Is it necessary or advisable to lubricate the moving parts of the
Ultegra shifters? If so, what lubricant?

Thanks

It's only necessary to lube an Ultegra STI shifter if you want it to last
for awhile and shift nicely. In other words, it should definitely be a part
of routine maintenance. For info on how to do it (it's very easy), check
out this page on our website-

bottom of the page.

Absolutely, blast them regularly with WD-40...since ya can't take 'em
apart(well you can but getting them back together can be 'tricky')-

Thanks for the info. Is it worthwhile or perhaps harmful simply to
soak the "guts" of an STI shifter in WD-40? Thanks in advance.

Not at all. From everything I've seen, WD-40 or Powerlube works fine. My
preference would be for something like Powerlube, which is initially very
thin until the carrier evaporates, unlike WD-40 which is simply very thin
oil that doesn't thicken slightly afterward. However, I've seen no evidence
that WD-40 causes problems, only that it, like Powerlube, has saved a lot of
levers that people were about to toss out.
