As I'm looking to purchase a new bike, I'd be very grateful if anyone
can weigh on on their picks of the best 1-3 new models released this
year and/or give a link to any helpful article/s to read, reviewing
the writer or writers' pick of the better models released in 2010 and
saying why.

Best for what? Fun, commuting, touring, track days, learning, showing
off, motor cross, green laning, Paris - Dakar . . .

No one bike could be 'best' for all of these.

Look at the geographical cross-postings, and the complete absence of
precision as to the class of bike, and you have to assume that it's
either a journalist or a student of journalism trying to get us to do
his work for him.

There's an excellent article by Lucy Kellaway (yes, that is a tautology)
in today's FT about the circumstances in which it is right for a CEO to
be rude to a customer. Broadly, a student tried to get Apple PR to
write a paper for her. They refused. She complained to Steve Jobs.
Steve Jobs told her, very bluntly, to get lost.

And I'm entirely on the side of Apple in this case. Their PR department
more than likely have better things to do than help a self-important
student journalist complete a paper. And by better things, I mean
"ignoring genuine requests from genuine journalists".

I thought that was obvious.

The use of "motorbike" is a key give-away. I don't know anyone into
bikes who says "motorbike", except for in an ironic way. It's either
"bike", or "motorcycle". Only people who don't ride bikes say
"motorbike".

As you would expect, that wasn't quite the tenor of the FT piece. She
got arsey, pompous, self-righteous and sarcastic, and Jobs slapped her
down. Hmmm, he'd fit right in on ukrm. Perhaps we taught him all he knows.

That's quite perceptive, and accurate. I have been known to use the

Allow me to revert to the OP's original question, and to treat it with
the seriousness it merits.

I have heard and read that Spagthorpes are the very best motorbikes to
be bought these days. There is, however, a problem for the civilian
motorbike enthusiast in acquiring an example. The factory has become
immensely secretive about its current model range. Indeed, no
announcements or Press releases have been issued for several years. It
is known, however, that considerable advances have been made in the
field of Stealth technology, for which the company has received lavish
funding from both Qinetiq in the UK and Lockheed Martin’s Advanced
Development Program, based at Groom Lake in the USA. As a consequence
of this prioritisation, sales to the general public are nowadays all but
non-existent.

The purpose of the investment has been in developing a family of
motorbikes which are not only invisible to radar, but also to the
unaided human eye. Concomitant progress has been made in the
application of total sound-suppression by means of advanced
noise-cancelling silencers. These specialist machines are deployed in
combat areas, for exclusive use by Allied Special Forces in the pursuit
and capture or killing of enemy insurgents. Anecdotal evidence exists
of a burgeoning folkloric tradition, among the Pashtun tribes of
Afghanistan, of the Swift Silent Sitters. These are strange ghostly
figures, who appear to move around the country at will and at great
speed, sitting down 'on nothing', carrying out their missions and
vanishing equally rapidly. It is assumed that these soldiers are riding
the legendary Spagthorpe.

Several Spagthorpes are understood to have been acquired by wealthy
collectors, however, having been 'liberated' from military control by
unscrupulous returning soldiers and sold for huge sums. Inevitably,
given the nature of the vehicles, it is almost impossible for them to be
tracked and retrieved. More investigative work is urgently required
about the modern Spagthorpes, so your journalistic name would be made by
visiting Helmand Province forthwith and making further enquiries among
the populace.

Bollocks. I've almost never used the term "motorcycle", and almost
always "motorbike", or just "bike" of course.

I am still trying (without success) to make sense out of your posting.

Say for the sake of argument that the 2010 Suzuki V-Strom DL650
is the perfect bike for you in every respect... except that the 2009
DL650 is virtually identical... so the 2010 isn't really a "new"
model...(?)...so you won't buy one...(???)

Then I would suggest the Honda VT750RS, where "RS" stands for
"resembles a Sportster" -- or "retro standard" (take your pick).

It's a "new model", ie nothing exactly like it has ever been
on the market since the Big Bang, although it's still a Honda Shadow,
so maybe it really isn't a new model. You decide.

As per usual with these ukrm fellas, there is an ironic double whoosh
going on here, one that the would-be whoosher is himself totally
unaware of.

It is to laugh.

Would someone please translate "Whoooossh" into the Queen's English?

(Or did the Queen herself use this word on appropriate occasions,
such as Princess Diana's 1995 BBC Panorama interview -- in that case,
what would be the closest North American equivalent?)

Could be, although there are other possible explanations, such as that
he/she is lurking out there somewhere trying to make a buying decision.

I think I've figured out what this "new model" business is all about.

He's looking for a military bike from Oliver Cromwell's armed forces,
which was called the New Model Army.

In the US we generally reserve the word "motorbike" for things that
have both pedals *and* an engine; as in, "My first motorbike was a
metallic-green postwar Sachs".

And it was, too.

Lived in California most of my life, and I never hear anybody around
here use the term motorbike. If it has an engine and no pedals then it's
a motorcycle. If it has an engine and pedals then its a moped.

Oh, you can still buy similar things here, and people do, but they're invariably
Chinese (the mopeds, not the people) and total crap.

FWIW, a so-called moped[2] as defined under the laws of my state[1] does NOT have to
have pedals, most of the 49cc smoker scooters (also Chinese of course) are licensed
as "motorized bicycles".

[1]
Subd. 19.Motorcycle.

"Motorcycle" means every motor vehicle having a seat or saddle for the use of the
rider and designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the
ground, including motor scooters and bicycles with motor attached, other than
those vehicles defined as motorized bicycles in subdivision 20, but excluding a
tractor.

Subd. 20.Motorized bicycle.

[2] "Motorized bicycle" means a bicycle that is propelled by an electric or a
liquid fuel motor of a piston displacement capacity of 50 cubic centimeters or less,
and a maximum of two brake horsepower, which is capable of a maximum speed of not
more than 30 miles per hour on a flat surface with not more than one percent grade
in any direction when the motor is engaged. "Motorized bicycle" includes an
electric-assisted bicycle as defined in section 169.011, subdivision 27.

I live in Los Angeles where it's a lightly used word.

The most fun is referring to the Mille as a motorbike.
