I'm curious whether any of yose other folk here have "pet names" for
your dogs. Names other than their official names, that is.

My Peppi has a long list of such names, stating with Pepsi-Cola;
passing thru Sweetheart, Sweetness, Honey, and the like; and ending
up with Butt-wagger. There are a few that are not so politely put
into print, but he understands that they're affectionate anyway.

Yours?

Great topic!

Well, my dog, Elvis (the current heartworm surviving king himself) was
adopted by me last year as a three year old...he was already named by his
original owners when he was three months.

I wind up calling him 'buddy' a lot, as in "hey buddy, wanna go in?" or
"c'mon buddy let's go out". I also have to admit when he's sick (not often
at all, but with the heartworm recovery, it's been a rough few nites) I call
him 'honey'. I also have called him 'cutey pie' on moments of absolute
tooooo cuteness... I find he responds to all of them...but his favorite?
"Cookie Monster" because he loves those cookies!!!

I've tried seeing if he responds to any others, but surprisingly, he only
does with the above mentioned ones. He seems to really love the 'honey'
name, but I'm pretty sure thats cuz' of my tone..

My friend calls him 'dufus' sometimes (to piss me off I'm sure) but Elvis
just beats his tail and looks at HIM like HE'S the one obviously confused!

Most of the time something slips out before you realize it and all of a
sudden you're calling your pet (Ella by true name):

Ella Bella
Smella
Ell's Bells
Snoogle Dog
Leapy Girl
Queen of the May
Potato Butt
Squeezle
Little Head (take your mind out of the gutter, she's only 6 pounds and
she's got a little head)

I'm shocked she knows her name at all. ; )

One of Macula's earliest nicknames was (and is) 'Flubberbutt'. When first
teaching her to sit on command, and even today when she's excited, her butt
would hit the ground and immediately bounce back up, bringing the rest of
her with it. Thing is, the bounce was usually higher than the original
position, just like that magical Disney substance, flubber. :-)

Collective names for all of them -
Noodle Butt
Noodle Head

Jack - Dude, Knot Head, Jack-a-roo, Jack-a-roni
Sasha - Sweet Pea, Miss Piggy, Punkin, Chicky
Rufus - Roof, Roo, Roofie, Woofie, WUFus (emphasis on the WUF)
Joey (the smallest at 45 lbs) - Joey Monster (when we first got him and
occasionally still), Munchkin (after obedience classes)

When Jack and Sasha were puppies, they both answered to "JackandSasha".

Gremlin`s include Grem, Grembelink,
Bebby-girl and Honeybee.

The boys are deaf so they dont care what we call them, Gremlin answers to
all her pet names, but not to the boys or the cats, [except to look at them
directly when we say their names, so she knows who`s who].

I have 14 cats so I`m not listing all theirs, it would take too long !!

Actually, I'm a firm believer in nicknames. Partly because it keeps us
mere hoomans frrom overusing their "real" names. When I use a dog's
"real" name, I need it to give ful attention as there is (more likely
than not) some important information coming up....in the form of a
command. The other part of why I like nicknames is because I *do* love
to babble and coo stupid names at my boys. I can't help it.

Finn (GSD):

Mike (Tabby Cat):

I sometimes wonder what they'd call me, though.

Oh, yes, do we have pet names!

Anja (pronounced On-Ya), used to get "the Anja-nator" as a puppy, as she
could terminate a room in the time it took you to say it. Now, at age 6, she
just gets the following cutsie names - Bubba, Puppy, Buppy, Beebee, Sweetie,
and my fav., Pretty Girl.

Frodo the puppy has a more extensive list, and by dog he responds to most of
them! Fro', Dodo, Fro-diddy-o-do (often shortened to Fro-diddy or just plain
diddy), Goober, Goofball, Cutie, Wiggle-Waggle, Zoom-Zoom, and Mommy's
Little Alarm Clock.

Hemmingway has a great name anyway, but he usually gets called

Shamrock became, predictably, Sham; then Shambles; then for a brief and
bizarre period that got expanded to Shambelocity; and that got shortened
down again to Bloss, which is what I usually call her now.

She also answers to "Big Dog" -- so many small kids point at a Great Dane

Thanks Jenn!
She is a Belgian Malinois. Probably from BYB(her ears don't stand up
just right) but I will never
know her background, as I obtained her from the
"evaluation" side of a "kill shelter" TLAC. I believe
she would have surely been euthanized.:(
http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/animals/services.htm

The name Clovis came about because DH and I collect Indian Arrowheads
and artifacts. Clovis points are some of the oldest Paleo points around.
http://www.150.si.edu/150trav/remember/r112a.htm
Also because it fit with Blade, my GSD. When I named Blade
I wasn't thinking about Spears, knives or artifacts. I just had to
come up with a "B" name rather quickly.

I sing to our Duchess of Doodle all the time. I didn't think of the one
you mentioned (but she'll be hearing it soon...), but enjoy singing the
old "Little Orphan Annie" song or "Pretty Baby" with Duchie Doodle's

don't react in the same way at all. Critics; go figure.

Do people who make up ridiculous pet names for their pets have different
relationships with them than people who use their official call names all the
time?

I note that some of our best trainers on this usenet group haven't piped in with
answers to this question.

I've often thought that I'd be a better dog trainer (and that Cubbe would be
better behaved) if I didn't look at her so often and think she was so cute.

Your cat has a nickname common with my dog Gizmo. We call her Gizzy
all the time. Also Giz, Pretty Puppy, Baby, Pretty Girl, FluffHead.
My neice calls her Gizzy Bizzy. She's nine.

Wicket, our other dog gets Wicky, Wickster, Pretty Puppy, Baby, Puppy,
and Fluffhead. She doesn't respond to Fluffhead but Gizmo does.

My husband calls both our dogs Poophead and S***head in addition to
the other nicknames.

Oh jeez....practically every song or jingle around here gets Coda's name
stuck in somewhere. I used to *always* sing "C.O.D.A., Coda..." to the
tune of the Kinks "Lola"...it worked out great! Then, just recently, DH
has started doing it...all of the time! I wish I could remember more, some
are VERY funny!
One thing DH does that cracks me up, is say/ask something to Coda, then
answer back in the "Coda voice" (as if the dog is answering him!), usually
it's, "Coda, why didn't you do_____, while we were at work?" or, "Coda,
wanna help me bring in some firewood?" Usually the answer (from Coda, via
DH) is: "Oh Dad, you know I'd love to help you, but I've got a little
problem here...No opposible thumbs!" <laugh> Okay, it's corny, but it
makes me laugh!

That's a great question! I wonder too. I'm *sure* Coda knows that
certain behaviors that make me laugh will almost always get him out of
trouble. <laugh>
I'm just glad he's a pretty good dog, overall & doesn't get into alot of
trouble!
He pouts, meaning, if he's reprimanded (usually for begging), he is told to
"Go to his bed". He doesn, but he does a lazy turn, then flops down with
his whole body & does this MOST pitiful sign/snort.
What a brat.

You think that's bad. Here's what passes for hilarity at our house:

Cubbe will be comfortably curled on her corner of the couch. Jim walks by,
addresses me and says "that dog is not allowed on the couch." I say "you're

I don't know. But I've seen both serious and casual trainers use
ridiculous pet names. Hershe gets Hersh, or Hershwersh,
big-brown-dog-with-big-brown-toes, and schnozz. Angel gets angelface
and pooch. Dana gets pookie, danadog, danananananana, and poophead.

Jasmine's only been here two months, so the only nickname she's picked
up so far is "Jazz", but Cyril the male Maine Coon (a *big* breed, and
fluffy) is "squeakytoy" because he has a very quiet, high-pitched mew.

Jasmine will go find the cats if you say "Where's <cat name>", and
knows both of Cyril's names

the couch. He was never allowed on the couch, and Guiness is too old to
get on the couch, so he just never did get on the couch.
Then...one day, he & Coda were playing, and Little (the cat) was on the back
of the couch, staring out the window, making noises at birds. Coda kept
cocking his head from one side to the other at the funny cat noises she was
making. John found that hilarious, and then invited--yes, INVITED, Coda

Hubby does the singing them songs thing with their names added [ I`m
admitting to nothing myself, in that regard !!! ].

He also makes up what he considers "geat poetry", particularly of the c*ts.
Stuff like,
"Bonnie man, lives in a frying pan, because he can"..........

Now do you see what I mean about his sanity Jenn ? <g>

Gremlin "sings" along to the Star Trek themes [ but not to the totally
innapropriate Enterprise theme ].

You're not talking about the "Enterprise" theme, are you? I'm not a fan of
the song either, but I think it's entirely appropriate..."It's been a long

Our Tawney (that's what the vet and the county know her by) also goes
by Crash (from her sport of flinging a toy down the stairs, diving
after it, and skidding across the hardwood floor into the French
doors; also from the time she jumped from the second-floor catwalk,
landed on and demolished a bookcase, and was sitting in the middle of
the mess with a great big grin on her face when we arrived), and
Bananas (one of her favorite foods: she'll eat banana peels if we let
her; we're not sure they're good for her, so we try not to).

But sometimes you "slip up", right?

While we're in the questionable foods department (which would
undoubtedly be better put in a different thread), I can't understand
why my Peppi seems indifferent to ice cream. I've never known a dog
that didn't absolutely love ice cream.

Which reminds of the beagle my family had when I was growing up.
Duke liked eating lima beans. I did not. So we had a deal under
the table.

Joey is our smallest, at 45 lbs, and that's one of his too! It's funny how
many nick names I forget I call them (like "Skinny Butt" for Jack) after
seeing the ones here. It's a wonder any of them know their name at all!

I don't like the song itself really, but I think it does suit "the mood" of
the show, nostalgically speaking - it is not "Star Trek", sure. I rarely
have the opportunity to listen to it though, as I work when it is on so DH
tapes it for me. I FF over the opening. ;)

If it were instrumental only it might be more passable I think.

As do we.
Its almost a competition now, to press the FF button after the first note
and before the second. I`m in the lead over hubby on the timing so far.

Kavik is Cubby (sorry Cubbe) because he looked like a little polar bear cub

Toklat is Poke, or Poke Bottom
Rex was Rexer or Rexie depending on my mood.

Hi Beth,
I asked! I told them I wanted this dog with this # and for them to PLEASE
evaluate her as she was the only dog I wanted that was currently at their
facility. Actually there as a GSD, but unfortunately someone had applied
for her before me and they were accepted.

Anyway if one is interested enough in a particular dog at the city
pound/ TLAC(Town Lake Animal Center) than one can apply
for a dog on evaluation side. Of course if said dog has behavior
issues or is sickly then there is NO way to get them out of
that section.:((( There was also PB baby female baby I almost
chose, but I am not that familiar with PB's and she looked like
she had illness. Eyes with junk in them and kind of runny nose.:(
Besides I had already fallen in love with Clovis. But geez
was she not what I expected. LOL
