The California Gold Rush town of Nevada City came alive again on
Fathers Day weekend for the 33rd edition of its bicycle classic, run
on the traditional, steep criterium course with about 200 feet of
climbing per lap. Skies were clear with temperatures in the 90s F.
The many bars, ice cream stores, and tourist paraphernalia shops were
fully loaded, as were many of the spectators.

Some riders didn't come this year because it conflicted with the USCF
National Road Championship, which made it easier for the pros. As
always, the fields shattered on the first lap and were spread all over
this arduous course.

The 20 lap women's race was won decisively by Shari Kain, who went for
a prime 5 laps into the race and never looked back while lapping most
of the field, many of them several times. She had flown into
Sacramento from the national championships the night before and
managed to get to Nevada City just in time to race. She mentioned
after the race that she has been selected to ride the Tour de France
(TATEYYK) Feminine.

The 40 lap men's race took awhile to develop, but after a dozen laps
Steve Hegg, Alexi Grewal, Roberto Gaggioli and Peter Stubenrauch rode
off the front and began overrunning the stragglers from the back of
the pack. Grewal finally broke free by himself at 18 to go and
motored through the struggling packs for the rest of the race.
However, masters rider Glen Winkel, who had mechanical trouble and was
caught by Grewal, managed to suck his wheel for 13 laps and even stole
a prime from him. Last year's winner, Mike Engleman, managed to hold
on for 20th place, just ahead of Winkel and Kevin Metcalfe.

Feminine is supposed to be masculine here.
