Trouble with 1.666 to 1.9 patch (registered)

For some reason, after I follow the directions for applying the patch to the
letter, I still have DOOM2 telling me that it is version 1.666. Anyone else
have this problem? I'm getting my patch off of the oakland archive.

From my understanding, there isn't a patch to upgrade v1.666
directly to v1.9. When I upgraded, I changed v1.666 to 1.7a
first, and then to v1.9. I got both patches from the idsoftware
ftp site.

This is somewhat confusing, are you patching DOOM (1) registered or DOOM II?
If it's DOOM II, you need to upgrade to v1.7a first before going to v1.9.

Where exactly, and what is the filename of that patch?

I've got DOOM2 ver 1.666 and I got the patch to go from 1.666 to 1.7a but it
won't work. It says the DOOM2.EXE is not the right one for the patch???
Geez, if I could just get to 1.7a then I'd be able to use that 1.7a to 1.9
patch and quit being obsolete-doom-man.

Help if you can, please!

What is the date on you executable? Is it something like 8-25-94? If so, then it
won't work. Also, try a clean install of 1.666 first.
