Hail all,

I was just stolen from by an invisible thief. I didn't even see him till he
was well away from me. I didn't think this was possible. Can one steel while
hidden or stealthed?

No, but IIRC the current hiding/stealth rules say you can snoop while
hidden.

There is a delay between hiding before you can stealth and between
stealthing before you can steal, but it is trivial to do. Just hide and wait
for 12 secs, start stealth but don't move for 12 secs. Once you get these
out of the way, you can now walk around snooping people's packs w/o being
detected. Targetted stealing seems to work like all other last target
functions.

Let's say I am a bank thief<I'm not>. I remain hidden/stealthed while you
are walking around. I bring up your pack and double click it which puts it
in last object even though you are not next to me. Now if you walk by me or
I get next to you, I just hit last object and your pack is open.

Because of a bug with snooping, even if you move away your pack remains open
to me. I now sort through your stuff at my own pace until I see something I
like. I do the old "Use sewing" on the item I want, which gets it in last
target, then just stealth over to you and hit "use skill stealing/last
object" macro. This will reveal me, but as soon as I hit the macro I hit the
ground running. It should take 1/2 my ping + 1/2 of your ping before I even
become visible on your screen. If you have a slow connection and computer, I
am probably gone. You may never see me if you get a bit of packet loss,
maybe a flash and gone.

These are the good days believe it or not, used to be much worse. I am still
hopping for better days of course.

And people complain about thief-proofing. Given This, if it weren't for That,
the game simply could not be played. No one would be able to keep anything.

Just to add to this, most of the thieves that have stolen from me have
about <40ms connection. They are usually gone before you can hit your
vender buy bank recsu recdu gaurds!!!11 macro.

You probably only saw a flash because most people with cable flash
around your screen casually when they walk regardless.

Q, I didn't do "thief proofing" back in the heyday of the tank thief, nor
do I do it now. People iddn't steal from me then, nor do they now.

OCcasionally someone will take something, but they're on my last target
long before they even try, and are dead before they're off my screen.

You overstate the problem, and use it to justify using an exploit.

You were supposed to be able to with the patch that let you do a few other
skills (EI, Anatomy, etc) hidden, but you can't.
Unless they recently fixed it.

I think this would just change the order a bit. i.e. get pack into last
target, bump and stand still so it stays open when they move away, then
hide/sort/target/stealth/steal bug.

It has been a really long time since I had a stealther/thief, probably at
least a year. Get kind of rusty after the layoff, but never seem to miss it.
