My right front cantilever brake (a Shimano R550 I think) has a
problem. These brakes have a ring with a tiny stud that goes into one
of the three holes of the braze-on. The ring works against a long
spring - and in fact takes the place of the coiled spring on more
conventional cantis. (With the coil springs, the end of the spring
goes into the braze-on instead of the stud.)

Anyway, the right front stud ring won't turn, rendering the brake
useless. It's had one too many runs in the sluch and it's seized. It
looks like the whole shebang was put together with an arbor press, but
perhaps someone call confirm that it's not disassemble-able. And if it
won't, any advice on freeing the stud ring beyond flooding it with
solvent and lube would be appreciated.

Next step would be to just replace it, I suppose. This hasn't been a
great winter for this poor bike.

yep, my experience is you'll continue to have problems until you
finally give in and get a new one. I reckon you can find some good off
season deals locally and online- but don't leave it too long because
good brakes are good to have when stopping becomes vitally important-
and you never know when that may be AND heck, you need to replace them
anyways. Just put a bit of non-soluable grease over the pivots to help
seal off grime getting in on the new ones before you install them.
