Hi Folks. I have been experimenting with using my Nikon SB-DX flash with my
Canon EOS 10D digi cam to see if this flash would fire from the camera. I
put it in the hotshoe and of course it didn't work. However, when I hooked a
PC cable up to the camera and flash, it worked perfectly, I think. I took a
variety of shots using the 4 different options on the SB-DX, (TTL, Auto,
Manual, etc.) I want to find out if anyone else has done this or something
similar and the results. The only thing I am concerned about is some kind of
weird electronic glitch that could damage the camera or the flash using this
setup continually. The Canon 550X flash is made for the camera, but I'd have
to spend another $250 or so and I am on a budget. Another issue is, how to
set this rig up on a bracket with some kind of generic hotshoe or adapter,
since I have to hold the flash in my left hand and the camera in the right.
It's a bit awkward, but so far, so good. Any advice is worthy. Also, if I
called Canon or Nikon support, each company would probably advise against
this setup. Thanx. later steveb

You can't use TTL with this set up. Only auto and manual. You won't hurt
the camera when useing a PC cord. You "possibly" could when mounting
directly on the camera. As far as mounting, just go to the camera shop and
pick up a bracket. Strobo-Frame is my choice, but there are other brands
out there. If you have a PC setup working now, there is no need to buy any
kind of "hotshoe" adapter. Not sure why you think you would need anything
like that when you've got it working now. Just buy a bracket that has an
ISO shoe mount.

I will make this brief because pictures will be better than trying to
explain it, and if I send pictures it won't be here.
I normally advise against brand mixing but, if you understand what can be
done, it can be made to work.
Canon and Nikon pinouts are not compatible, look at the five pins on the DX
(28 or 80)
And the pins on the Canon , they serve different purposes from different
locations.
The ttl on the nikon will not work with the Ettl sytem of the Canon.
You need to connect the commonality of the flash and camera, that is the
pins that do "DO" the same functions.
Then the camera will work in Auto mode only which is OK for use if you know
flash, but bad for two reasons based on what you don't have
A) The Canon Ettl is excellent and the 10 works well with the 550
A1) The Nikon is excellent on a Nikon. You will miss certain benefits.
B) Never know if something slips and you short out. Unless you make a cord
as folllows.

The common pins to both are:
A) Centerpole or large center pin.
B) Sides of the shoe which are the grounds.

So if it was me and I have done this to link certain models of digitals to
studio units I would find a SC-17 Nikon cable, go to my website and you see
conversions of these with cables to various studio units from the five
strand Nikon SC-17. Basically it's like a vasectomy. You open one part that
goes on the Canon side and cut the wires that aren't needed.
-OR-
Another way is to locate a GENERIC (basically the same thing with just a
cheap generic hotshoe to hotshoe) with just the center pin and side ground.
but it is their quality and poor worksmanship I dont trust.
I make these custom cables all the time. But you have to be careful.
The camera brackets are another section on my website.

Let me know if you need help...
