Sponsons have enabled canoes and kayaks to cross both the Atlantic and
Pacific Oceans: Dr. Hannes Lindemann's canoe had cork sponsons in
1956. His Klepper kayak in 1957 had air sponsons, and he survived a
hurricaine. Ed Gillet used sponsons to cross the Pacific Ocean in a
Necky double kayak. The little girls in the fully flooded open canoe
on http://www.sponsonguy.com can easily paddle the canoe at 2 knots
while standing up, pick up any disabled swimmers in the water, who
only have to swim over a submerged gunwale, and do this in waves; just
like the canoes and kayaks crossing the Atlantic Ocean or the Pacific
Oceans. They can paddle in waves, but it would be easier to paddle
sitting on seats instead of standing up; they can paddle fully
flooded, but it would be easier to clip on both sponsons slightly
below the gunwale so the canoe is nearly entirely self-bailing by
leaning on one sponson.

The stupidity of Rec.boats.paddle posters is so high that it is best
to picture them paddling standing up and in a fully flooded canoe. It
is best that they not use these sponsons to cross the Atlantic or
Pacific Ocean. But sponsons enable them, or boy scouts to paddle in
any waves. Lindemann did survive a hurricaine in a sponsoned kayak,
but he was capsized by an outrigger on one side. It is best not to be
unbalanced crossing the Atlantic!

Here is an example of the American Canoe Association endangering boy
scouts and killing many other American children:
"All national paddlesports organizations combined comprise just one
percent of committed users and a tenth-percent of the total user
group...To represent paddlers to regulatory agencies with legitimacy,
an organization should represent at least 10 percent of the sport's
committed users...The ACA is the paddlesport organization best
placed ...to protect paddlers from paddlecraft registration, required
education and mandated PFD use...protecting our sport from needless
government regulation." (Paddler, Sept./Oct., 2003, p.84)

Some posters make money as ACA instructors to sell fraudulent canoe
and kayak instruction: http://www.canoekayaksafety.com
