Dear Sammy,
It's advertised as removable.
Some people disassemble removable links effortlessly. Others find them
impossible.
Poor technique, dirt, and excessive wear can sometimes make it easier
to use a chain tool and another "removable" link.
Google the archives for some tips about these convenient, intuitive,
easy-to-use, and sometimes frustrating devices:

KMC says "no". If you install it as-is, that may be true. I find,
however, that if the two little nubs on the inside of the sideplates
manage to somehow vanish (the action of a file in this area has been
implicated but never proven) then the link works just like the other
brands, and unsnaps fairly easily. YMMV. HTH. HAND. (These

Funny, I don't see any removal instructions.
But, I'm quite sure the formidable Carl Fogel knows more than KMC does
about their own product. And he's ready to prove it with a big dollop
of passive-aggressive "humor".
Care to share, Fogel?

You clearly said: "It is advertised as removable". Now, prove that
point or withdraw.
Which goes to prove your sleazy ways, but has nothing whatever to do
with the fiction you posted: that the KMC Missing Link is "advertised
as removable".
Prove your point or withdraw.
Dear Carl,
I know you are earnest and want to provide proof the the KMC Missing
Link is "advertised as removable". But, this link seems to fail to do
so. Please advise.
Cheers!

This was posted after your "advertised as removable" claim, Twit.
I knew you were a bit of a pompous ass, but, until this exchange, I had
no idea of the dimensions.Sad.
Dear Carl,
Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, try as I might, I can't find
anything that relates to KMC Missing Links. Now, I know you would never
post an off topic link, so please point me to the relevant post.

Dear Carl,
Nothing about KMC Missing Links there either.
Are you admitting that, while you had no evidence that KMC Missing
Links were "advertised as removable", you have a very hard time
admitting you were just wrong when you said they were "advertised as
removable"?
Sad.
Cheers,
Oz
I can spoil this by revealing that I have removed the Missing Link on my
KMC X-10 dozens of times. No problems. I can't see how there even
could be a problem, as the link is pretty much identical to the SRAM
PowerLink. It doesn't know how many times it has been removed and
reattached.

i'm using X10-93 SILVER chain and MISSING LINK 10-SPEED

I CAN remember the first time to take it off it took some thinking

Dear Carl,
I get the distinct impression that you now know were wrong about KMC
Missing Links being "advertised as being removable" and will do
anything to avoid admitting your error.
Prove me wrong. (But I don't think you can.)

Good to learn that the Missing Link *is* reusable. The instructions in the
10 speed KMC chain I just put on says that it is not reusable. But after I
installed the chain I couldn't figure out why it is not reuseable, as it so
much resembles SRAM and other links.
Is there any *trick* to resuing the Missing Link?

On the Missing Links that I've used they all had a small notch in the
slot where you pull the chain tight to "snap" the chain together. I
couldn't detach the chain at the MIssing Link by using my hands only
because of the notch. I did detach it though by using a pair of needle
nose pliers, but that was a pain. I would imagine if someone had the
right tool you could grind that notch away and the link would be
reusable.

Nope, it's just like the SRAM/Craig ones. I use them with Shimano chains,
which are often on sale (because everybody wants the SRAM ones that come
with a master link).

Guys, relax. I've been using them for years, probably with and
without the nubs, and they work fine. If they're stiff, give 'em a shot
of WD40, and use pliers to undo.

Dear Jobst,
The stuff above is just something persistent that clings to my shoe.
There's an amazing amount of it, but eventually it will go away.
You may have missed these two links, which address the KMC question:

It's hard to see those two links when that other stuff keeps covering
them.

I think the published non-reusability statement in the US market may
be an artifact of one or both of two things.
First, the older design of KMC Missing Links was clearly built to
resist removal. This design misfeature was easily defeated, but that
wasn't an officially acknowledged fact.
Second, I suspect (but have no hard evidence to back up my suspicion)
that KMC's US reps either want to prop up the sales of their
inexpensive link, or they have advised against re-use for liability
reduction reasons, possibly related to the fact that the early design
made it harder to remove the link without bending the sideplates.
That's just my observations and opinions.
Dear Carl,
The phrase you used was "advertised as reusable". Did KMC hire Yellow
Jersey Advertising to do ads on Usenet?
Please advise.

Oz

Dear Carl,
This post was made *after* you posted that KMC Missing Links were
"advertised as reusable". If you had this knowledge in hand when making
your original post, it would have been the first thing you pulled out
of you pedantic, passive aggressive holster after I challenged your
assertion. You didn't, as the Google record reflects. You know it, I
know it. You are fooling no one.

Dear Carl,
The subject was KMC Missing Links.
I know you'd like to obscure that fact, but it isn't going to happen.

I think that you need to take a step back and review your behavior. I don't
know you or Carl, and have no idea what started this, but you seem
completely out of control. What are you trying to prove, and even if you
prove it will it be worth it? I can't imagine that it could be.

You know, some of us are hoping somebody will take the high road and
just let this die. What is this, the irresistible force meets the
immovable object? I really couldn't care less about the KMC Missing

Is there medication involved here? I'm reminded of an exgirlfriend who would call at 3am and not
