I can't promise to post the lyrics to all the songs for which
I know the lyrics. So, I need help.

Do you know of any songs that are sung by a woman about another woman,
like "Nainou.N vali ne hai mera dil luta," (this one is in the ITRANS
book) or to another woman like, "Reshmi shalvar kuRta jaali ka" or
with another woman like "Mere mehboob mei.N kya nahi.N" (haven't checke
d whether this one is in the ITRANS book)?
Have Lata & Asha sung (m)any songs together? I remember seeing
a cassette in Chicago with their duets. Should have bought it
right there. Next time I went to the store it was gone. Haven't
been able to find another like it.

Sabah, I think this song is "main kya jaanu re", which would make a
different point entirely! (prob. just a typo on your part, but i wanted
to make the correction, since this has become a feminist thread, and this
song would make a great feminist anthem, renouncing the cult of romance
that simone de b. denounced etc.).

another song i thought of is "tauba, tauba" from mr. natwarlal, which i
have always thought would make a great rap song. it's sung in a very
rap-like style.

By a woman about another: "Mere ghar aayi ek nanhi pari" by Lata
in Kabhi Kabhi. One of the rare mother-daughter songs (Hindi film
moms generally sing about, or rather, live and die for their munnas
and laadlas). More recently, "meri banno ki aayegi baraat" from
Aaina.
With another woman: "man kyun behka ri behka" (Lata-Asha) and
"neelam ke nabh chhaye" (Lata, some female singer that I cannot
identify and a female chorus) in Utsav. There is a lovely all-female
song in Namkeen (Asha is one of the singers) which goes something
like this: "aanki chali, banki shali, chaurangi mein jhaanki chali"
(at least, that's what I hear :) ). Also, "dekho idhar bhi, jaane
tamanna, pyaase khade hain hum tumhari nazar ke" by (Asha-Usha)
from Imtihaan.
That's what I can think of right now. Will be scratching my head
for more. Good thread, Saba.

Veena.

Shabari, I think you misunderstood the thread that Saba started.
She just asked for songs *about* or *with* other women; there is
no implication of male-bashing or renouncing romance.
As for the song "dil vil pyaar vyaar, main kya jaanu re", the
second line goes: "jaanu to jaanu bas itna ke main tujhe apna
jaanu re", so it is disqualified as a "feminist anthem" :)

Allah Tero naam is not duet. There is a little chorus.
Mainly sung by the legend.

Btw, while there are numerous Asha/Lata and Asha/Geeta duets,
the Geeta/Lata
combination seems to be rather uncommon. As a matter of fact,
at the moment only
two such duets come to mind:

Ankhyiaan bhool gayi hai sona ( Goonj uthi shehanai)
Hum panchi mastane ( Dekh kabira roya)

Can't recall it off hand, but I think Yahudhi also has a
Geeta/Lata duet...an eminently
forgettable one though :-)

Any others?

This song *is* already in ISB. At least in the list of the songs yet
to be added. I had added this one last summer. :) Check out
"http://splinter.coe.neu.edu/~rajiv/newsongs.html"

Also, "Mausam hai aashiqaana", "Ye zindagi usi ki hai" are in the ISB too.

There are many other songs which are surprisingly not yet in the ISB. I
would try adding them over the summer. Like

1) Maine puucha chaand se (Abdullah)
2) Chori chori koi aaye (I am dying to listen to this one. Haven't heard since
a long time. Can some kind soul post the lyrics ?)
3) Dil luutne waale zaadugar ab maine tujhe pahchaana hai..
4) Tere mere beech mein kaisaa hai ye bandhan (Ek duje ke liye)
5) Rang aur nuur ki baarat kise pesh karuun

and lots of others.

Will add 4) and 5) tonight, though I should really be working..:). Ah well..

This thread on female duet is very interesting. Has any one
compiled a similar list of male duets?? If so, please post.
Let me begin with few that I know:

KK, Manna - RDB - Sholay
2. Huzoor is kadar bhi na itarake chaliye
Suresh Wadkar, Bhupinder - RDB - Masoom
3. Saa re gaa maa maa saa re gaa
KK, Rafi - SDB - Chupke Chupke
4. Ek chatur naar badi hoshiyar
KK, Manna ( and Mehmmod) - RDB - Padosan
5. Khuda hee judaa kare to kare
KK, Rafi - Usha K - Aap To Aise Na The
6. Bachana ae haseeno lo main aagaya
KK, Rafi - RDB - Hum Kissi Se Kam Nahin
7. Chand mera dil chandani ho tum
KK, Rafi - RDB - Hum Kissi Se Kam Nahin
8. Bane chaahe dushman zamaanaa hamaaraa

9. Ye desh hai veer jawano ka
Rafi, Mahendra Kapoor- OPN - Naya Daur
10. Ai maa teri surat se alaag bhagawan ki soorat kya hogi

"Tum bin jaaoon kaha, ke duniya me aake" is the only song that
I know, which is sung SEPARATELY ( KK and Rafi ) by 2 male
singers. ( I like the one sung by KK, even though I am a RAFIan)

Does any one know any other songs sung separately either by
2 male or by 2 female singers??

Well, it's terribly regressive of me, but I've seen too many Hindi films
to be able to ignore a cry for help :-)

I'll also put it down as service in the name of the immortal Lata.

This 'set of songs' has Asha singing. So not really a 'male duet'.

The second singer is Balbir. The second time I am correcting a Rafi-X duet
to a Rafi-Balbir duet this week ! A third song comes to mind. 'bhej
chhanaachhan khub rupaiya...' from 'ab dilli door nahi.n'.

Well, there is the song which is the pet weapon in the armour of the
KKKlaners against the Rafi-ans: the slow version of the title song
from Mukaddar kaa Sikandar by Rafi.

The fast one was, of course, sung by KK (could one say KK pulled a
fast one over Rafi, then?) ;-)

As for 2 females ... there's the 'jaa jaa re jaa baalamwaa' by Lata,
which is followed up close by Asha's 'jaa jaa jaa sajnaa' ... One
can't call it the same song, though. It's more like a female duet.

Interesting thread.

Ravindra.

There are more than a hundred male duets. All the AB movies in which there
were more than one heroes had a couple of duets. To name a few which I can
recall:

1. Chal Chal mere bhai - Naseeb
2. Salamat rahe dostana hamara - Dostana
3. Amar Akbar Anthony - that was a triplet though
4. Aana jaana laga rahega - Giraftaar
5. Don't worry be happy - Toofan (not sure about that)
6. Yamma yamma - Shaan
7. Ek rasta aaha aaha - Ram Balraam
8. Jaanu meri jaan - Shaan
9. Hum premi prem karna jaane - Parvarish
10.Lamboo ji lamboo ji - Coolie
11.Asli kya nakli kya hai, inko aaj bata denge - Mahaan
12.Mohabbat bade kaam ki cheez hai - Trishul
13.Hum woh hain jo do aur do paanch- Do aur do paanch
14.Tune mujhe dekha nahin , dekha hai..- "

Some others without AB:

1. Tu mujhe suna main tujhe sunaun - Chandni

How about a 'double duet' in the film suhaag (can't remember the song The two pairs
sing) and in film 'aankhe' (if my db is not corrupted that Govinda and Chunkey
mega masaala movie). But not sure as to how many singers are used.

Coming then to triples

1) Yamma Yamma (RDB,KK,?)
2) Amar akbar anthony title song (Mukesh,Rafi,KK)
3) Har dil jo pyaar karegaa vo gaana gaaye
3).Aap ke kamre me koi rahata hai (Two brothers and zeenat sing in the film).

Yaadonki baarat must have a male duet.

1.Yaadon ki Naarat Nikli.. (Two brothers sing)

Just a few comments. First, I think Bachana Ae Haseeno is a solo sung by
Kishore only. Also, it probably inspired the song "Ruk Ja O Dil Deewane"
from DDLJ.

Next, The song "Chand Mera Dil" was sung only by Rafi. I can see the
confusion though. There were actually four songs combined together into
one. "Chand Mera Dil" (Rafi), "Aa Dil Kya Mehfil" (Kishore), "Tum Kya Jano
Mohabbat Kya Hai" (RD Burman), and "Mil Gaya Hum Ko Saathi" (Asha,
Kishore). So, If just the first is given, then Rafi sang alone. If the
entire 4-song is given, then there were four singers: Rafi, Kishore, RD
Burman, and Asha Bhosle.

Finally, the song "Yeh Desh Hai Veer Jawanon Ka" from Naya Daur is sung by
Rafi and Balbir. Not Rafi and Mahendra Kapoor.

How about the song from Rudaali that is sung once by Bhupen, Asha and
Lata each? I think the song goes like "Samay O Dheere Chalo".

If you allow to include "Rahul & I", then Asha sings "Kuchh na Kaho";
of course, Lata and Sanu sing the song separately in the film.

Also, both Hariharan and S.P.B. sing "Roja Jaaneman", although I think
only one version is retained in the film (SPB one, inspite of popular
acceptance that Hariharan did a better job).

Akele Hum Akele Tum has "Raja ko rani se" sung by both Udit and Sanu,
although again only one version is retained (the Udit one, of course:-)

Following a slightly different path, but in the same spirit, the song
"Waada raha sanam" in Khiladi is sung solo by Abhijit and also as a duet
by him and Alka.

Another interesting one is the title song from "Do aur do paanch" sung
once by KK and later by Rajesh Roshan Himself! I know of another
instance of Rajesh Roshan singing. That is in the film "Kaamchor", when
Rakesh Roshan tries to play an old and slow gramophone player, and
Rajesh simulates the malfunctioning device. I think the song was "Tumse
Badhkar duniya mein...". Could somebody post any more instances?

Amit Kumar, Shailendra Singh - LP - Parvarish

Rafi(?), Shailendra - LP - Chacha Bhatija
16. Saat ajube is duniya meiN aathaviN apani jodi
Rafi, Mukesh - LP - Dharamveer
17. Yeh waqt ki hera pheri hai
KK, Rafi (?) - KA - Hera Pheri
18. Amar Akbar Anthony title song (actually this is a trio!)
KK, Shailendra, Mahendra K - LP - AAA

Also, there was another male trio in Chashm-e-Baddur but I cannot recall the words
nor the singers.

One point I would like to make is that a very small percentage of male duets
(like #12 above and may be #4 which is a gem in comedy songs) could be categorized
as classics, unlike female duet gems like 'tumko piya dil diya kitne naaz se',
'kaahe tarsaae', 'dil kyuN baheka ri baheka',.... Male duets were rare in older
films and, as is seen from the above list, started growing in numbers after the
advent of "multi-starrer"s by which time quality of film music, in general, had
already started deteriorating.

Hello,
I think it's time again this year that I again mention
that the "mother of all duets" is the following song.
And I am still waiting for some help in recalling the lyrics:

This is a one-of-a-kind duet. There are 2 male singers and
2 female singers. The most interesting part is that
the 2 male voices always sing together (never heard separately)
and the same holds for the two female voices.

Film: Train (not that: "gulaabi aankhe" the train)
MD: RDB
*ing: Dharmendra, V Khanna (?), Neetu, ??

From Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, "Deewana Dil Deewana".

Also, as far as I know, only Kishore Kumar sang "Jahan Teri Yeh Nazar Hai"
from Kaalia.

above song that you mention is from 'The burning train' ,

The song "Samay O, dheere chalo" from Rudaali has been sung
separately by both Asha and Lata. Another interesting fact: from
my memory, this seems to be the only song with *three* separate
versions (with the same lyrics): the above-mentioned two and
another by the MD, Bhupen Hazarika. I cannot recall if all three
versions were used in the movie.
An old song with two separate female versions: "Tum jiyo hazaron
saal, saal ke din ho pachaas hazar" by Asha and Geeta Dutt. There was
some controversy over this song; cannot remember the details as I
read it in Filmfare a long time ago. Only one version was used in the
movie, but recordings of both are available. I have to check my
Geeta and Asha collections to see if I have them.

Well here is a nice twist to this tale.

There is a song in which Kishore and Asha (I think) are singing.
What is curious about this esp. after Chitrahaar 9 is that
The first para KK sings for Dharmendra and Asha for Zeenat.
Then they change dresses (ya you guessed it, they had bhaang) and
become of the opposite sex and Asha sings for Dharam and KK for
Zeenat. Again in the third para they revert back. The movie is
Kaatilon ke Kaatil, MD K-A.

I remember vaguely seeing some other song. Any more instances.

BTW, the song is :

how about king of all male duets :-this song features 4 male
singers :

*damn* can't recall the words..here are the Pstats
MD : Madan Mohan
Film : Haqeeqat
Singers : Rafi, Talat, Manna, Bhupendra

Also, there is a Talat-Rafi duet "Gham ki andheri raat mein, dil ko na
udaas kar.." IMHO, Rafi sounds much much better than Talat in this
song.

The song goes like this ...

Pehli nazar me hamne tho apna
dil de diya tha thumko
par thumne der lagaayi
rukh rukh ke baat badayi

dekha tumhe to hamne
sabse nazar utahliii~ii~i
khone ki cheez kholi
paane ki cheez paali
hoo..oo seedhe na sahii..ii
ghoom ke sahi mil tho gaye hain
la la la la la ...
pehli nazar me hamne tho apna ...

hamne tumhari khathir
kya kya kiye bahane
hooo~oo~o asan nahi mohobath
ab tho ye baat maani
ho...o choda nahi dum..mm
jaise bhi ho hum mil tho gaye hain
la la la la la pahli nazar me ....

likha tha aasman par
yun hi ye khel hona...a~aa~a
pehle nazar ulajhna
phir dil ka mel hona
hoo...o choda ye gile.e~..e..
jaise bhi mile ... mil tho gaye hai

Great job by Rafi (as expected :) ), Amit Kumar, Asha & Usha &, ofcourse RDB!

Nice Song. This song is actually from Basant Bahar, sung by

It should be "Ketaki gulab juhi champak ban phulee..e"

>
>Nice Song. This song is actually from Basant Bahar, sung by
>Manna Dey and Bhimsen Joshi and composed by SJ.

It is a beautiful song and a 'toughie' to sing ... in particular all the beautiful 'taans' Pandit Bhimsen Joshi
produced!! Manna did a great job too but a 'good' singer can reproduce most of his 'taans' ... but ... alas(!!)
... Panditji's 'taans' require full fledged classical expertise and years of 'meditation'! :-)

I think it is a combination of 'Basant' and 'Bahar' raags and has been set to 'Dadra' taal. I think the
difficulty in the song comes from the sharp transition between the 'shuddh' and 'komal' swars and the 'shuddh'
and 'teevra' swars.

>I guess the one you were refering to is 'Aaj gawat man mero jhoomeke'
>sung by Amir Khan and D.V.Paluskar in Baiju Bawara.

Again, the 'taans' are really tough to reproduce!! ... although, IMO, each singer's 'taankari' is different and
one singer cannot, usually, reproduce another's 'taans' easily! The song was rendered very well by 'Ustad' and
'Pandit' ... but somehow I don't like that raag ('desi') very much.

No, it goes "pehli nazar me.n ham ne apanaa dil diyaa."
Interstingly, the same foursome that Arun mentions for
the 'Shaan' song has sung this one also: KK, Rafi, Asha,

I am trying to decide who'd be more irked: the SJ fans or the Naushad fans! :))
The classical singer that 'loses' to Manna Dey in this song is Bhimsen Joshi,
the film is 'Basant Bahar' and the MD is Shankar-Jaikishen.

Interesting hypothesis, Pranav, that great male duets are less numerous than
great female duets. Would need a more careful consideration, though. For one,
there are female duets of far greater calibre than you have mentioned; just
from the previous articles on the thread, 'Sharda', 'Do Phool,' 'Sangdil' and
'Barsaat Ki Raat' come to mind. For another, you are right in pointing out that
raucous multi-male (often involving more than 2 singers) songs have proliferated in
the recent period. However, there is no dearth of sensitively composed and sung
duets between two male singers. It would be easy to mention a whole lot of them
by appealing to some special categories, such as, classical songs ('Basant Bahar',
'Rani Rupmati', 'Sangeet Samrat Tansen,' 'Kalpana', 'Baiju Bawra' and so on),
Punjabi and other folk songs (see the other thread), humourous and male-
bonding type songs (even they used to be more melodious earlier, e.g.,
'Dilli Ka Dada', 'Johar Mehmood in Goa', 'Chalti Ka Naam Gadi', and 'Padosan'
the last one being both humourous and classical!). But it would be more
interesting to unearth songs which fall outside such genres. Let me just
mention three, which are in three very different moods, all involving
Rafi as one of the two singers:

Gam ki andheri raat me.n, dil ko na beqaraar kar
subah zaroor aaegi, subah ka intazaar kar
('Sushila'; Talat, Rafi; Jan Nisar Akhtar; C. Arjun)

vatan ki raah me.n vatan ke naujawaa.n shaheed ho
('Shaheed'; Rafi, Khan Mastana; Raja Mehdi Ali Khan; Ghulam Haider)

jis pyar me.n ye haal ho, us pyar se tobaa
('Phir Subah Hogi'; Rafi, Mukesh; Sahir; Khayyam)

These do not involve generic male voices screeching away. The distinctive
identities of the different male voices is preserved and their individual
voice-quality attributes are exploited by the structure and the tune.

The raag is indeed Basant Bahar (in an odd sense this is the title song of the
movie !). The taal is, well, ektaal (12 matra). Dadra has 6 matra and is used
mainly for lighter pieces (such as dadras and ghazals). This particular song
is set in the mould of khayal. Someone mentioned recently (on RMIC) that in
its ati-drut version, only every other beat of ektaal is played and hence it
'becomes' a dadra. In this case, all the 12 beats are disinct right to the end
of the song.

There are TWO songs with the same singer-Pstats. One of them is
"phir tumhaari yaad aayi ai sanam" (which is one of my favourite songs
of all time) ... a lovely, soft, Roopak taal song ... the other, the
words of which I can't recall, is sung on the screen by Bhupendra

as good as 'phir tumhaari ...'.

Anybody help me with the second song? ...

RMIM has gone over that several times. I remember listening to
another Rafi-Talat song in hMV's Naushad (4-cassette) album. There,
too, Rafi's voice sounds more sonorous than Talat's. Rafi, in
general, IMO, is better than Talat.

However, I can't imagine anyone but Talat singing 'shaam-e-GHam ki
qasam', 'jalte haiN jis ke liye' or 'aaNsoo samajh ke kyooN mujhe',
'zindagi dene waale sun' ... Talat, at his best, was simply

I think the third singer was Amit Kumar, not Bhupendra. While we are
on the topic of multiple-singers, I can remember a couple of great ones.
'ho ke majbuur mujhe usne bhoolaayaa hogaa...' from Haqiiqat was sung by Rafi,
Manna, Talat and Bhupinder. Another one was 'phir tumhaarii yaad aayii ey
sanam...' from Rustam Sohrab. Singers were Rafi, Manna and Sadat Khan. A
lovely song indeed.

It is strange, isn't it!!! It was clear (to me) as to who was the better classical
singer (by faaa...r!) between Manna and Pt. Joshi. Manna just shouted (well ...
almost) at a high pitch towards the end of the song ... and he wins (!!!) the
contest! (GOSH!!!) Manna's taans in the song can be reproduced and even 'bettered'
by a well trained and good singer ... but Pt. Joshi's gamak-taans, with all those
slides between the 'aakars' are extremely tough to reproduce ... or even to
attempt!! ... All this insite of Pt. Joshi not getting 'too-classically-heavy' in
the song!! If he'd gotten into full flow I think Manna would have done well to just
sit down, listen to and admire the great man!

... All said and done I think it was a 'film' and the MD had to
manipulate in such a way that the 'filmi-classical singer' wins at the end!!

Anand

You are correct! 'Dadra' is hardly ever used in a classical piece and it is usually
it's 'derivative - ektaal' which is used ... I mentioned 'Dadra' because it is the
'root' taal and while singing the song ... I was able to discern the following
beats (without having listened to the original recording of the song) ...

ketaki gulab juhi champak ban phoo~~ole
123123123123123.... (6 beats - which is not wrong!) :)

but the original song 'beat' is ...
121212121212... (12 beats - which is ektaal!)

This is from Parvarish ( most probably ) or Herapheri ( least probably )

Remember that line when heroines threated to commit suicide when heroes are

Me thinks that this song has a male singer in it too................, Shabbir Kumar ????

A famous duet by the sisters is the one from 'UTSAV' --------
'Man kyon behaka re behaka aadhi raat ko'
It is really awesome...

more later,
bye,

: sit down, listen to and admire the great man!

Hello Friends,

.. I haven't seen 'Basant Bahar' but I am familiar with this song ...

... Ketaki gulab juhi ...

.. It is a 'raag-maalika' between 'Basant' and 'Bahar' ...

... but, I notice only 'Basant' when Pt. Bhimsen Joshi is
singing and probably a mixture of 'Basant' and 'Bahar' when Manna is singing
..what Manna sang was definitely not a 'pure-basant' ...

.. did the scene in the movie go like this ... I am just making a 'guess'
from what I heard on the cassette ...

.. The 'disciple' (Manna) challenges the 'guru' (Pt. Bhimsen Joshi) that
the song could be sung in a mixture of 'Basant' and 'Bahar' raags (probably
associated with the change in the season from 'Basant' (autumn) to
'Bahar' (spring)) ... while the 'guru' sang it in only one raag ('Basant')

.. that is the only 'way' I can see why, in this case, the 'disciple' beats
the 'guru' ... for Pt. Joshi's rendering of this fascinating song is about
50 times as good as Manna's ... in my book.

.. maybe someone who has seen the movie may be able to help (!!)

thanks and regards,

Anand

There is one song in movie "Bahu-Begum" by Lata and Asha (MD - Roshan ):

"ChaD gaya jhula Saavan rut aayi" or something like that.
