NOTE: Prior to 1997, one or two weeks of charts were not officially
issued during the Christmas and New Year period. In the above
table, for years in which no charts were issued at this time
of year in January, as marked with a "[+]", the number one
single is taken from the very first chart issued in January
instead. As an example, the equivalent number one single for
the week ending 6th January 1989 (for which no chart was
issued) is calculated as being the number one from the week
ending 15th January 1989 (i.e. the first issued chart of 1989)
which sees The Beach Boys' "Kokomo" as that week's biggest
seller.

7. This week's top 50:

This chart spans sales from Saturday 22nd December to Friday 28th
December, thus covering an interesting mix of music sales in the
few days before Christmas and the few days afterwards. Normally
things would have slowed down after Christmas, but with digital
music players being one of the hottest gifts to give this
Christmas, we suddenly have a situation where people are flocking
to digital music retailers on the internet just after Christmas
to fill their new gifts with content.

Timbaland's "Apologize" spends a 6th big week at the top, with
not much action in the top 10 except for Matchbox Twenty and
The Potbelleez re-entering the top 10 with their current singles.
Displaced by those artists is Delta Goodrem's "Believe Again",
increasing its freefall speed, diving from number 2 to 6 last
week and now down to number 11 this week. Also suffering
a big drop is Australian Idol winner Natalie Gauci as "Here
I Am" tumbles from number 10 to 18, although when you see
what's going on in record stores, her CD single is still
selling solidly in the top 3 after 5 weeks. On the albums
chart, Australian Idol's least successful winner is still
unable to crack the top 10 with "The Winner's Journey" still
stuck at number 11 for Natalie.

49. CRANK THAT (SOULJA BOY) - Soulja Boy Tell 'Em
CD singles chart: (not released until 12/1/2008)
Digital track chart: (not in top 40)

Although it won't hit shops until mid-January, 17 year-old
American rapper Soulja Boy has accumulated enough digital
sales to be the only new entry into this week's top 50
singles chart at number 49. His single, "Crank That" topped
the American Billboard Hot 100 singles charts late last year
for an impressive 7 weeks and made the top 3 in the UK and
New Zealand. "Crank That" is Soulja Boy's first single to
be lifted from his "Souljaboytellem.com" album which is
out now. Soulja Boy's real name is DeAndre Ramone Way
and he has stated his goal is to make upbeat party music
that avoids the negative images that hip-hop often portrays.
