comp10 Discussion: Voting page is up!

As of this writing the games are not downloadable/playable yet, but
the voting page has been updated with a list of the games. 26 entries,
14 are zcode, 9 glulx, 1 TADS3, 1 web-based, and 1 windows. A little
disappointing that there's only one TADS game, but that's infinitely
more than last year so why complain, eh? :)

I am refreshing the download page about once a minute, is anyone else
as impatient as I am?

I'm curious to see the games too (especially those created by my PR-IF
compatriots). But Stephen estimated (see twitter) that he wouldn't get
them posted until after midnight-Eastern tonight.

And indeed I am working on them now. It'll be a bit longer before
they're ready for download.

Sorry to hear that... yours was the unicorn one, I presume? It was
listed briefly on the voting page but disappeared before the downloads
showed up. Care to share what happened, perhaps to save others from
the same fate in the future?

Will you be releasing the game soon-ish? Or are you going to wait for
the comp to be over before publishing it?

You're also free to upload it to the IF Archive yourself.

The IF comp is for original, previously unreleased games only. That way we
can make sure Paul Panks's ghost doesn't enter stuff Paul wrote in Visual
Basic in 1988, which stuff already clutters the Archive. I applaud Stephen's
stern and manly enforcement of the rules.

Rover's Day Out was developed out of a public Google Code repository
and managed to pass muster last year.

I'm not sure if this is an argument for or against your position,
though. In theory anyone could have seen a preliminary copy of the
game source, compiled it, then asked to have the game rejected on the
grounds that the authors did not control access and that the game was
freely accessible.

Obviously this did not happen. I assume either Stephen knew about the
repository and decided it was not a material violation of the rules,
or else nobody thought it mattered and no one came along to spoil the
party.

An amendment of Rule 4 to specifically exempt prior source code
releases seems appropriate.

the trouble is that source code (intermingled with the content, in the
IF code) is not only a ugly beast to shave for applying OS licenses, but
also is a big, bad, ugly, nasty, evil, huge spoiler....

I still have not few, even I5, sources still to be studied & analysed
because I still don't have won the corresponding binary...
