It all started with a post on rmh by RE. "Anyone going to El Jefe's Run
to Ensenada?" I remembered a ride report from last year, it sounded like
a large time was had, so I answered "Why not?"
Better grab a cold one, this could get long. I"ll have a Pacifico, the 20
peso kind, por favor. (After I finished this, I reread it and it's long,
so grab a double on me)
So RE writes back, "Want to get a room together?" Sure, I say, sealing
my doom.
Next, TOPH posts about a party Friday night in Ocean Beach, fittingly
enough called NOB for Netscum of Ocean Beach, to say good-bye to Dave
Nichols and wave hello to RE as he went through. Sounded like a good
time, but I work nights, and this would conflict with work. A dilemma.
But not one that lasted long. "Hey boss, I know I took off last Friday
night to go to a party, I'm doing it again this Friday."
Booked a room at the Ocean Beach (called OB from now on) Motel. A
reasonable price, I think about $70 bucks but could be wrong. I tried to
keep notes like Dave S does but by the time I got home they were a soggy
mess, so there went that idea.
So, Friday morning I wake up at the crack of noon, (Hey, I work nights. I
got off at 3 AM, then had a conference call at 6:30 AM) pack up, start
tying things to the Thunderbird, and head south.
The ride down to OB was nothing spectacular. I left the secret
headquarters near the Anaheim Pond and headed south on CA 57 to I-5 and
continued south, making pretty good time in the car pool lane. The
weather was grey, cloudy and damp, but no rain.
I continued down 5, stopping at the scenic pull-off, where I took a water
break and photographed the local animals, some kind of ground squirrel it
looked like, that were quite friendly if they thought you had food. I
didn't, so they soon grew tired of me and were off to greet fresh meat. I
spoke with a man from England who lived near the factory where my bike was
born. He said he rode a Harley, and had the belt buckle to prove it.
To avoid taking the interstate all the way, I turned off the freeway at La
Jolla Village Drive and headed west to Torrey Pines road. I took that
south until it kind of ran into La Jolla Blvd, which ran into Mission
Blvd. This was a trip along the shoreline, but a couple of blocks off the
beach. It looked like a lot of beach towns, with that kind of slightly
run-down look that towns that bear the brunt of sea-front living get, the
"Maintenance Needed" look that is there always.
From there, I crossed the bridges over Mission Bay and rolled into Ocean
Beach. I stopped at the Shell station and filled up so I'd be ready in
the AM, then found Newport Street and took it to the beach, where I found
the OB Motel.
I pulled in and parked next to a bike with the license plate 'YPF 4' so I
knew Rich Johns had made it, riding his RK instead of his new bike, which
was getting accessorized.
I checked in, saw Rich who had come out to put a cover on his bike, and
stowed my stuff in my "notch above scuzz" room. Actually, it was a couple
of notches above, small, but utile.
Rich and I walked the 3 long blocks east and 1 short block south to get to
TOPH and Krys' house. We knew we were in the right location when we heard
sounds of merriment, and sure enough, someone had left the gate open and a
party broke in.
Steve Reyer was tending the pit, producing some mighty fine ribs and
chicken. Dave Nichols was offering the fruits of his microbrew search,
but first made me sample his Barley Wine, which tasted good, but was of
sufficient power to lay me out if that was all I drank, so I went with the
IPA and the Belgian lager (I think, I'm not a beer connaswer, I like it
cold and plenty). I met Krys and the early arrivals, Nancy the Viking
Princess, Fred and Cindy Reed, and since I don't have my photos in front
of me I don't remember who all else was there.
After some ribs and socializing, Steve and Nancy went to the hospital to
visit Faye, Steve.s wife, who was in the ICU but has since been moved out
of ICU, and meet RE who was there to visit Faye.
Soon the roar of a pair of Bub Reinharts was heard as the red bearded one
pulled up to the party. Somewhere in there TOPH made it home from work,
some other folks showed up, including Steph and RHSD. Sandi brought a
poster for the Roller Derby fundraiser scheduled for the next night, which
RE promptly grabbed and said was going into the Saloon.
As is usual when netscum gather, much merriment ensued, there may have
been a lie or two told, a few chunks of firewood were sacrificed, and the
beer disappeared.
About 11:30, I think, Nancy and I left and walked back to the motel.
After making plans for the morning, I turned in and slept the sleep of the
righteous, or the beer laden, one or the other.

Argh! Now I have to kill you! :-)
Picked up the new Road Glide in all its accessorized glory this
morning. A thing of beauty... a cross-country cruiser for sure.
SunRun, here I come...
Plus, I was actually getting the 1000 mile service done on it as
well... :-).

Great write-up so far. Hurry up and post more! :-)
