Anyone able to make a scan of the Protector overlay please?
I would like a scan of the front and the back - 300dpi png or bmp.
This is so we can make a reproduction overlay.
Many thanks

Hi guys,

Did you get Alex's permission then? The GCE stuff is all fair game now
thank's to Jay, but I think we should respect the copyright of
homebrew's. Alex did a spectacular job on that production, and as a
collector the Protector boxed set is a prized and valuable possession.
I for one would prefer to keep them special. I suspect this might be
one of the reasons for the low numbers of RGV responses, perhaps other
collectors like myself who put a lot of time and money into building
their collections are a little wary of the outputs of this
initiative?

I know Macallan has been selling complete GCE overlay sets for years
now with good quality white backings, and despite the potential for
profit has resisted producing reproduction homebrew overlays. BTW he
could give indications as to what numbers you might sell. I recall one
of the challenges was keeping the postage reasonable as 22 overlays
are quite heavy.

How's about diverting effort into creating original overlays for games
without them? Much of Craig Akers stuff is superb and would benefit
from cool artwork. IMHO it's more satisfying to create original stuff
too and will it leave a richer legacy. I think the overlay created for
Thrust was done by a third party unoffically and that really enhances
the look of the game. (can someone corroborate the origin of that
overlay?)

It's great to see some activity in Vectrexland, so kudos to your
enthusiasm!

Cheers Alex

Richard,

I've taken the yahoo link and it seems Alex had the same concerns:

Pasted from VectrexMad on YAHOO: "He [Alex Herbert] stated that his
only slight concern with making repros of the Protector
overlay is that is was part of a limited edition set and he didn't
want to upset
anyone who paid money for the limited edition."

Since you sold yours a while back, I think I'm allowed to express my
concern. I suspect given the relative silence I'm not alone. Given
that even GCE's Star Castle used to sell for around £85. I think
collectors are taking this rather well. Having said that if the new
repros are all sufficiently discernible then it's a great initiative
and any Vectrex activity is to be commended.

How's about a constructive response about new original non-repro
overlays? Anyone?

Hello Alex,
Yes it’s all being done properly.
Alex has given permission. And in fairness to him he also said the
only worry he had was if the collectors were worried about their
overlays being devalued. However, he did agree that putting an
indication on the overlay to say that they were repro was a solution.
Therefore to make sure overlays LE overlays are not devalued the repro
overlays will be clearly marked to indicate that they are repro
overlays. In fact Alex has even said he will provide the artwork files
if he can find them on his original hard disk.
However, as I know Alex has a thousand and one other things to do and
there is a risk he might not find the original files that is why I
requested if somebody could make a scan. In terms of vectorising the
artwork the Protector overlay is an easier one to make into an overlay
(say compared to Star Castle). It’s more of an issue to get the colour
right and a scan will probably not show the exact colour. If we can’t
get it right we will produce the next most requested overlay which was
YASI.

The idea is to reproduce four overlays type only. These are the top
four that were requested by responses in the survey I carried out –
MineStorm, StarCastle, Protector and PolePosition.

Macallan overlays? – didn’t know that…

Hello Alex,

just saw your other post to Richard ...

Whether we make a Protector repro is in the hands of a collector - if
they make one available for us to look at then we can proceed.
If not, no problem we either make our own version or we take the next
overlay type which is YASI - that will be according to our own
design.

This project is aimed more at Vectrex players rather than Vectrex
collectors. I myself will get more enjoyment from playing the games
with overlays that I have always searched rather than for the sake of
collecting.

>How's about a constructive response about new original non-repro
>overlays? Anyone?

regarding the above, we been through this process with the survey.

p.s. Alex, I have written an article about the life of Spike for the
magazine VGT due September. I did send an email to you to request
permission to reproduce a screen shot of Spike's Circus from your
website. However, I did not get a reply. Can I have permission please?
- acknowledgements will be given.

Sorry I had a period of dormancy and missed it. Yes of course you have
permission to take shots of Spike's Circus. If it helps feel free to
lift any artwork from my website also. If you send me an email to
vectrex@.. I can send you some unique promotional artwork and early
prototype screenshots if they are of interest.
