Hi doosher,

The COW (former BRM) development team proudly presents:

Client Of Win (COW)

the best Netrek client you ever had :) COW has more useful features than any
other client
with a speed comparable to the fastest clients available.

Since Chalmers is down, Sources and binaries of the first official COW release
are available on

ftp.risc.uni-linz.ac.at:/pub/netrek/cow

New key features:

Major improvements in speed (comparable with BRMH and COWl),
Sound with external Soundplayer (COW-Sound package) on all platforms
with precompiled soundplayers for Linux (snd-util 2.0) and SUN,
Hockey Lines on tactical map,
Rabbit ears, xtrekrc and documentation window and other COWl features,
Shell escape tool for executing Unix comands via messages,
Increased SB stats (needs server support),
and much more.

Give it a try get the client and have fun.

Presumably it's intended for players too brain-dead to learn about
window managers. Or machines too brain-dead to let the client coexist
gracefully with the installed window managers.

Of course, if it accepts commands from messages and is poorly coded,
then nasty server gods could... nah. They wouldn't do that, would they?

Well, my amiga netrek client port DNetrek works pretty much exactly as you
describe. I never got around to fixing UDP for it, but anyway, it replaced
most of the socket calls with equivalent calls to route through DNet's
socket-like communication channels. I haven't looked much at term yet, but
the change should be pretty similar.

I was kind of thinking that Netrek needs better upgrades.

One such upgrade: After obtaining 25 kills, you can refit into a BB and
obtain the Power Word Kill spell. Now you can simply send an individual
message to a character saying 'DIE!', and that shit will instantly blow up.

Maybe I'll just give this ability to my special friends.

Who wants to be my friend when I get this server working?

Simple answer: NO. Go hack the client yourself to make it work with
term is my answer. This is not only true for Linux, but also
386BSD, NetBSD, FreeBSD, etc etc (anything that runs term).

Anyone else who has this problem should look at the blurb I wrote up
a while back at: soda.berkeley.edu: /pub/netrek/linux

It also has the NO-PING client which kinda helps but doesn't solve the
problem.

.xtrekrc file for you (ie saving window pos, and options). I assume this
does note exist (I havn't found a way as of yet).

I like this idea. It took me ages just to modify my .xtrekrc so that
I had a phasor window and a set of enlarged message windows.

Better solution - get slip, or even better, cslip or PPP working. Then you can

EVERYONE I've ever known who's written their own borg (as opposed to a
borg for public consumption) has included such a "feature". Of course,
the smart ones don't make it obvious to the victim that their ship is
hosed. The victim just seems to fire wobblier torp spreads at crucial
moments, turns and accelerates a little slower, can't quite seem to hold
phaser lock, etc. Heheheh. That way you can have HOURS of fun, rather
than a few minutes. The trick is to make the change temporary, and just
send the message when the victim is in multi-ship combat. When he
eventually works out that something is wrong, he'll go find a twink to
beat up on one-on-one. But hey presto, his borg is back to its normal
self. "K00l", he thinks, "I must have been imajin.. immagi.. whatever",
and trots back to combat like an eager puppy. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Yeah, URL's are a bitch when you're trying to do nice sig formatting.
I'm still not satisfied with this:

If you have WAIS, use the netrek-ftp db on port 6000 of gourd.srv.cs.cmu.edu.
If you have a WWW client, go to wais://gourd.srv.cs.cmu.edu:6000/netrek-ftp.
If you have AFS, look in /afs/cs.cmu.edu/user/jch/netrek. Otherwise, you're

Sure, there are plenty of sources to Netrek clients available for free.
EVERYthing is available for free. :)

The problem with term is that it's only a half-assed partial solution to a
problem.

I tried playing around with this, and I believe it might be possible, but
it's a lot of work.

At this point, I was kind of waiting for the Mac people to release their
modem client, and hoping somebody my take a look at making that work for
Linux.

The thing I hate about my Linux is that for some stupid reason whenever I
try to get an Info window on a player, or even if I hit 'U' to get rank
information, the client core dumps.

I guess this isn't important, as I'm strictly using this at home to test
server thingies, but it's still annoying.

The main purpose of this feature is to check your system, kill some jobs. It's
really great
if you play without window manager. And don't be afraid, it can not be used
with
messages from the server ;)

>>#God, Now I've seen everything. When are you guys going to add editor

That's already in: You can reload and change the xtrekrc on the fly
(also with macros for ship dependend keymaps :)

>> Hmmm. I for one, would like to see a Newsreader and a

A mail reader is already in if you are usind mh. There you have shell comands
like
inc, show, next, ... for reading mails. I always check incoming mail within the
client
while playing. It's really cool, you should try that :)

>if you have time to actually run a command from your netrek client,

Of corse it works with macros :) For example the line:

mac.^l.!: who;uptime

will show you the users currently logged in and the load of your workstation if
you
press the ctrl l key. Maybe I forgot to mention, that macros, distress
definitions as well
as the buttonmap will support ctrl keys, too.

Sorry to disapoint you, it's not possible to send an shell comand to any person
at all.
It works in the way like the rename of the xtrekrc stuff does.

You have to send a message to "!" as DESTINATION not as part of the message. All
this
shell comands will be handled without any interaction with the server.

Belive me it is secure and you can also use it if the connection to the server
is broken.

Not really. I have this same problem. RSA uses the server name somehow,
and the esrver name you give it (local system with port number using
tredir) isn't what the server really is.. Thus, RSA never works. This
keeps me from playing on any of the Bronco sites. Even with COW or
COWLite, they are RSA only servers, so I'm trapped playing Paradise. I
like Paradise more, but Bronco has short packets, and less information to
send than Paradise, I think. Thus, Bronco may be more playable over term,
but I can't try it at all. :(

Term has UDP on it's todo list, and I've asked the author about it. There
is some new program 'slap', not out yet though, and it's supposed to
handle UDP, in a way somewhat similar to term.

I wish someone would write something like the MacNetrek client for unix. I
have a 9600bps seriel link, but with term and TCP/IP it's
really slow. All I need to do is send Netrek info... Grr...

anyone who can't get in to calvin, send me your login & machine id

What is "How to Modify Clients"?
Does my sig below help?

I prefer the definition of a machine which has been upgraded with the
human-brain chip, or in different words, a human whose body has been
replaced by a machine. Many authors also call andriods and humans sans
brains to be cyborgs. Some even say that a human with very minor additions
to the body, such as an advanced prosthetic limb, is a cyborg.

What has given you this impression? ;-)

What is the ftp-list for?

- Jeff (Alex Trebec)

I run a Netrek WWW site, something like the following command should connect:
%mosaic http://obsidian.math.arizona.edu:8080/netrek.html

For NCSA Mosaic binaries: ftp ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu:/Web/
For text terminals, get Lynx: ftp ftp2.cc.ukans.edu:/pub/WWW/lynx/

Programming in netrek is passe. Now we program in netrek++, which
lets us use ANNOYING MACROS.

>2. What is a cyborg?

No, the correct question is "Who is Sy Borg?" Remember, he's not only
the president of the Netrek Club for Men, he's also a client, and a server!

There are no "good old boys" left. They are either retired or died in
the Northridge earthquake.

>4. Besides the faq list, is ther any documentation on the game itself?

Yes, but it's encrypted and i can't figure out how to crack RSA. Has
anyone cracked RSA, or know someone who has?

My favorite was
"I read the arrticle in Wired, and I think I'd be good at the game.
Can someone tell me the site to telnet to?"

And then someone gave the mtrek site :-) (indial.whatever. still
haven't checked it out myself)

there in ages. (netrek.icaen that is, not the paradise server)

Well, i'd personally suggest going to the bookstore and purchasing the netrek++
programmer's guide (Netrek++ is the next step above just plain Netrek, object
oriented and all). That is if you are serious about programming in Netrek.

> 2. What is a cyborg?

Some annoying plot twist in StarTrek (Note: Netrek IS NOT STARTREK)

no, there is an ftp site: gs69.something.or.other.cmu.edu

LOTS! TONS! go to the ftp site.

BTW, I suggest a Paradise Client for playing; ftp to:

ftp.cis.ufl.edu:/pub/netrek.paradise/ntparadise.*.gz

In comp.lang.netrek. You could also read the definitive work, which
may be available at your local college bookstore:

_N_, Kernighan, Brian; Ritchie, Dennis; Holub, Thomas. University
of West Trenton, NJ. 188 pp., 40 color plates. ISDN 867-53-09123aa.

>2. What is a cyborg?

A large shaggy horned bovine normally found in the appalachians or
in certain climes of the desert southwest. Just like it says in
your dictionary.

not a chan'ce. We always welcome new player's, especially if they
have grammatical skill's.

>4. Besides the faq list, is ther any documentation on the game itself?

As it says in the FAQ list, there are several places where additional
documentation is available. None quite compare to actually playing
the game.

That'd be gs69.sp.cs.cmu.edu, Bob.

I sent the guy e-mail as well, but haven't heard anything since. Looks
like he entered with an attitude and is leaving with one too.

Thank you 5150 for responding

What about the .xtrekrc file what can you do in there that will work with RSA

Thanks Joe. What got me on this was that I was playing at calvin.ecu.usc when
a player named "smack..." put up a long and elaborte multi linemessage that simulated a graphics picture. I can't immagine typing fast enough to get a 6line message down before someone gets killed. I assumed it was a macro. I know that you can customize your windows with the .xtrekre file, and would like to know what more you can do.

I admit membership to the ranks of rookie with only 50 hours playing time, but what I was thinking of was setting macros for key sequences. For example: I know you can redefine keys like making 'Y' happen using a 't' but can you make one key do two things, like make 'w' do a 'l*' when trying to transwarp?'

Having one keypress do more than one action is considerd a borg feature,
and not allowed on most vanilla servers. You can change which key does
what, but it's always a 1-1 mapping.

You *can* create macros for messages, i.e. one keypress sends a whole line
(or several lines) of messages: see macro documentation virtually everywhere
fine clients are distributed. Multi-line macros tend to be both cheesy and
bandwidth-wasting.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

That's exactly right. I play by modem. I've started turning ignore
on for everyone I see sending big macros, especially if I've seen it
10 million times already. I mean a 5 line macro to let us all know
you plasmaed someone? C'mon.... "SMACK!" is every bit as
informative... And I've only seen a handful of picture macros I can
actually make out. Although someone (forget who) had this really
great picture of a guy giving the finger with both hands. It was good
and it wasn't repeated over and over, so they didn't get ignored.
Is it brmh that doesn't allow multi-line macros? That's my favorite
client and I've neve even used it :-)

Cheesy??? Hmmmm, lets see, I have cheddar, swiss, american,
bleu, motzzarella, cream, longhorn, colby, monteray jack,
and even some cheese-like substance called velveeta.

heh, better add me to your .xtrekrc file under auto-ignore.

And a nice o key }_ttptttttmADoosh

In plain text for WIRED gurus and other Twinks:
uncloak tractor torp torp phaser torp torp ... torp message to all Doosh

Ask the paradise guys for adding that to their borg (client) but COW will never
