For those of you who are interested in funny tunings
I found this in Guitar World Acoustic No 47
Stephen Stills 4+20. tuning EEEEBE (low to high)
(b is only unaltered string) 48 bpm

Left the bar lines out but each block is as bar.
Hope that it posts and makes some sort of sense,
it took me ages to do it as it is the first time
I've tried putting tab in a post.

There's probably a little mistake, for me it's better EBEEBE or DADDAD

I've seen that EEEEBE tuning published myself and it sure seems like a
really hard way to play a tune that plays easily in DADF#AD.

Hi, Michael--

I saw in a CSN&Y video a segment from an old TV show where Stills played 4+20
in what appeared to be dropped-D tuning.

So that's how I've always played it, as the bass line can be found quite easily
that way.

Actually, Stills used the 'weird E' tuning for Suite Judy Blue Eyes as well.
Years ago I read an interview with him where he talked about various
tunings. He said he got this one from Bruce Palmer, bass player from his
Buffalo Springfield days.

I always thought 4+20 was played with an open E tuning (EBEG#BE) . . . That's
how I play it anyways.

I can't believe anyone could make sense out of that EEEEBE stuff. What octaves
of E are the 5th, 4th, and 3rd strings tuned to?

Bingo! Stills has confirmed this several times, in magazine interviews,
documentaries, etc. This topic comes up around here every 6 months or so, and
the peanut gallery always chimes in with its favorite tunings, but EEEEBE is
indeed the tuning Stills used for both 4+20 and Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, and he
attributes it to Bruce Palmer, just as you say.

I play it in DADGAD.

I tend to concur. I had a hard time seeing the "weird E" tuning in his
fingering when it falls right to hand in open E or D.

Stupid question maybe, but do you use conventional string gauges for this tuning?

I don't think it's stupid at all, having wondered the same thing.
Unfortunately I've never seen Stills address the issue of string gauges. I
solve this problem by "reinscribing what I can't surpass". I normally keep
one of my guitars dedicated to "D family" tunings (e.g. DADGAD or Open D) and
for this song I tune the G string down to D. That gives me DADDAD which if
capoed up 2 frets would be EBEEBE. The song seems to work just fine in this
tuning, so eventually I stopped wondering about Stills' choice of string
gauges. The song can even be played pretty well in DADGAD or Open D, but
having the G string tuned down to D gives it that really nice unison/modal
kind of sound.

Whenever I change the tuning to do this song, I follow it up with Patty
Griffin's "You Are Not Alone". I don't think she uses this tuning, but it
works really well. Both songs have a wonderful haunting kind of feeling.

I have no idea what this means, but I
know it impresses lawyers and such.
So I agree..:-)

I play the Stills stuff in EBeebe'
But I'm gonna try dropping that 5th string.

I like the stuff Stills does on his album -
"Acoustic Side/Electric Side"

Yes, I was delighted to see that my random signature generator was able to
provide him with that much amusement. Once I get the random number generator
installed, it should be able to keep him entertained for months at a time.

I don't see many people talking about Stills, but I've always thought he was
a hellofa guitar player. Even going all the way back to Buffalo Springfield,
and all the cool stuff he did with a wah wah pedal.

Just caught Stills @ Belterra Casino.....his guitar playing kicked butt....he
still has the chops....one surprise was when strapped on his Martin D45SS in
DADDAD and proceeded to entertain the audience with a solo version of "Man of
Constant Sorrow". Always a underated player in my opinion.

Yes, when I posted it in I was wondering
about what guage strings and which octaves
were used. With standard strings you would
probably have trouble getting an acceptable
tension on all of them.
