Ok, so i'm wandering aroung the overworld next to bree, waiting for some ?
oTeleport to show up in the shops (just lost em in orc-town because i hit
a 'scatter items' trap and was then starving). I end up flying over a
water square (just got some red DSM of defense 30+31 =). I'm ambushed.
It's night. I move south one square. Something screams 'DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!'
(or something to that effect) once or twice. I do.

I'm really starting to have serious quesitons about permanent death
without so much as an amulet-of-life-saving in a game that takes as much
time as this. But the problem here is something else... I don't have much
of a problem dying if i have some clue i'm actually taking a risk. Walking
5-7 squares from bree is -NOT- an obvious risk for a level 24 character
that's on the ~18th level of the orc cave. I look up what killed me in the
spoiler on t-o-m-e.com, and it's this:

The Lesser kraken 54 2 +10 440 150 L.Green '~'

So we have a monster native to level 54 (about as deep as i've EVER been
in V, with WAY better equipment and 15 more levels), six steps away from
the newbie town? The highest level dungeon in this area goes to the
thirtys, maybe, iirc. There's just something wrong here.

Uhm, we have potions of life blood, and gods.

Water squares are bad.
Ambushs are more bad.

Ah, I wasn't thinking... or I was thinking about the Angband games as a
whole I guess. Of course, my character's agnostic for a silly reason,
but... what is this 'potion of life blood'... never heard of it before.

Hm... I still think that maybe in a ten or fifteen square radius of
bree, things should be a little less powerful than that (or at least
restricted to non-casting normal speed enemies, so we can get the pants
scared off w/o a guarenteed death...).

How bad are ambushes in general though, this was the first one i've had.
Am I likely to get accosted by level 30+ stuff on the way to the orc
cave and back if i'm unlucky...

Which reminds me... I had 'unlucky' in my list when I had a potion of
enlightenment... what's that about? =)

it's a rare drink. after quaffing it a dead character wil be resurrected.

>

it's means bad luck. this will influence your chances of finding certain
items, such as ego items and artifacts. it also influences your chances
of hitting a monster and a monster's chances of hitting you.
luck is determined somewhere during character generation. some races are
unlucky, some are lucky, especially hobbits. luck may be modified by
equipment, items like the phial of galadriel come to mind. the phial of
undeath will decrease your luck.........

Better formulated: after drinking it, a character will be resurrected
one time when getting killed.

Well, don't hit < if you don't want to risk an ambush. Getting to travel
with < is a tradeoff. Waiting around for shops to replenish is no reason
to hit <.

If you never hit < you will never be ambushed. Simple.

Hm. It'd be really really really hard to find even the orc cave without
using it, but I see your point. I'm used to e.g. UnrealWorld, and
constantly forget that you can move around like that.

I believe I can answer that, having just written a spoiler luck help file.

All characters start off with a certain amount of luck. Some combinations
are unluckier than others. The worst combinations for luck are Petty
Dwarf/DeathMold/Yeek Vampire/Zombie. What was your character?

There are almost two dozen artifacts which can improve your luck, as well as
particular type of cloak.

If there is anything else you need to know, ask me.

Cheers,
ChrisH

Yes. As it stood, it sounded about as useful as an activation for cure
paralyzation.

Hm, where can I get this and are there spoilers for TOME not on the TOME
site? =)

I heard the phial, which would have been glued to my head if I ever
found it (I always have a hard time going to e.g. an arkenstone or other
better light arti because I use the light activation in every single
room (in V at least, only one where I got ym... the star i think. had to
start carring rods of light then) )

Is it randomized on generation? If so, would 'quick starting' to get the
same character roles (I don't really want to roll a 86+ Social w/ 18/10
Int and at least onf of STR/DEX again...), give the same exact luck
rating?

Heh. Anyway, so it's like Life-2 in some of the final fantasies. (Rez if
killed). I'm assuming it never wears out... if you drink two do you get
two 'extra lives'? Do you get rez'd in place or does it recall you too?

This was just what I was thinking of about 'second chances', I like it.
(Whew, no need to become religious.)

promising than death mold with the luck thing...

Not true. There is a certain quest that you take, that even if you
don't walk the overworld map, you will get ambushed.

Second - To avoid dangerous ambushes, don't walk on deep water
squares, and don't walk on Morder's entrance (On the overworld map).
All other ambushes should be pretty easy (Except the one of that
particular quest)

Correct.

I think its a binary thing.

Like with cheating death - you stay on the level, but it gets
re-generated.

That's a special case, and you're warned of that in advance, so it's not
quite the same kind of ambush.

If Mincom has not blocked my access to FreeWebz I can get it up there today.
I hope within the next few days to get it into the CVS.

Plain half-elf starts with 0 luck.

Yes, that's one of them :)

As Andreas mentioned, it is static.
