Nutmeg Walnut Cake

2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp salt
125g butter
1 cup milk
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped

Preheat oven to 350. Combine sugar, flour, baking powder, nutmeg and salt.
Cut in butter until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Press half the mixture
into a well greased 8 inch square pan. Dissolve baking soda in milk, add
egg and pour over reserved flour mixture. Mix well and spoon on top of
pressed mixture in pan. Sprinkle walnuts over top. Bake at 350 F for about
30 minutes or until tester inserted comes out clean. Allow to stand 10
minutes before removing to cool on a wire rack
