YAAP: Thag-Bar-Orc-Mal-Law

Yup, LAWFUL orc barbarian, and there's a story behind that. This is
also a consecutive ascension, being the game immediately after my
caveman ascension.

PROLOGUE: [For a description of the character's background, please see

A beautiful day in Azure city ... but for one small problem.

Sabine: "We have a problem, Nale."

Nale: "What's that?"

Sabine: "There's been an accident. There's no more ice cream in the
city. NONE."

Nale: "Yipes! Then that means ...."

Thag: "Oh, lovely sprinkles! Thag hold off boredom-driven rampage only
for you!"

Sabine: "We've got to distract him somehow ..."

Nale: "Not to worry, I have a plan. Thag? I can get you as much ice
cream as you could ever want."

Thag: "Where?"

Nale: "Follow me".

[Four hours later, outside the Mazes of Menace]

Nale: "Somewhere down there, Thag, is the bad, bad man who stole your
ice cream. They call him the Wizard of Yendor."

Thag: THAG SMASH STINKING GIRLY-MAN WIZARD!

Nale: "So all you need to do is go down there, kill the wizard, and
bring me this thing ... looks like this ... *Holds up a cheap, plastic
imitation of the Amulet of Yendor*"

Thag: What that do?

Nale: It will let me give you all the ice cream you ever wanted.

Thag: THAG SMASH WIZARD AND GET AMULET! THAG RESCUE ICE CREAM AND MAKE
WORLD HAPPY PLACE!

And so it was Thag, armed with a battle-axe, a short-sword and an
orcish ring mail, when charging into the Dungeons of Doom ...

Sabine: You know, he hasn't got a chance of getting it.
Nale: I know, but I'm sure he's far too tough to get killed. It'll
serve as a distraction until we can find something else for him to do.
Then we'll get a wizard to bring him out.

*Thag lonely. Thag want puppy. *
*At the entrance to the dungeon, a small kitten mews pathetically*
Pretty Kitty! Not puppy, but ease Thag's lonely heart. Come along!

300 turns pass before Thag kills his first opponent, a sewer rat. But
trouble looms quickly..

"THAG SMASH STINKING ACID BLOB!"
*squelch*
"Hmm.... acid blob no do Thag's axe good at all".

Still, Thag wanders down through the dungeon, relieving a hobbit of his
dwarf cloak and in general continuing his rampage down into the
dungeon, stopping to pick up a bill-guisarme on the way.

turn 1536 -- Oooh! Thag like pretty potion! *Quaff* Hmmm ... Potion
have sting.

Well, yeah, poison can do that to ya. Fortunately, as an orc, Thag
doesn't care.

1671- Thag finds +2 Dwarvish mattock, throws away battle axe. Uses
Mattock clear down to castle.


5056 - hostile uruk-hai donate orc-bow, poisoned orcish arrows, spare
boots, a helmet, and a shield.
The shield and boots go into a cache, keep the rest. AC -1

5273 - shoot nymph with poisoned arrows. On third arrow the poison is
deadly.

"Thag like poisoned arrows!"

4560 - on way down past Oracle. Thag sees bones pile on Oracle level,
with "Excalibur" in the pile. Of course, Thag isn't lawful, so Thag
doesn't care. He walks past it. The character, Bag, was a lawful
cave-dwarf that had been butted to death by a mumak, a gargoyle, and a
black unicorn.

Lead gargoyle on merry chase around Oracle, using up
almost all arrows before finishing the job in hand-to-hand with
mattock. Now a mumak to tackle.
Sphere exploded earlier. Kill eye with one hit, if it had paralyzed
Thag the mumak would have
got him for sure! Thag begins to wonder about miracles. Gather arrows
and prepare to shoot mumak.
5889 - poison is deadly to mumak. Goodnight, sweet Dumbo. .

Thag remembers that, when thag was just a little orc, pretty lady
appear to him and tell him, if he ever has trouble, to write a certain
name on the ground. It starts with "E". But whenever Thag does it, Thag
sense anger in the air ... as if something wasn't happy with him when
he did it. Thag has int 8, so Thag doesn't care much.

7187 - while chasing leprechaun, get sucked into treasure zoo. Panther
and kitten knock me down to
21/86. Engrave "E" in dust. Kitten killed by dog, trade places and
begin to heal up. begin to
stab at animals over dog with bill-guisarme. Kill panther and paper
golem this way. an acid blob sidles
up, but Thag ignores it, because its attack is passive only. Dog leave
his position, Thag kill several
creatures and get knocked down to 10 hp by stalker. Kill it. Engrave E
and rest up.
Interesting: I don't seem to smudge "E" when I apply polearm from
distance or fire wand. Hurt tiger
several times this way, but he still flees from unsmudged elbereth.
Thag eventually takes him down with
2 shots of wand of striking. troll knocks Thag down to 4 hp. Pray. Get
all my hp back. Kill troll hand-to-hand
and eat him. Knocked down to 68/86. Now all I have to worry about is
the Leocrotta and the cube!
kill cube with polearm and eat it, gaining cold resistance. cornered
by acid blob, kick it and corrode
iron shoes. kill it with bear hands. Recover all hp - 86. replace
shoes with others on level.
7677 - hunt down leprechaun that caused the trouble and kill him.
7789 - after much "E" wording, throwing of daggers and shooting of
poisoned arrows, kill Leocrotta.
treasure zoo fully cleared. reach experience level 10.

"E" has saved Thag's life. But Thag is still troubled. "Orcs don't use
E-word!" He has heard some say. "Orcs hate E-word!" But E-word not
hurt Thag. E-word save Thag's life. Thag wonder what to do.

11443 - sokoban cleared. Bag of holding acquired.

Thag lose kitty, not sure how. Thag tame puppy, name him Biter! Thag
living dream. Thag love puppy, but orc-captain kill puppy. Thag mad
with orc-captain, cut orc-captain to little pieces and feed to new
puppy, named Gnawer. Gnawer touches Thag's lonely heart.

12736 - water prayer. find bless armor scroll. Armor now -2.
find ring of poly control. That will prove useful. Thag wears it always
for
protection against polymorph traps. Wouldn't you know, he doesn't find
one until past the castle.

14050 - find lots of arrows that I will use from arrow traps. I no
longer need daggers, so I stash them.

15812 - move to mines dlvl 7. Find bones of lawful caveman here, and a
live leocrotta which killed said caveman.
15846 - kill leocrotta hand-to-hand. Thag finds amulet of reflection in
bones! Thag happy.

18783 - eat tengu, become very jumpy. Teleportitis. Teleportitis annoy
Thag intensely.

20016 - Thag rampages to bottom of Gnomish minesluckstone acquired.
20371 - Gnawer eats a chameleon corpse and becomes a sasquatch. Thag
happy with big pet.

21253 - discard polearm because Thag never get better with it in many,
many turns.

21342 - accidentally wield cursed arrow.Use last of holy water to get
rid of
weapon.
21431 - put on cursed ruby ring. Thag thought it was uncursed. Dry up 4
fountains trying to get it off
23354 - water prayer. Uncurses ruby ring.

25275 - Mumak takes off 40 hp with one hit. Stand off and finish it
with arrows.

25403 - enter treasure zoo. Throw apple to warhorse and get it on my
side. Intend to leave it on this level,
but it gets killed.
Knocked down to 55/107 hp, but clear zoo. Finish cockatrice with
arrows.

26592 - convert altar to chaotic on level 14. Find wand of make
invisible. Thag shoots himself with it. "Oooh! Thag see through self!
Thag's vision became clear from throne earlier!"

27457 - Gnawer gets killed by frost giant on quest level.

31919 - identify ring of regeneration

36828 - clearing Fort Ludios
kill first lich , brought in by soldier. use dwarvish mattock while
standing on "E".

Again, Elbereth saves Thag's life, or at least his armor.

37823 - Fort Ludios: use arrows to kill eels. Running a bit low on
arrows.

37906 - freeze moat. Animals pursue, Thag steps off of ice and
fights them. Croesus comes after Thag. Thag knows Croesus is tough,
and Thag has gained about 3 points of
wisdom during his trip, plus a lot of experience. Thag decides to use
a wand of polymorph on him. He turns into
a gnome mummy, which Thag smashes with one shot from his mattock. Heh
heh.

38798 - encounter demilich on level 22. Back off, pull out wand of
lightning. Get teleported.
Come around, find him again. Engrave with wand of lightning, hit him
until he runs away.
Then Thag starts shooting him with arrows. Continue to run back to
square, shoot him some more,
eventually he crumbles to dust.

For a third time, "E" saves his life.

40861 - encounter lich on level 24. Simply beat him to death with
mattock. He hits Thag with a psibolt
but nothing else.

Thag ready for Xykon now. Xykown wuss. Already Thag kill 2 liches and a
demilich.

42083 - Thag arrives on level 25, Medusa level. A great big Titan
stands nearby.
Thag instantly engraves "E".
The titan brings in swarm after swarm of monsters, including 3 master
mind flayers, black dragons, and minotaurs.
Standing on "E" thag is safe ... which is good considering what a MMF
could do to a character with 8 Int! Minotaurs hit hard,
and Thag runs away upstairs, where ring of regeneration heals him.
Then back down to fight some more, taking every chance
to shoot arrows at Titan. Eventually Titan levitates out a door, over
water, and around the north side of the building, away from
Thag.

That leaves thag with a swarm of monsters. But with the power of "E"
Thag kills them all, eating a black dragon to gain disintegration
resistance.

Not sure what to do next, Thag goes back upstairs to look for stuff
that might be useful in fighting the Titan.

43789 - blessed identifies reveal uncursed scroll of genocide, cursed
ring of free action,
, uncursed boots of speed, cursed boots of levitation. Use water to
uncurse ring, boots. Genocide master mind flayers.

44543 - return to Medusa level.

Thag thinks ... what can Thag do in one turn that will stop Titan from
bringing in monsters?
Thag looks at inventory .. wands of striking ... wands of missile ..
ah-ha! Thag have idea!

Thag put on boots of levitation and goes out over water after the
Titan. The Titan, carrying two huge boulders, comes after
Thag. As he gets close Thag pulls out his wand of polymorph and fires
twice!

The Titan shudders, twitches for a second, then disappears with a loud
"pop", to be replaced by a sewer rat.
The sewer rat can't carry the boulders. The fall into the water with a
loud splash. The rat follows them a second later.

The rat can't swim. The rat drowns, sqeaking horribly. Thag is overcome
by a fit of the giggles.

44919 - slay medusa with mirror. pick-axe the rest to bits.

45123 - find castle level (level 26, right below Medusa). go back up
for bugle.

45815 - kill rust monster, 2 invisible golden naga, disenchanter,
invisible lich,
2 invisible demilich with drawbridge. Thag having fun!

46224 - trap nurse alone with Thag on my side of the drawbridge. Thag
chase pretty nurse, but pretty nurse run away.
Get 12 hp.
46262 - crush last lich with drawbridge.
46392 - soldier has wand of death, zaps it twice, killing himself. Thag
moves in and picks it up.

46907 - wand of wishing has two charges. wish for two scrolls of
charging and a +2 gray dragon scale
mail. AC -10. re-charge with 1 scroll, wish for blessed magic marker.

At some point Thag also gets ring of teleport control, solving
Teleportitis problems.

46976 - genocide mind flayers.
47208 - write 2 blessed scrolls of genocide, genocide L and ;
to do: genocide lich, complete the quest.
47662- step through quest portal and find a horde of ogres.
47850 - defeat ogres, two trolls and a giant. Receive quest to slay
Thoth-Amon and recover the Heart of Ahriman. throne on quest level
yields nothing.

48949 - below oasis, a troll has a wand of death. too bad Thag is
wearing an
amulet of reflection. He is killed by his own death ray. Poetic
justice.

50103 - wander around to Thoth Amon. Zap him with wand of death. he
dies with one shot.

Thag moves in and picks up Heart of Ahriman. The Heart of Ahriman
overwhelms Thag, and for many minutes Thag sits, stunned, lost in
vision and dreams as his mind is opened to the Fates.

He sees, at last, who the figure in white really is.

He sees, at last, what the Darkness is.

He sees that he cannot do them both ... he must make a choice. Between
them.

Thag like breaking things.

But Thag not want hurt friends. Thag want friends go out together for
ice cream.

Thag realize Thag must choose.

Breaking things?

Or going out for ice cream?

Thag thinks long and hard ... then notices (and what a stunning -- nay,
miraculous, in the literal sense -- coincidence this was) -- a black
unicorn on the same level as Thoth-Amon's altar.

Thoth-Amon's lawful altar.

Thag sees the choice laid before him .. and makes it.

First, because Thag has a wisdom point or two now AND experience, Thag
takes everything out of the Quest so it doesn't get lost.

Then Thag comes back and carefully herds black unicorn over to altar.

Black unicorn surprised when Thag's mattock bites into her side. She
neighs, but Thag does the bloody job quickly and efficiently. Thag
takes carcass and lays it on lawful altar. "Thag no want that any more.
Thag ready for something new."

A white light surrounds Thag. The Darkness is angry. The Darkness
strips it's protection from him. Thag feels it's anger. Then .. .a
gentle voice. A kind touch.

"I accept your service".

Thag happy, because Thag find something better than puppies.

Thag still has god-anger problems, though. No problem! Here on bottom
of quest level, Thag know where there be lots of hostile trolls just
waiting to go on the altar! And so they do .... all but one.

One troll falls in pit. Thag, acting on prompting of new god , puts up
his mattock and pulls the troll out. The troll is grateful. Thag feels
strong urge not to kill life he has just saved. Thag names troll
"Bill".

52500 - Thag discovers new god doesn't like it when Thag uses poisoned
arrows, so Thag puts them in chest and leaves them there, sticking with
normal arrows thereafter.

52988 -- Thag comes back to Oracle level, and sees Excalibur on Bag's
grave. Acting on that gentle pressure he's coming to know, he takes the
sword and uncurses it, wielding it himself.

He almost swears he hears, for a moment ... "go with my blessing, and
bear it to better fortune than I did".

53281 - give 60000+ gold to lawful priest in minetown. AC now -16.


53508 Thag having sacfest in minetown with lawful altar and priest. All
going well, but none --absolutely no -- artifacts from sacrifices.
Then Thag puts hobgoblin on the altar.

The priest gets angry!

Thag feel divine anger. Thag puzzled. "New god not like
orc-sacrifice?"

"NO. YOU ARE AN ORC. YOU CANNOT SACRIFICE THE SAME RACE"

Thag lose all protection and have angry god. Thag chased out of temple
by angry priest. Finds his way to another lawful alter on level 5
where a black unicorn sacrifice and a few others allow him to
reconcile, but his luck has been re-set to zero. It will take time to
build it back up.

54185 - find elf-lord with 3rd wand of death. he fires two shots before

dying.

55572 - find 3rd bones stash in Valley of the Dead. It is a strange
place, for on this journey it is near totally empty.

Thag remembers the story ... how a brave cave-dwarf had made it down
this far, cleared the level, but foolishly stopped to read a book, was
paralyzed, and turned to stone by a cockatrice while helpless. Thag
know better than to read (except for one time -- but that was awhile
ago, and now whenever Thag thinks about it his head spins).

Thag looks around .. and sure enough, Thag finds the very statue. Thag
breaks it down, seeking to release the spirit inside to a better place.
And in the rubble he finds ...

-- the +3 Grayswandir
cursed +4 silver dragon scale mail (being worn)
cursed rustproof +5 helm of brilliance (being worn)
cursed fireproof cloak of magic resistance (being worn)
blessed fireproof +4 Hawaiian shirt (being worn)

a magic marker
2 wands of death

AND a wand of wishing with 3 charges left.

Thag sit down and weep for joy. Thag wasn't sure how he was going to
explore Gehennom, since his AC was pathetically high, after he'd lost
his protection the second time with no money to buy it back, but this
equipment (once uncursed) will give him an AC of -24, making a trip
further down possible. And FIVE wands of death! Clearly, Someone is
looking out for Thag.

Also, with a +5 helm of brilliance Thag now has int of 13, and is able
to think clearly.

Incidentally, these are the ONLY artifacts -- Grayswandir and Excalibur
-- Thag sees throughout the game, and Thag never gets another wish
except what he gets through the wands.

57544 - fall through trap door to level 33, use cursed scroll of
teleport to return to level 29 and re-descend.
58431 - Asmodeus bought off for 43 zorkmids.
58827 - kill Juiblex with two-weaponed Grayswandir and silver sword
while standing on top of "E".
Use Bugle to get his attention, when he warps in, beat him to death.

59652 - the traps on level 32 seem worse for the bad guys then for
Thag. Thag continuously hears the
rumble of the rolling boulder trap as it smacks helpless monsters and
Thag encountered an orc that
was polymorphed into a kobold shaman.

61537 - nurse dance with 2 nurses on Baalzebub level. 1 leaves
immediately but the other gives me 50
hp, for a total of 54 hp gain. 1600 turns of dance. during this time
a white dragon breathes at me
6 or so times but can't close because of "E", and my amulet of
reflection turns the breath.
61747 - ambushed by black dragon with disintegration. Aor saves the day
again.
62104 -Baalzebub bought off for 34 gold.

66264 - shoot chickatrice with arrows and go up to examine. Fall into
pit. Fortunately, no corpse
was left. Had there been, it would have been an instadeath. Lesson
learned. Where ring of
levitation when checking chickatrice in new territory to avoid being
killed just that way.

69147 - enter orcus level. A nalfashnee proves troublesome as he brings
in many monsters, but
Thag wounds him with silver arrows and finish with excalibur/silver
saber combo. He leaves a nurse behind,
whom Thag proceeds to milk.
69341 - nurse vanishes, having donated 20 hp.
69826 - attack orcus. He teleports away even as Thag breaks a potion
of paralysis over his head. He teleports away. Thag
use cursed teleport scroll to teleport to the level above, then come
down on him. Engrave "E" with wand of fire,
then stand on stairs. Orcus fires death twice, then closes to melee and
Thag kills him with 2 whacks from
Grayswandir and +3 silver saber.

70148 - begin moving cache from level 41 to level 42. This nearly gets
Thag killed, as he moves very slowly
with the box and he gets hit by a disenchanter, seduced by a succubus,
and nearly beat to death by
a bunch of other things -- down to 136 / 284 hp and lose 1 point of AC
from his shirt, exposed since
the succubus undressed him. Nonetheless, he gets another experience
level out of it.
There are two nurses here. Thag locks one in a room and allows her to
minister to him. She steps in a sleep
trap, so he slaps her barehanded to wake her up. She does. other one
insists on doing work in the middle
of the street. Thag embarrased, but Thag finally co-operates.

71097 - finish dance. 28 hp gained. New HP 312.

74479 - locate vibrating square on level 46. mark spot with dry oil
lamp and "E".
75290 - declare dungeon fully explored.

77184 - Vlad slain, candelabrum taken. electric shock from throne.

79450 - water prayer. Thag receives the greatest surprise of his life.
"I crown thee .. the Hand of Elbereth!"

Thag, the orc, the outcast, scorned by his kin, for whom the name is a
curse, is the very Hand of Elbereth. And the hand .. is an orc. Thag
is overcome with the magnanimity of this gesture.

79702 - Thag has much gold. There is a friendly chaotic priest on level
18 -- but Thag has no interest. Thag doesn't think it right to go
begging to his old master .. he will take protection from the new one,
or not at all. But the only lawful priest is the one in minetown, who
is still very angry ...

Thag thinks for a day, but then it comes to him.

Thag thinks of his buddy not-Nale the bard. And he remembers what that
happy, jolly person would do in this situation.

So Thag burns a wish from his wand of wishing for a blessed magic harp.


He goes into minetown. The priest is there, and he charges with his
mace.

Thag pulls out the harp and sings ... "Calm, calm, calm the angry
priest!"

Thag have no musical talent. The priest hits him, then kick him, then
summons insects around him.

"Calm, calm, calm the angry priest!"

The insects stop attacking and begin to cozy up protectively to Thag.
The music has affected THEM, if not the priest, and they fawn on their
new frame. But the priest only screams and charges some more.

"Calm, calm, calm the angry priest!"

"ALL RIGHT!" The priest throws down his mace. "I'm calm! I'm calm!
Anything! But just stop playing that gosh-awful racket! Please, I can't
take it anymore."

"Thag happy. Thag have something for priest."

"Whatever. What the HELL do you want."

"To give you lots and lots of gold".

And that is how Thag pacified the minetown priest, gave him almost all
his gold, and gained back 6 points of protection, giving him a final AC
of -36.

Thag gets ready for assent. Thag knows about the riders, thanks to the
vision of the Heart of Ahriman, and thanks to his +5 helm of brilliance
he's thinking ahead. He knows how to deal with famine and pestilence --
he DOES have 5 wands of death -- but what about death himself?

Then, Thag has it. Thag blesses up his orcish bow to +5, and blesses up
a stash of arrows to go with it to +5. He expects to use the +5 arrows
to shoot death from a distance. He begins his descent, drinking 3
potions of gain level to reach Chieftain - level 27. He leaves
Excalibur in the castle, carrying Grayswandir and a +3 silver saber.

82325 - begin final descent.
82679 - kick in Rodney's door. he dies with the first death beam.
82905 - invocation ritual. monsters suddenly appear from nowhere. Use
wand of secret door detection to find entrance of Santum.

83168 - kill high priest and acquire amulet.

83889 - kicked back 1 level again, to level 38. Rodney shows up. 2
shots knock him down. So far have suffered through 1 black glow and
been kicked downstairs some 10 times, 4 times 2 levels and 1 time 3
levels. Thag encounters heavy resistance, as the RNG will not let him
up to level 34 *no matter what*.

84264 - reach level 34 for first time.
84308 - rodney shows up 3rd time level 34. 2 shots put him down.

84724 - finally escape to the castle and towards the castle cache,
where Thag intends to replenish his food and holy water supply.

But ... between this end and the cache (smack at the corridor
entrance), a hill giant wanders the hall, trapped between two trap
doors.

Thag thinks about it .. then zaps the giant with a wand of teleport,
moving him out of the way. But when he looks, he sees that he
teleported his chest cache as well! In the distance he hears a crashing
sound, probably indicating that his chest has fallen into something and
may even be on the next level. So much for additional food and water
... Thag continues his journey up to the surface, using only his
current stash.

84911 - grab 13 more c-rats from level 18. that cache is now empty of
c-rations.

85189 - reach level 5. Potion of gain level allows me to reach level 30
- Conqueror.
85308 - escape dungeon. Rodney appears. dies with one shot.
85406 - escape plane of air. Wands of teleport, ring of conflict prove
useful on air.
85441 - enter plane of water.
85939 - arrive astral.

See a rider appear through the center door, and shoot him with the wand
of death. He doesn't fall. Thag shoots him again. And again. And again.
Still he doesn't fall. Thag squints and looks more closely at the
rider, and realizes he's just shot death three times or more with a
wand of death!

Oops. That means death will be 3 or 4 times his normal strength.

Thag runs ...right. Pestilence is waiting for him. The wand of death
works on him, and Thag rushes through him to discover that the right
altar is chaotic. No good. Goes up center, and shoots at Death with +5
arrows, but is boxed in by monsters
and is ofrced into a hand-to-hand battle. Death drains him of 30 hp but
Thag beats him and goes up the middle. Neutral.

Come back out, again boxed in. Again, kill Death hand-to-hand and lose
another 30 hp permanently. Silver saber gets cursed, have to waste time
uncursing and two-weaponing it again.

Noted: AC -36 isn't that bad. Death actually missed a few times.

Go left towards famine to find the towel Thag was wearing as a
blindfold is cursed. Take some time to uncurse it.

Famine takes 2 shots to go down. Evade other monsters to left --
lawful -- correct -- altar.

86152 - YAAP.

Cheers for that - I thoroughly enjoyed following Thag's adventures (you've
got him down pat, alright!) all the more so 'coz of the character
development too.

(It's a funny thing, but I clicked to load rec.games.roguelike.nethack in
XNews, and then skipped to browse the web while I was waiting - the last
thing I looked at before swapping back was the lastest Order of the Stick,
which features our hero wanting to be part of a group hug and getting held
up...and then the first post I read in rgrn was yours!

...me think maybe Thag learn sorcery?)

can assure you that the details he published (and for which he most
generously reciprocated in the matter of liquid refreshment and a snug
and cozy nest where one could rest assured that Ga Binetto and the rest
