section on my BBS (619) 578-9247, and
peruse quicklinks to other sites from my WWW HomePage:

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/bcheek

My BBS has hundreds of files on a wide array of radios
and you are welcome to peruse the list. My homepage

has quicklinks to hundreds of other sites that may contain

a file or two on your "Snakebite" scanner.

Now here is the problem: I am one of the few, if not

the ONLY engineer fully committed to scanner mods.

Yet, there are over 500 scanners on the historical list
now. It is physically impossible for me to dedicate
attention to any but a few, and I have to choose those
owned by the greatest numbers of people who will
support my efforts and enable me to pay the rent; put
food on the table; and educate the kids. That small
list of scanners above reaches out to tens or hundreds of
thousands of owners. There is no time left for me to work
on "SnakeBite" scanners that have very little to offer, even
after hours of hard work! But take cheer and read on.......

==============================================================
023: So you mean there are no mods for my "SnakeBite"?

More or less I mean that, yes. But, that's not to say
it can't be modified. It can! It's just that there is
nothing published for it; nothing in the way of step-by
step instructions with graphics, photos, and details.

No one would go to the time and trouble, you see?

An engineer who is capable of designing super-hacks
for that "SnakeBite" scanner is not going to own one!
Instead, he will own one from the above list, one that
is eminently capable of some very powerful modifications
in the first place.

Now I said your "SnakeBite" can be hacked. It can.

But you are more or less on your own in the sense that
I cannot direct you to a "shopping list" of mods from
which you can pick and choose. There is no such list.
Any hope for you is to figure out what you want to do,
and ask me a specific question. I can tell you a few
answers in advance:

No.

No, your "SnakeBite" is not capable of cellular; extra
memory; additional bands of frequencies; and things of
that nature that pretty much require factory design in
the first place. (See ahead for Memory Modifications)

Yes.

Yes, your "SnakeBite" is probably capable of a few analog
modifications along these lines:

1. Tape Recorder Jack
2. Automatic Tape Recorder Switch (beats VOX!)
3. Extended Delay
4. Tone Decoder-Rejector Countermeasure
5. CTCSS mod
6. S-Meter
7. Scanner-to-Shortwave Interface
8. Carrier-On-Indicator
9. Audio Improvements
10. Beep volume or disable
11. Squelch Improvements
12. Remote Controller
13. Baseband audio outputs
14. Event Counter
15. Shielding of plastic cases
16. External DC power
17. Improved Adjacent Channel Rejection
18. Speed up of SCAN & SEARCH modes

Then, maybe...depending....on the scanner.... the following
digital and/or esoteric enhancements.........???

19. Interfacing to a computer
20. Subsidiary Carrier (SCA)
21. Extended Memory to 25,600-channels & up
22. Cellular restoration
23. 54-88 MHz restoration
24. Data/Tone/Noise Rejector

==============================================================
024: So how can I do some of these mods?

That's a problem. No one has written them up for your
"SnakeBite". About the only way I can think of is to
get one or more of my three books and a subscription to
the WORLD SCANNER REPORT. Research and study up on the
mods we've developed for other scanners, and then
compare the procedures for that specific scanner to
your "Snakebite". Often, when I write up a mod, I give
hints on how to apply it to other scanners.

Also, if you ask me specific questions, I can often
give specific answers. If you ask me "how to do a
memory mod", I'll just refer you to something already
in print or published somewhere. If you are doing a
memory mod and run into trouble, then I will help you
with that trouble.

==============================================================
025: Memory mods? How can I increase the programmable channels?

That depends on what kind of memory storage system is
used by your scanner. There are three kinds:

1. On-board CPU RAM (Random Access Memory)
2. Static Random Access Memory (SRAM)
3. EEPROM Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory.

The first kind is most prevalent and there is no way to
expand that kind of memory. It is, however, usually
limited to scanners with 51 channels or less of programmable
memory. 100-channels and up are usually done by methods 2 or 3.
So your first step is to determine what kind of memory is used
by your scanner.

EEPROM memory is expandable, but very difficult under
most circumstances. SRAM is the easiest and offers the
largest expansion capabilities. For example, the
PRO-2004, PRO-2005, and PRO-2006 can be expanded to
25,600 programmable channels (and more)! The PRO-32,
PRO-34, PRO-37, PRO-39 & PRO-2022 can go to 12,800-channels
and beyond. The BC-760XLT, BC-560XLT, and a few others
can be taken to 6,400 channels and more. The PRO-2035
and PRO-2042 can go to 16,000 channels and up.

My Extended Memory Modifications are amply documented
in excruciating detail in my books and in the WORLD
SCANNER REPORT, complete with diagrams, photos, and
many pages of instructions such that most casual
hobbyists who know a soldering iron from a tire iron
can do the work. This kind of mod is not suited to
being given out in an e-mail message in so many words
or less, so you will need to acquire the instructions
before doing the work.

==============================================================
026: How do I tell a SRAM chip from an EEPROM from CPU RAM?

If you can't do this on your own or after the below
explanation, you are probably not a candidate for such
a wild adventure at this stage of your hacking career.

Most CPUs hold a small amount of RAM (random-access-
memory), sufficient to store anywhere from 10 to 50, maybe
a hundred channels or so. This is the case for most
scanners, so there is no way to increase that memory.
Fortunately, there are two other methods of RAM used by
a few scanners that offer possibilities for expansion.

EEPROM: The least common and least expansive is EEPROM
(electrically erasable programmable read-only-memory).
The PRO-43, BC-2500XLT, BC-200XLT, BC-100XLT and BC-3000XLT
use EEPROM programmable memory. It is possible to expand
EEPROM-type of memory, though not by such huge
proportions as the SRAM type. EEPROMs are usually tiny
little chips with 8-pins.

SRAM: A handful of scanners use a separate SRAM
(static random-access-memory) chip for storage of
frequencies and custom channel settings. It is this
type of memory that can be easily and economically
expanded by factors of 2, 4, 8, 16 and even 64 times
the original volume! Scanners known to employ SRAM
memory include the following:

PRO-2004 PRO-2021 PRO-32 BC-760XLT
PRO-2005 PRO-2022 PRO-34 BC-950XLT
PRO-2006 PRO-2032 PRO-37 BC-590XLT
PRO-2035 PRO-2042 PRO-39 BC-600XLT

There may well be other scanners that use SRAM memory,
but either I forgot about them or don't know. If
you're curious about your scanner's potential for
memory expansion, you can just about forget it for
those with fewer than 100-channels. The CPU's RAM
easily handles 10 to 100 channels or so. If your
scanner is not on the above list, but has 100 or more
channels, then look over its schematic diagram and
parts list or scrutinize its Logic/CPU Board for any of
the following types of SRAM chips:

uPD446G-15 TC-5517CF-20 LC-3517BM-15
CXK5864BP MB-8416-20LPF

or something similar, disregarding the last few digits
and letters. A SRAM chip is generally characterized by
a rectangular shape with 24 or more pins, each of the
longest sides holding half the pins. An SRAM chip in a
schematic diagram will be characterized by eighteen or
more of its pins going straight to the CPU chip. Any
chip with less than 24-pins is not likely to be an
SRAM; neither is any chip in a square format. SRAMs
are rectangular with 24 to 32 pins. Pinout notation of
SRAM chips will include mystic codes such as:

A0, A1...A9, R/W, CE, I01, I02...I08, OE, etc.

==============================================================
027: My "SnakeBite" scanner has an SRAM; how to do the mod?

Get the published instructions for Extended Memory Mods
using larger SRAM chips. Start by reviewing the Table
of Contents and Index to the World Scanner Report where
you will find articles on memory mods. Get at least
one of my books to supplement the WORLD SCANNER REPORT.
The ULTIMATE SCANNER book is probably the best choice.

The Table of Contents and Index to the World Scanner
Report can be found on my HomePage and FTP sites as
well as on my BBS. They're also contained in my
product information file: PRODINFO.ZIP that I can send
by e-mail upon request.

Since all SRAM chips are much alike, my instructions
for one scanner will apply to all, and not be that
difficult to follow, provided you can find your SRAM
chip in the first place.

==============================================================
028: Do you do scanner modifications like memory mods?

Sure. Contact me privately and we can go from there.

==============================================================
029: I'm not interested in all your mods - just one. Will
you photocopy the information for me?

Sorry, no. My publishers own the copyright to my books
and my company owns the copyrights to material published in
the World Scanner Report. It would be unethical, illegal,
or both, for me to do that.

If your budget is tight, you can in many cases get
basic information for free from my BBS or from me via
e-mail and the hard core stuff for $5/up by purchasing
specific copies of the World Scanner Report. It is not
always necessary to buy my books in order to do the
mods. On the other hand, my published mods are NOT the
sort you find on most BBS's and Internet sites with a
few sentences or paragraphs and maybe an ASCII drawing
if you're lucky.

My mods are detailed; well documented; and have
excellent graphics, including schematic diagrams,
photos, and illustrations. This kind of work does not
come for free and I make no bones about it. On the
other hand, there is no charge if all you want is how
to do simple mods like the cellular mod to the PRO-2006.

==============================================================
030: So how do I restore cellular in the PRO-2006?

1. Remove the top cover of the scanner.
2. Look down inside the front panel behind the #3 key
of the keyboard, and clip the exposed leads of the
two coppery colored diodes standing on end. One
restores cellular and the other gives a FREE 25%
speedup of the SCAN function.
3. Replace top cover.

See, that's the kind of stuff I can provide for free.
And I am happy to do so. I do not work for free for
days on end, paying out of my pocket the high costs of
photography, graphic arts, and computer operations with
sweat dripping off my brow..... There is a difference.

If you don't believe it, then grab a few free files off
my BBS and others, and some from the Internet.........
and then invest five bucks in a copy of the World
Scanner Report or one of my books.... See for yourself.

==============================================================
031: How can I improve my reception capabilities?

Easy - maybe. Just increase the height of your antenna.
Each 10-ft increment of added height can yield an
apparent "gain" of 3-dB. For scanner signals, 3-dB of
difference can be all the difference between excellent
reception and none at all! There is no substitute for
height of the antenna when trying to receive signals
outside your immediate geographical area of more than
a few miles. VHF and UHF signals weaken dramatically
as they travel along the surface of the earth (ground-
wave); much more so than the spacewave that travels
a couple of wavelengths and more above the earth's
surface. Low antenna heights intercept the spacewave
of only very close transmitters, and the groundwave of
all others. Yes, the quality and type of antenna makes
a difference to a station's reception capabilities, but
the single most important factor is the height of the
antenna, regardless of its quality and type.

==============================================================
032: How can I install the military aero band in my scanner?

You can't, and that's that. If your scanner came with the
military aero band (220-400 MHz), then you're Fat City.
If it did not come with it, there is no way under the sun
of "restoring" it. You can't restore what ain't there.

==============================================================
033: How can I modify my scanner to follow trunked systems?

You can't, and that's that. For one, it would be illegal
to do that according to the ECPA of 1986, but two, the
data formats and software of trunked radio systems are
proprietary and copyrighted by the manufacturer or
vendor and this information is not available to the
public, nor even to technical shops. Each trunked
system is as different as night and day with respect to
all other trunked systems, even from the same vendor. It
is possible for the astute hobbyist to gain some skill and
fortitude in following trunked system conversations. These
techniques are scattered around in various written works,
from books, magazine articles, and prefaces in frequency
directories...to text files on various BBS's and Internet
archives. These techniques, hints, tips, and kinks cannot
be recited here in so many words or less. One good starting
point might be the preface material in any recent edition
of Radio Shack's POLICE CALL books. But in a word, you
cannot alter your scanner to follow trunked signals.

==============================================================
034: My PRO-2004 has problems, first mild and now severe. It
has been repaired several times. Can you fix it?

There is a distinct possibility this PRO-2004 has problems
with defective solder joints. Back in 1986, there was a
production run of the PRO-2004 manufactured with a defective
wave soldering machine. At first, it was only marginally
defective, but it worsened and degraded with time.

The result, by the time the malfunctioning machine was
discovered, was that many defective PRO-2004's had been shipped
to market. Some immediately failed within the warranty period
and were repaired or replaced. Others didn't fail until after
the warranty expired, and were either repaired or junked. Some
didn't fail for years.........

Failures appear to come in waves.....periodic rashes. Defective
solder joints are a serious problem, because the radio can be
fixed only to the extent that it is broken. Repaired solder
joints today have no bearing or relationship to those headed for
failure in a week, a month, or a year. There is no economical
way to repair them all in one fell swoop. A PRO-2004 with
defective solder joints is very likely to develop more problems
with the passing of time. There can be no guarantees against
subsequent related or unrelated failures.

With that in mind, yes I do such repairs, but I cannot guarantee
that other failures won't occur. Costs of repair can be high,
and I would estimate the first repair tag to be $100 plus return
shipping. I know, it's a bum deal, but I can't do any better than
that except to offer to buy the unit for my repair parts bin.

I pay $25 plus shipping for defective PRO-2004's in reasonably
clean condition. (No basket cases....) You might consider this
as an alternative to continued repair bills.

==============================================================
035: Can my scanner be interfaced to a computer for remote and
automated control, as well as for programming of the memory
channels by the computer? Can the interface acquire data from
the scanner and send it to the computer?

In a word, yes. Most scanners "can" be interfaced to a computer
for one-way control and automated programming of the memory
channels. It is probably not worth the effort and cost for most
scanners, but it can be done. These scanners include:

PRO-2004 PRO-2005 PRO-2006 PRO-2035 PRO-2042 PRO-2022
PRO-34 PRO-37 PRO-39 PRO-43 PRO-26

Probably quite a few others are possible, but.......???

There are three scanners that are capable not only of the one-
way mode of remote control and automated programming, but also of
a "data acquisition" mode where the scanner sends its display
(channel, frequency, bank, mode, delay, lockout) and other data
to the computer for automated logging and data processing. These
scanners are the PRO-2004, PRO-2005, and PRO-2006.

Several companies make scanner/computer interfaces, including:
Optoelectronics - Datametrics - COMMtronics Engineering

Each interface has its own unique characteristics, advantages,
and limitations, but all are "good" in the sense of freeing the
operator from much of the labor and drudgery of scanning. The
Optoelectronics and Datametrics interfaces are generally limited
to the PRO-2005/5 and PRO-2035/2042.

A "roll your own" computer interface was published in the
World Scanner Report, V2N1-V2N6. Another more powerful one was
published in my 3rd book, THE ULTIMATE SCANNER (Cheek3)

==============================================================

That's it for now. I will keep this FAQ updated. If you see things
that need to be added to it, by all means, let me know. If this FAQ
fails to address your question(s), then hit me with 'em again, but be
specific. And be detailed with symptoms and observations if you need
tech support on mods or troubleshooting and diagnosis. Use e-mail if
you can.

Do any of your books cover mods to ham radio gear?

I want to extend the receive capabilities of my Kenwood TM-731 to 480
MHz. It will display 400 to 500 MHz, but only actually receive up to
about 464 MHz.

Keep up the great work!

Pull out whatever little thing you can get your hands on. Jerk it all
you want. You're playing games, Duffster.

>Like I said, self proclaimed ! Another "Scientist"...
>(I just love it when someone tells me they're a "Scientist" :)

Aren't we all? We should be........ I even do a little rocket
science once in a while, dear Duffster. Deep stuff. Make no bones
about it, I do what I want to do.....and most of the time, it has
something to do with overcoming massive obstacles of either substance
or mind.....or both. Whatever label YOU want to push to put on it is
only an example of your continued sniveling and straying from the
topical flow of this forum.

Labels and titles, Mister Duffster, are for those who don't know what
the hell they are supposed to be doing. But let's put it in another
light.....the last five REAL JOBs I had were with the following
titles:

Project Manager (1978-79) Radio telemetry of meteorological & air
pollution data

Telecommunications Engineer (1980) Designer of land microwave and
VHF-UHF SCADA systems

VHF-UHF Engineering Supervisor (1981-82) Same as above, except
lead engineer

Program Manager (1982-84) Satellite & space communications

President/CEO (1988) of a communications manufacturing corporation

Since then, I have achieved a measure of freedom that goes far beyond
title and label. Now I guess you could say that I am CEO of the
world's smallest company. (But I am master of the largest!)

>No, I although my occupation is in the world of design engineering I
>wouldn't attempt to fool myself or others by claiming to be an Engineer.

THAT is only because you are NOT one, then. A man is only what he is.
What others call him makes utterly no difference in the great scheme
of things..... except if he's called LATE TO DINNER. That is ungood.

You seem to have a lot of time to be deeply concerned about WHO and
WHAT I am. Why? Clearly, you perceive yourself as little more than a
toilet scrubber, and perhaps by attacking me, you can elevate yourself
a little? Or perhaps I am an evil entity, and by eradicating me, your
name will go down in history as Savior of The World?

Attack away, sweets! But you might first want to study and bone up a
little on my great, great, step-grandfather-in-law's bastard cousin's
dad, Admiral David Farragut. He rubbed off on me a little. Find out
what he said as his fleet entered Mobile Bay......... I have other
preferred 4-letter words over the innocuous "Damn...."

And I don't do it for my health, either. I got publishers yanking on

Petey J. PoopBreath got the urge to have a go at me.

The REAL funny thing is that I kicked ol' Duffster's ass off the
FidoNet SCANRADIO forum about six months ago for acting like an
asshole. So he frogs onto this public anarchist forum to drop his
britches, pee and poop all over the place so the world know just what
happened to him and what a jerk I am for having the audacity to give
'im the boot. Hell, I kicked his ass so hard, me and HIM had to go to
the hospital on three legs to get my foot surgically removed from his
grumpstump. He's still a little "sore"....if you know what I mean.
<wink - wink - nudge - nudge>

Now little ol' Petey Poop.....I don't know what his problem is, other
than I see him over on the shrink newsgroups all the time trying to
score hits of Depo-Provera and other things to settle his nerves. Way
back a year ago, some other snotball was on this group day in and day
out blowing and going on about me....so I popped in to have a visit
with 'im, and that's when ol' Petey Patootey jumped on the bandwagon.
I think he and the snotball had 'em something going..... At one time,
they were writing in another group about going shopping for furniture
together. One liked Danish Modern and the other'n liked Colonial.....

That's about it up to the minute. More news at 11. Petey-boy will be
wanting to get on the pot next. Then Duffster will want his turn.
They both just LOVE to sit after me.

NO games played here Willy...YOU are the one doing the dance.

I don't care to hear that you have X number of years in Engineering

By the way, if you're so qualified and competent why did you have

Tell that to the good folk who invest countless years in education
to qualify them to use labels and titles.
I do design Engineering but admittedly don't have a University degree

Ask yourself why I am so mad with you (and I'm NOT the only one

The above was made in humour of Billy's comment to me that he
would consider "letting me back on FIDO" if I appologized. :)
I don't really miss it...'tis nothing now other than an
advertising/support medium for his books and scanner interface.

Do you know what SATIRE is Billy ? Remember when you told me...

(I replied..."not likely !!!") Ya...I'm "dead meat" alright..haha !

Was it hitting you in the funnybone (or pocketbook) with some technical
questions that you couldn't answer that humiliated you into a rage of

You ought to come back and check it out now. I got rid of all the
lids, twits, nitwits, nincompoops, and sickos. SCANRADIO has become a
free forum where everyone is free to talk scanners and scanning. Not
a bad place anymore.

Well, yeah, but that was due to the likes of ol' Hewbie Duffster and
cronies who had the idea of sinking the whole forum. Once they got
the boot, things settled down and the forum has become civil and
friendly, not to mention educational and informational.

Just remember one thing..... "shit happens", but it is always dropped
by someone FIRST. Hugh Duff dropped it FIRST here about a week ago.
Just check the threads and the date/time headers if you don't believe.
He started his share of it on the SCANRADIO forum, too. And got sent

No, that one is just an NFM chip used in various scanners for which I
either don't remember what or never knew.

>I've seen this question asked many times on this forum, but

Well, AOR is utterly terrible when it comes to technical
documentation, and I haven't seen a schematic on the AR-8000 to be
able to tell for sure. I'm not sure one even exists. I've asked a
number of people for a copy, but no one knows if and where a Service
Manual is available. That's what I'd need.

If you have a service manual on the AR-8000, I'd be glad to copy it
and return the original. And then I could tell a helluva lot more.

>Wussamatter...is the FIDO market saturated ?

No market is saturated. I went on a cost-cutting mission, and
acquired parts and materials at much better prices than were ever
before available to me. In turn, I was able to shave the price by a
substantial margin. People have a right to know about things like
that. Ok, so you're not interested. That's cool.

But, I'm not a multi-million dollar company like Optoelectronics who
can afford full page ads in all the rags from here to Timbuktu. And
then "hire" shills to frog onto forums like this one, touting their
stuff as if they were regular hobbyists. Me....I was up front with it
all the way, Mr. Duff. No shills. No hype and hyperbole.

But we feel the CE-232 is a very competitive product, and that it does
things others can't touch. Fer instance, the CE-232 can AutoProgram
the scanner with as many frequencies as it will hold, hands off, nice
and automated with no errors..... The CE-232 can also operate
remotely from the scanner, and even be disconnected from it.....

AND PLUGGED INTO ANOTHER SCANNER while the first one is being used for
something else. If you have two scanners and want the Optoelectronic
interface, then you have to buy TWO of the Opto units...... not so
with the CE-232. Just one itty bitty CE-232 can serve any number of
supported scanners.

Because of the drastic price reduction and the fact that the CE-232 is
not widely publicized by the press, I thought it quite appropriate to
make a Press Release about it. Sorry if you disagree...... 'Sniff.

And here is another matter for you to gnaw on....... I don't have
mega-dollars to spend on advertising, so I can't get any of the major
magazines to review the CE-232. (You have to spend the money first to
get a decent review.) Sooooooo, what are the alternatives?

One alternative was to issue a Press Release in this forum. I spent
considerable time making it tasteful and 99.5% informative.

Try reading it again and tell me EXACTLY where you take issue with it.
I'm open to justifiable criticism.....I'll make it better. Just tell
me EXACTLY where, ok?

There is no YES or NO, up to this point. You're playing games, Hubie,

before I give you the YES or NO for which you're fishing. You asked a
stupid question with obvious traps built into it. Sooooo, rephrase

times, direct and in general to the public, that about all I know of
programming is that it comes on radio and TV. And I don't watch much
TV or listen to broadcast radio.

Firmware is software, Hubie, and I don't wear a propeller on my ball

issues lapse. So I hire help when I need it. Now please write that

REWRITE the books on scanner hacking and REALLY show me how it is.

Pity that all you're really capable of is....potshooting and
backstabbing from behind cover.

C'mon, HubeyBaby, load up your lugnuts in a wheelbarrow and belly up

The good News: YES it is :-)

The bad News: Oh NO is is not! :-(

It depends on what you want to do with it. If it is to get hold of a
fixed level audio, then YES IT IS.

If uoy want ABSOLUTE RAW (straigt from the pin) audio then the problen
is that there are several demodulators (all two of them) , so the
answer is NO it isn't BUT read on macduff....

I have the service manual for the 8000.

There are different demodulators for the different modes.

The nbfm is is out of U1 - TK10485M
the AM/WBFM is out of U3 - TA7792
Sideband osc/buf Q9/Q10

The following description is MY interpretation of the block diagram.
(I do not have time to take a detailed look and analyse the circuit
diagram). The words below are MINE not AOR's Therefore the following
must be seen as NON OFFICIAL. AND at YOUR risk.

The various discriminator/demodulators/detectors have pre processing
(conditioning) before all meeting at the mode selector switch U6.
(Cmos bi-switch 4066)

The raw NBFMsignal gets filtered and goes through a buffer amp Q6
(fixed gain) before hitting the input of mode switch U6.

The raw AM/WBFM does not get conditioned before hitting the input of
the mode switch.

The output from the mode switch goes through amp U5B [uPC358 ] (as a
buffer? or line amp? - it matters, but be aware that there is a fixed
gain amp here)

The output from this amp splits into two directions. One direction
takes the fixed level audio to the normal audio amplifier, via the
audio gainpot etc. (Volume control).

The other direction feeds the FCC connector on the back of the radio
via C9, a 0.1 mfd blocking capacitor.

I DO NOT recommend any one messing in the back of the radio UNLESS you
have experience in micro (size, not processor) electronics and are
familiar with Cmos handling techniques - the tracks are tiny and so
are the components - they are sensitive to body static electricity -
especially on hot dry days when body static cab be as high as 100,000
volts (and the poor old AR8000 takes 5v! - BE CAUTIONED!

(It makes yer eyes water thinking about it!)

I CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR BLOWN UP RADIOS.
NO MATTER HOW SO CAUSED!!!!

The fixed level audio out of the mode switch BEFORE it get to the
blocking 0.1mfd blocking capacitor can be found on pin 3 of connector
J2 inside the radio.

The same audio (after the blocking capacitor) is on pin 6 of J3 (The
FCC connector on the back of the radio.

(Looking at the back of the radio, pin 6 is is the second one in from
the left.)

CAUTION - the radio supply voltage (c5v) and ground are also on this
connector so be carefull you don't short them whilst pocking about!
=================================================
The audio is not available in a similar manner on the 2700.

Hope that gives the answer to the question.....

So what's the deal with this CE-232, anyway? It sounds like about six
bucks worth of parts soldered together and sold for a couple of
hundred. Is the CPU that expensive, Bill? BTW, if you send a copy of
the product to just about any magazine, they will revue it. At least
if the product is of any worth at all...

Also, your scanner FAQ was little more than blatant advertising. I am
not going to promote your business by discussing exactly what parts,
either, so don't even ask.

Please take your little flame wars to e-mail, Bill. This is not the
place for it.

Sad but true. He schrewed up a nice Fidonet echo, I wonder what's next,

hahahhahahahahahahahaha, shit Bill you kicked EVERYONE off who you saw as
any kind of a threat to you or wouldn't kiss your ass. You would carry on

you would tell them if they want to respond to do so via netmail & when
they did that you would tell the sysop they were harassing you. Get the

The CE-232 is a LOT of parts to be soldered together, and yes, the CPU is
expensive, but it isn't the majority of the cost involved.
I have the CE-232 and it runs several (3) scanners...one at a time as
described in his techical information. The interface is very powerful and
agile. It will do many things the OPTO versions won't, just as the OPTO
versions do much the CE-232 won't do. It just depends on your
wants/needs. I suggest the OPTO for those that have very little hacking
experience...the CE-232 for those that like to dive in and get personal
with their equipment. (I have a friend that has the OPTO 456, so I am
familiar with it.)

As for the arguments on rec.radio.scanner, I agree. Few people enjoy the
rocks these people throw at each other.

Ok, great! But the list needs one more thing....the circuit symbol as

Yes. As is the socket, the RS-232 chip, the handful of other chips,
not to mention the electrolytic capacitors and the printed circuit
board. Then there is the 100-page Manual. There are a good dozen
other costs to add in, but the picture is not as you liberally paint
it.

THAT is patently untrue. Much depends on if you advertise with them.

Gosh, that WOULD be nice. Like, it would have been nice for you to
e-mail me instead of posting in public. But you chose the public
forum, so that is where my reply is. THAT is ALWAYS the case. As
soon as Misters Duff, Boe, Alexander, et al, wish to take it to

They fired the opening shots, fella, so it's up to THEM as to where

When they come out shooting, then they get shot back at, equal or

Don't ever make threats. This crap started long ago. Now a few assholes start the mud slinging.

Let's take a look at past events.

1.) a reader posted a question about computer scanning.
2.) a few other readers responded.
3.) Bill posted a technical artical about the CE-232, yes there was some information about where to get
information, nothing wrong with plugging a product. This is America, not Russia.
4.) Out of the woodwork come PjB, Hugh, and now some asshole threating me to back off. None of these
people with the exception of attempt to make any attempt at providing any input to the newsgroup
but to flame Bill Cheek and to go as far as to flame any person who corresponds or disagrees
with their view.
5.) Now I have threats placed against me. I do not take them lightly and steps have been taken to stop
John. There are protections in place for people who do this. I have been through this before
and when I or my family is threated I will take action.

John you are totally wrong. At the time the war started, Bill was not the moderator. Ken Storm I think
was the Moderator. But, he vanished. Then Andy Moss came on the scene and all hell broke out. I can't
ever remember seeing you on the echos at the time. So you must be getting your missinformation from

Joseph - USE MARGINS OR LINE ENDS!!!!

I am sorry if you don't remember me being on the Scanradio echo. I kept a low key
profile most of the time. I don't remember you either. You are partially correct.
Ken Storm was the Moderator, then he left the echo with out a word or any trace of
what happened to him (he did the same to the CB echo which led to me becoming
asst moderator). I was there & saw it all. When the dust settled from Ken
leaving, Bill Cheeks became the moderator. For a while he was kicking out
a person about every other day. I was one of them. Obviously I must not have
been much of a bad guy or you would remember me. Bill kicked out anyone who was
a threat or didn't kiss his ass like he thought it should be. Perhaps you should
go back to where you belong (kissing Bill's ass or sucking him off) untill you
get your facts straight.

> I would like to know where this notion of 'Bill's buddies' kept the echo alive. Wake up and smell the

Really? Then how the hell did Roger Cravens end up back on the echo?? THere were
other "Bill's Butt Buddies" too, like Blake & others. You better go. I think
the lack of oxygen from having your nose Bill's ass has schrewed up your
thoughts & memories.

We can't all be wrong & you & "Bill's Butt Buddies" are right.

No democracy on ScanRadio... The podium was closed for business
when you decided the topic of discussion was going to affect YOUR
wallet. It WAS on topic and had everything to do with bending
and breaking of the FIDO rules to suit you after you took over.

Anyhow, it is quite evident that the ONLY flames be it here or

The common denominator is YOU !

Well, I have several of Cheek's books about scanner mods, and I find them
informative and interesting. Granted, he can be a little crass and
bombastic, but no one else has come close to his work in the Scanner Mod
segment of the hobby.

I try to avoid these flame wars that seem to erupt whenever Cheek, Moss, or
some others post anything. I wasn't around during the Fido Wars, but
read more than I wanted to know about them. I just wish these guys would
knock off the flames. I don't know or care who started them, or who said
what to whom, I just want to read about scanners, radios and frequencies.

Actually, there were rarely any flame wars or problems untill Bill Cheek
became the moderator. THEN, the problems started. Gee, Bill, maybe your
memory is bad. If you want I could e-mail you the messages I saved of
people telling you to STOP trying fix problems that weren't on there on
the echo. Face it Bill, you were just trying to get rid of ANYONE who
didn't think or act EXACTLY like you because you saw them as a threat. Do
you remember how many people asked you to put the moderatorship up to
a vote??? You refused, due to the policies of Fidonet, you were able to.

No Bill, the forum nearly sank because there was such little traffic on
it AFTER you became moderator that if you hadn't called in your little
buddies to help out & create traffic that it would have gotten kicked off
the backbone.

I STILL don't see anywhere near the amount of traffic on that echo that there
used to be before Butt Cheeks became the moderator.

Why can't you stop Lying Bill?

I suppose now you are going to complain to my sysop again. That shows how little
of a man you are.

Its true. Bill Cheek is a shameless liar. I have ample proof. He once
thought I was sending him sexually oriented email from an AOL account. He
tried to tell everyone that AOL actually informed him the name and address
of one of their customers!! Can you believe it?
I've still got the letter if anyone wants to see it.

You need to care about HOW things get started, if not by whom.
Mainly, if something doesn't get started, then it doesn't exist.
Things like this are like fires. They'll burn themselves out after a
while, once the fuel is gone. But more often than not, it's better to
respond and put out the fire.

I wonder how long you'd sit for it, if a troupe of snotballs waltzed
in on you. It's pretty easy to render all kinds of judgments sitting
out in the bleachers.

Pretty much right up front and on the table, though, is the BIG
question of WHY there aren't more authors, engineers, technicians,
publishers, and business people participating in these forums? Ever
wonder about that?

The answer is universal. I've seen it happen in many places with many
different prominent people......they come into a public forum, and a
troupe of sickos jumps all over them. It doesn't take long before the
good guys are gone......leaving the mess to the snotballs.

I'm a little different. I was born in the kitchen and can stand the
heat as well as serve some up. But the brass tacks facts are simple.
Hugh Duff, John Mackey, Michael Alexander, and Peter J. Boe started
this round and won't give it a rest. It's real simple. They want me
gone. I threaten their security, I guess.

It ain't a matter of ignoring them. They won't stop.

Before you wrap it all up into a shut and closed case from up there in
the bleachers, step out onto the playing field and get a different
perspective. Analyze the facts. There are several very important
ones. Duff and Mackey got booted from a moderated forum and have an
axe to grind. But do they have anything to contribute? Never.

Boe is a schizo-freakazoid-weenie who jumped on the wrong side from
the git-go. Alexander ain't much better, but he has his own irons in
the fire that he may feel I threaten. Check the threads and see for
yourself......though its mostly Duff and Mackey who are fanning the
flames for this go-around. Boe seems to have stuffed a sock in it,
and Alexander may be thinking things over after failing to practice
his preachments. But Duff and Mackey.....now those two popinjays are
on a mission. Duff even admitted it.

So now what? Should I let them run me off? At least step out onto
the playing field before deciding.

Its just as well. A while back I was getting truly threatening email from
Cheek. He would tell me to watch my back because interesting things would

Let's see, Bill Cheek post's a FAQ. That gives PjB, Hugh, and now John a
right to take shot, flame and all out lie. Plus anybody who has received any good info from
him and makes a statement in that effect is called a cronie, butt buddie, culprit and various
other words that John, PjB,a nd Hugh have proclamed. And yes PjB has said many things to me.

So, Yes Bill posted a FAQ, like it has been said. All was quite until Bill posted his
FAQ. Then the bugs crawled out of the woodwork.

WHO STARTED THIS. Not Bill!

I do not like being threated and I take it seriously. John has made threats and actions are being

Geez, that's really deep. Man where do you get this vision thing anyway?
You ought to try sobriety once and a while. It does wonders for your

Hey, Bill here's a simple two-plus-two concept that even a wacko like you
can understand: When Cheek is crawled under his little rock, all is quiet.
When Cheek slithers out, with supposedly useful information disguised as
advertising for his interface and other products, shit happens. You get

Naw, Cheek. I'm not going any way. My initial thought was to keep quiet
and let you blather on about the things that you like to talk about
(mainly defecation and fecal matter). I kept my mouth shut until you
posted your press release. I asked if you believed that it was appropriate

Tell me Bluster Bill... Have you ever sold one of your famous CE232

It's very difficult question about freedom and other things in US and
Russia. In Russia you can put any technical information in the article
or on the WEB. If you found some security codes, cellular codes, e/t/c
- you can put them anywere. And nobody will claim you.

I've been following this stuff for a while, too. If you don't like it,
the solution is simple. Don't read it. When you have such an open
forum, you are bound to have a lot of wasted bandwidth. Perhaps it's
time for rec.radio.scanner.moderated? I personally see no need for it,
as I don't sit and read each article. I look for interesting threads,
and when they turn this direction, I ignore them.....

I usually lurk, but I must post an opinion about your above comment, and others in
this group:

You must be kidding!

Are you really this much of an asshole? The group was nice and peaceful until you
came along. And you wrote several books? Who would publish you?

Your professionalism is yet to be seen, and you come across as very arrogant. Did

Not straight and up front, you haven't. You've been going over spilt
milk of months ago in another place that has nothing to do with here
and now.

>I'm willing to wind this thing down...All I wanted was to have my say...
>blurt out and get my greivance with you off my chest.
>Done unless you persist.

Then it's done....not accounting for "message delay" of recently sent
but not received/responded mail. You've had your say and there isn't
a thing I can do about the past, perceived or real.

The present counts. AND for whatever it is worth, I am in a very
unique position of being a hobbyist foremost, followed by a
simultaneous existence in the profession and business of radio.

I am going to post an occasional FAQ and even a Press Release, and I
don't have the foggiest idea of HOW I can totally separate the
professional side of me from the Hobbyist side of me. My ability to
create a FAQ and post it to the forum is a combination of BOTH sides
of me, and I can't sterilize it to the satisfaction of those who want
me gone or to ride my wave. If I were strictly a dumbass hobbyist
like our good pal, Peter J., then I'd be like HIM and not post
anything of worth. I'd just be like HIM....like a housefly, and
bother people.

Plainly put, I am not going to be taken to task for serving my Hobby
and being in the business, too. I am going to exercise reasonable
caution - perhaps even go the extra mile - in terms of avoiding
blatant commercialism, but ONLY because I don't like to mix business
with pleasure in that sense. On the other hand, after 33 years of
being a hobbyist and a professional in radio, I have yet to see even
the slightest possibility of surgically separating the two. It is not
possible. So I am what I am......and there will be times when one or
the other or BOTH sides of me show in my articles and postings.

I am NOT going to be taken to task for that. You speak of CONFLICT OF
INTEREST. Sure there is. But it's out in the open for all to see.
It's not skillfully hidden under disguise, like SOME OF THE SHILLS for
other companies that are here!!!!!!!!!!! You don't see 'em, because
they're masquerading under the guise of the Hobby.

SHILL: "Hey, Hugh, I just got me one of those new Horsey-Cow 6969
scanners, and man are they ever hot stuff!"

HUGH: "Far out. Where can one be had?"

SHILL: "Horsey-Cow, Inc. 6969 - 69th Place, Podunk, Iowa 69696 and
the have a special deal on software for it, too."

You zero in on ME because you KNOW what the score is and I don't make
any bones about it. Meanwhile, twenty others slink in and out of here
daily, doing their dirty work, and you miss the effect of what's going
on in its entirety.

Something is wrong with that picture. But yes, indeed, I am in "the
business". That's why a lot of me comes FREE for the asking of a
question here. I won't sell someone a book or my WORLD SCANNER REPORT
or even a mod-kit or instruction sheet if......-=IF=- .... I can
adequately and properly meet his need for free here.... If I have to
go do an hour's research, then chances are I will tell him where that
work has already been done and direct him to THAT source, whether it
happens to be mine or someone else's.

Whenever there is a duplicity of sources - mine and someone else's -
then I try like hell to include all the options and alternatives.

It's the best I can do, Hugh. For some, it ain't good enough, but
then nothing will be good enough. So I really don't care about THEM.
For the majority, it is good enough and it's to THEM and their drummer
that I will march, me and my drummer. This necessarily excludes
Hizoner Michael Alexander, Johnny Mackey, Peter J. Boe...and maybe a
few others.

Tough. They can pack sand or whistle "Dixie" for all I care. Or they
can shut up and tend to their own business........and leave me the
hell alone so I can leave them the hell alone.

On that note, it's done, unless you want to talk about something
herein or other pertinent matters in an upfront, straight manner. We
don't have to agree. If flames are not satisfactory, then don't flame
me. Don't leverage one side of me against the other side. Don't
leverage, period. Then we don't have to agree and we can still get
along just fine. If you were a US citizen and were a Republican, and
me a Democrat, I'd offer to hug your elephant and let you kiss my ass.

But since you're not a Republican and I'm not a Democrat, we don't
have to cross that bridge. That's one obstacle out of the way. Eh?

I'm afraid you're a bit on the naive side, Mr. Shaggy. I will let Mr.
Cheeks speak for himself, though. I have access to logs of much of the
past activity on Mr. Cheeks FIDO scanner forum, ScanRadio. In the
following post, he lays out rather succinctly how he feels about this
group:

Date: 30 Apr 96 07:31:03

Subj: Anarchy in the Newsgroups

Yo! Kurt:

Those are the people who wanted to turn this echo into a FLAME forum, too.
They were proscribed from doing it, so they went to the anarchy of the
newsgroups.

You're right, once in a while when I have a minute, I hop onto
rec.radio.scanner and hose them down a little. Who cares? What
difference
does it make?

(....deleted)

I can't control it on the newsgroups and therefore do not participate there
to any appreciable extent.
Thus, this echo will prove to be a refreshing oasis to people like me who
are more interested in high technology and using radio.

--- End Quoted Text--

Well, as you can see, Mr. Cheeks is back aboard to 'hose us down' a
little. Enjoy the spray....
