Judging that many of rec.games.bridge people have some spare time
(by 2 accounts -- you have time to play bridge and time to hang on
usenet :-) ), I thought that some of you might be interested in
contributing to the series of articles on Bridge on Wikipedia.
Currently, these articles are a mixed bag: there's e.g. an article on
Winkle squeeze, but not an article on Forcing bid, nor about
Giorgio Belladonna or Bobby Wolff.
If you're interested (and not familiar with how Wikipedia works),
read on; otherwise, skip the rest and go to the next board :-).
Every Wikipedia article has an "Edit" tab where you can edit
the text of the article. After you complete it, click on "Preview"
to check it, then on "Save" so that you -- and everyone -- can see the
result. It's that simple. The bad side of it the same as the good
side of it -- since anyone can modify it, numerous vandals lurk around
and insert various kind of crap. The (admittedly not perfect) validation
of articles is based on the fact that other editors can see the
vandalism and revert it back.
1. CREATING A USER ACCOUNT
This step is optional, but highly recommended, so that other users can
identify you and talk to you. Go to:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Userlogin&type=signup
choose a user name and a password. Every next time when you want to edit
something, just click on "Sign In" link in top right corner and sign in.
Now, you can spare a few words about yourself on your own user page. A mere
"hi" is enough, for minimalists. Click on your "MyName" link in top
left corner, edit the page. That's it.
2. BRIDGE CATEGORY
Current bridge articles are listed in
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Bridge
and its sub-categories. You can pick up an existing one and improve it.
If a link in the article is red, that means that the target link does
not exist; you can create it if you want by clicking on red link.
Do NOT edit the category page above itself though; it's maintained
automagically. If you're making a new article, make sure that it's linked
from anywhere.
For example,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giorgio_Belladonna
will give you the opportunity to start an article on Giorgio Belladonna.
You should add a link from his page to Blue Team (bridge) and vice versa.
"Stub" articles are short introductory articles which need expansion.
The list of card-game stub articles is here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Card_game_stubs
(There's no category for Bridge-related stubs yet, because of insufficient
number of articles.)
3. EDITING BASICS
There are many Wikipedia conventions on text formatting, but here are the
basics:
bold
italic
link link to an existing (or not-existing) article on Wikipedia
(Case matters, except very first letter!)
bridge
gives _bridge_ but links to "Contract bridge"

External link (to www.foo.com)
Foo bridge site
External link, displaying _Foo bridge site_
Heading 1
Heading 2
Heading 3
Bridge-specific stuff:
♠ Spade symbol
♥ Heart
♣ Club
♦ Diamond
Hand diagram template:

in order N, W, E, S. It is possible, of course, to create rgb favorite
14-card hands :-).
See also templates listed here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Bridge_templates
Article categorization: insert one of

etc.
to assign a (sub)category to it; it will appear automatically in appropriate
category list.
To specify that the article is a "stub", insert
card-game-stub
somewhere at the end.
===========================================================
That's it. My Wikipedia account is

in case you want to reach me (and hang me :-) ).

Indeed, Wikipedia lists "automagically" on its list of portmanteau words

What is the attitude of Wikipedia to people copying material to it from
elsewhere, in disregard of copyright?
