Ted, Americans build some of the crapiest products in the world. Why the
hell didn't you purchase an American-built boat? Did you want to say
something about God being on our side while you're slagging the French
Canadians? You and that other butthole (the idiot who thinks he's
president) will have the entire world turned against us.

Go play yer guitar or maybe shoot something with your little bow and arrow,

However, after just a few days in Montreal I got to the point where I could do

Wowzers!

Both times that France was overrun in the last 100 years, the US sat on the
sidelines until the very *last* possible minute. French reluctance to sign onto
a poorly advised empire building expedition is hardly the same thing as
sitting back, "minding our own business", and trading directly or indirectly
with both sides.

We needed the French, briefly, about 225 years ago. Since then, we have no
need for them whatever. The very notion that France is considered by anyone
to be a major player in world affairs in the year 2003 is laughable.

It's not advisable to write anyone off, especially now. You never know when
your weakest ally may play a role in a much larger situation.

Urban myth... Never saw a Canadian lighthouse with a radar
installation. Never heard a lighthouse keeper capable of plotting
courses/tracks/speed/etc with the naked eyeball. Unless the
keeper was clairvoyant, they would not know the task force
was intent on maintaining a course directly into the rocks. If
they were that close, the conversation would not resemble
anything close to that presented. With that many ships, there
are dozens of eyeballs on radar screens, lookouts, the bridge
watch, watch-on-deck, etc. And, if the track were dangerous
or anywhere near a landmass, there would be additional
personnel closed up and manning key positions. Not too
mention the officer-of-the-watch on any of the escort ships
would immediately question any danger.

Sorry to ruin it for you...

In the late 1770's and early 1780's the French would have allied with anyone
fighting against the British Empire. The alliance with the Americans was purely
and simply politics. There was beneficial for them to help us at that time.

Shhh. Don't confuse the reactionaries.
A good percentage of them need to believe that all liberals think exactly
alike, and all blacks, jews, gays,
muslims, and everybody else except WASP Republicans does too. You hear it all
the time, "The liberals all want this or that!..do this ior that!...think this
or that!......"

If there were more than a single opinion among groups that were not WASP
Republicans, then the reactionaries among
that group would be mentally overtaxed trying to keep track of more than a
single thing at a time.

Just be glad that so many on the right don't know a darn thing their
spinmeisters and propagandists haven't told them. Sheep are like that, they
rely a whole lot on the shepherd. If you don't kow where your opposition really
is, it's all the easier to be blindsided. :-)

Absolutely correct. We're not in power because, unlike "some" in the other
camp, we think for ourselves and aren't as easily swayed by Rush/O'Reilly's

Not to worry - enjoy the brief moment in the sun!

Consider Afghanistan - our soldiers control a tiny area around the capitol
and a few bases along a proposed oil pipeline route. The land outside the
city is controlled by whatever thug has a gang with guns. In ten or twenty
years we will wish we had never heard of it. The little skirmishes are
already starting to crop up in the news. We did this sort of thing in
Somalia and ended up running away with our tails between our legs. And where
*is* that bin-Laden fellow anyway? Do you remember when it was important to
catch him? Are we any safer? All the bad guys went off to Pakistan (yep,
they have nukes there) and Somalia - where we have the aforementioned lousy
record of asserting influence. I imagine the terrorist training camps are
humming at full speed again! What's to stop them?

Iraq is not the same as Kuwait. One was on seized land (easy come, easy go),
the other is home territory. We bombed 'em last time -but we did *not* try
to invade them. Most people today are much too young to remember the Vietnam
daily death toll on the evening news. When that cranks up again what little
support there is for the adventuring to make the world safe for oil
companies will evaporate. The oil company sock puppet will start loosing
the high popularity figures.

If the war tom-toms sounds good to you, they may sound absolutely great to
folks scheming in other hot-spots. When we have our hands full with a real
war in Iraq the scum will come out to play! Remember Afghanistan? The
one-eyed mullah is still on the loose. Soul is in easy cannon range of the
DMZ. A few shells in the Kimpo airport could change the nature of the
negotiations in the region. They may be poor and hungry, but they do have
lots of guns, and they do have friends in China. Lest we forget, China has a
hankering for Taiwan, the maker of much of our technology. If you get bored,
try to figure out how much of our high tech would go away if we lost our
supply of goods from China and Taiwan. The last time I was there I saw the
production arm of most of Americas electronics industry. You may not
remember this, but a single fire in one plastics plant in Asia managed to
bring a halt to the entire electronics industry for many weeks. Last time
they backed down - they might not feel that way if we were busy. Say with
North Korea *and* Iraq *and* Afghanistan. The smirking chimp has not really
shown much power to think this one through!

As it stands, thirty percent of my federal tax buck is going to pay debt
service for Reagan's deficit spending. Reagan's much heralded (and very
expensive) fall of the Soviet block has freed up bunches of nukes for
diversion to terrorists. The guards of all this have not been paid real
money for years - A bucket of petro-dollars might look pretty good to a
fellow standing watch over a moldy old launcher. That's what we bought for 5
trillion bucks. Instead of the Democratic "Tax and Spend," the Republican
Mantra is "Borrow and Spend" Bush is already hard at work trying to pump up
the debt some more! After the public gets a taste of ballooning debt service
to pay for the tax cuts for rich, they may *start* to get a clue.

This will all come as the baby boom starts to retire. The older crowd has
always been a reliable base for the republican party - but many are having
to go back to work because of the rampant piggy-bank smashing. He may not
have brought it on by himself, but he is one of the pack. Do remember that
Bush was among the book-cookers that brought on the whole mess. (ya, I
know - He was 'vetted') Many may see this as letting the inmates run the
asylum. Large numbers of very poor, very pissed off 70 year old workers may
decide that they have had enough. And they may not vote Republican!

Say what you will about federal inefficiencies, it has been a remarkably
good way to get some things done. When the feds stop doing some things -
they won't get done anymore. The working poor will feel the pain as the find
that the cuts in federal spending forces a shift to local taxes, resulting
in a *much* higher total tax bill, and much poorer services.

There really are more poor people then there are rich people. Sadly, more so
every day. The voting demographics will swing as the working poor realize
that they *do* have to vote.

Then another 40 years of democratic party rule!

Mark Browne
P.S. By then, little Bush will have done much to march us away from the
current position of world leadership - perhaps with no turning back. It is
very easy to piss away power and wealth. It is much harder to get them back.
What do you suppose Rome looked like during the time of decline? The best
thing of all will be when people start to longing for the "good old days"
with Bill! As sad as it will be, I will laugh every time I hear that - I
fear it will be often.

Nicely said Mark. Thank you. I like the "borrow and spend" line.

My company did some simulations for the Federal Reserve Bank many years ago.
They were games wherein you could control monetary or fiscal policy
(depending on whether you were the fed or the president). I could always
tell the Republicans because they kept hitting the button to lower taxes
until the economy went into the toilet, then wondered what happened.

I watched a re-run of Braveheart recently.
There is a line in that movie I thought was
fairly succinct. The hero is scolding some
Scottish lords who are butt kissing the English king, rather than risk their
titles and estates in a struggle for independence.

He says (paraphrased): You believe that the common people exist only to provide
you with your largesse. I believe that your wealth exists only to assure the
liberty of the people.

Rich, poor.
There seems to be a prevailing conservative attitude that if you are poor it
is your own fault - you must be stupid and lazy. If you are rich it must be
because you are smart and hard working, and you deserve it. We can't all be
live a life of idle luxury, someone has to work. It is just that simple. The
question revolves around what the living and working conditions are for
those that actually do the work.

As long as the people that hold the capitol use it to produce useful goods
and services, and pay a fair wage to the actual workers, I think that they
should make as much as they can. After they pay the true costs to produce
the goods and services. This should not be at the expense of the actual
people that toil to produce those goods and services. That is not communism,
that is paying for what you buy - not stealing it.

If I buy it, is should pay for it. For some reason I can't fathom, the
conservative movement seems to view paying the true cost of what you use
seems to be some sort of nutty liberal idea. If a company poisons the ground
water for an entire community there should be no cost to the owners? If
anything, the "government" should be left holding the bag. Why is the
concept of company responsibility for its actions grouped with something
only a nutty liberal environmentalist would ask for? Any conservative care
to explain the logic for this? It sounds like a smoke screen for greed to
me.

There is no reason I can think of to justify why someone should work a 12
hour day and come home to a sick kid that they can't afford health care for.
None. When I lived on the farm learned that you ate AFTER you fed the
animals. There is no reason I can see why the top staff should get a
anything more than hourly wages until *every* worker in the company gets a
good wage. What if you are stupid? It happens. Fifty percent of the
population is of below average intelligence. Someone has to be happy pushing
a broom. If you put a rocket scientist on the job he won't be happy, and
neither will anybody around him. If they work hard, is there any particular
reason they should not be paid. Someone DOES have to sweep the floor.

As to the rather goofy argument that if you paid someone for what they did
then products would cost too much. So? Did this justify slavery before the
invention of mechanized labor? If a burger costs 5 buck after you pay people
to make it - then that's what it costs. The ordinary rules of supply and
demand will take over at that point.

Let's give George credit for what else happpened or didn't happen in Texas.
Worst environmental record in the country. Pandering to corporate
necessities which are part of all of our downfall. If it were just the
trajectory of Clinton's slowdown, it'd been a lot shallower. It's the
corporate greed of those like Bush who've erased untold wealth in this

And Republicans appeal to the greed and selfishness in people. "If they
don't have money, it's not our fault."

Speaking of speaking to the less intelligent in our country? "Supply side
economics will get the country back on its feet."

Speaking of corrupt? "The banking industry needs to be deregulated."

Speaking of lying? I recently looked up the provisions for what's
considered a dividend. If a corporate executive borrows money from the
company and, at some point, decides that he/she cannot pay it back, it
becomes considered a DIVIDEND. Under Bush's new plan, that money would be
NON-TAXABLE. Who do you think the Republicans are looking out for?

Would you like to talk about Iran/Contra? A republican led initiative
featuring the likes of Donald Rumsfeld and many more from the current cast
of characters. While the US was officially supporting Iraq with arms,
technology and whatever else he needed, they were secretly supplying the
other side. Now look who they're going after, the same schmuck they made
their ally.

What's next in this litany of deceit?

Democrats have no corner on lying to the public. They learned from
excellent teachers, the Republicans.

You didn't even bother to read the freakin' response before you launched
into some diatribe about a non-related subject.

I took offense to the bombastic argument that "all the liberals" are arguing
that water stations should be set up in the desert. The offense was "all."

Why don't you argue the point I made? That's where the dense comment came
from.

Chuck,

Why do you always want to categorize me as a right wing fanatical, when even
my name states I am a Centrists. I like to think of myself as a Progressive
Middle of the Roader.

One other point you should realize is that even people who consider
themselves Republicans, can and do vote for independents and Democrats. I
myself voted for a Democratic Congresswoman last election. She was the best
candidate, and a moderate. Oh, and since I am correcting you for all of
your mistakes, remember that very few people who consider themselves
Republicans agree with Rush Limbaugh. The problem with both parties is that
the radical element are the vocal ones.

Now just admit you are wrong and we can get along.

Wishful thinking does not make it true. It's not about the personalities -
it's about ideas. All conservatives seem to be able to offer is to let the
rich raid the candy store. They account for less than 1 percent of the
population. You can only buy so many elections (see Florida for example). As
some point people are going to get as mad as hell, and they won't take it
any more. The Reagan/Bush legacy in a cancerous debt eating at our economy.
You whine over a few percent tax cut. Eliminate the debt and get a 30
percent cut. The mechanics of the debt are sneaky. As an engineer I am used
to performing "black box" studies. Lets look at the effect of the debt.
Thirty percent of my income goes to federal taxes. Thirty percent of that
goes to debt service. The net effect is that about 10% of my income goes
from my paycheck right into some bankers pocket. As I said, the foxes are
guarding the hen-house. The democrats are struggling to get the message out,
but they are starting to figure it out. It is my fervent hope that the Dems
get a bad choice on the ticket so we get the full effect of the conservative
program while the responsible party is still around. This will be the
necessary pavlovian paring to doom the conservative agenda for the next
generation.

Laugh while you can.

thanks Ted...
I take very little I read here to heart. Most times it's just someone
trying to irritate you for sport.
Thought I read that the 'real' Ted was a sailor.
If the 'real' Ted wanted a good motorboat I'd give him some links where he
could have one custom built in Nova Scotia probably a lot cheaper than
stateside..

I have a friend who bought a Donelle, I cannot believe the amount of boat he
got for the price he paid. I went to a trade show (Fish Expo) and couldn't
understand why the Maine builders were openly hostle to the Canadians, until I
saw the quality of this boat, and he told me the price he paid. (Please, no
union or geo-political quips).

In 2001 a groupof the local builders sent a few samples to the Annapolis
Boat Show. They seemed to be well received.
Not sure about the 2002 show.

I'm really surprised you would say that, I fish on a neighbors a couple of
times a week, and find the opposite of your opinion to be true. Can you give me
some examples?
