They only have a seventy man field. Where's Saturn, Navigators, and

Given the age group and Stevie's complaining that Henry doesn't have the
demands of a full time job, he must be for child labor, too.

Must be kind of rough to be 15 or 16 and balding, though, but I'll bet it
makes sneaking into bars a lot easier.

Man, Carl this is really bad. How long have you been secretly

This isn't the first time the pic in question has been brought up in rbr.

If what I wrote was offensive and out of character for me regarding the
subject matter, I apologize. If the issue is that I linked to a photo that
happened to be of LANCE instead of Ronde Champ or anyone else, that's a
different story.

My wife and I followed the Altoona Tour, other than Pittsburg. The race
organization as it applies to the primary men and women's stage race
participants appeared to be first rate and the officiating crew was
substantial, although less than last year. The local police organizations
provided support and cooperation at levels that most local races would love
to see, even if in only one or two minute intervals. All of that part of the
race seemed to run well (except maybe for the motorcycle that John Wirsing
hit - BTW, #80 - Rod, the official, WAS trying to move the sucker, but it
was locked - your comment in front of the first crowd all week should have
gotten you DQ'd). That's the positive.

Spectators - with Joe Saling brought in to do announcing, etc. the
presumption is that they want spectators. Well, their modus operandi was to
to fence off all of the shaded areas for their crew and event set-up areas
and leave nothing for spectators. There is more seating at the average
district race - Tour de Toona/International provided none. Joe kept talking
about Coke being the Tour soft drink - but at most places you couldn't buy
any. The first vendors appeared the last weekend. We heard many, many
complaints from locals that if they had any warning, they would have been
selling food and drink outside, but they weren't clued in at all. The long
road point-to-point ended up at the Kaufmann's at the shopping center (Logan
something shopping center) and the Kaufmann's rep was near furious because
she could get no one to respond to her queries on tie-ins and additional
crowd items, like a bleacher. Total seating: the edge of the Kaufmann plant
area. The restaurant just past Kaufmann's inside the mall had a portable
set-up that they could have used, but until my wife bought a Pepsi from
them, they didn't know a bike race was in the area. Martinsburg - you could
find the bike race if you had been there the previous year or if you
followed the signs for the dairy event... The one really good venue:
Hollidaysburg, thanks to the public benches up and down Allegheny, the Pizza
place at the top and the Irish Pub at the bottom, once it opened (and
everyone was selling Pepsi, no matter what Joe was saying). Worst? IMO,
Johnstown, because the only significant shade was grabbed by the race
organization, no seating near the start-finish (unless you count the
bridge), and the race used the construction detour route to get in and out
of the city. I apologize to the woman competitor that I nearly killed when I
took the illegal U-turn in front of the motor escort, but 1) I was
completely lost and doing anything to get out of Johnstown, including
cutting off motorcycle cops with illegal turns, and 2) I didn't know there
were people still on the course, even I had known I was on the course (none
of the other drivers seem to know either). (BTW, you'd do almost anything to
get out of Johnstown at 3:00 PM, too.)

Coverage: the Mirror coverage was better than what you usually get for bike
races, but less than the last few years - and often not accurate, especially
as to times and exact places for the next day events. No one seemed to know
that there were additional cat races starting Friday, and you could bearly
tell from the coverage. If you were interested in anything but top-ten,
forget it (unlike last year, when they did the entire 120 or so list).
Several locals indicated that changing the name to the International is NOT
helping local coverage.

Sponsors - the organizers had better have a good presentation to keep most
of them on board for next year. If I looked at last year and then this, and
I was a sponsor, I would have second, and third, and fourth thoughts about
continuing.

Locals - a lot less enthusiastic than last year. Probably more negative than
positive away from the race sites (we stayed at a bed and breakfast in
Hollidaysburg and heard a lot of comments at the local restaurants and
Sheetz's or whatever the plural for a Sheetz is).

Lower category races: one competitor that I know said that even to the last
minute it was unclear what was available and open - this was a cat 3. Cat 5
on Sunday - three people and one decided to cramp at the end of lap one and
call it a day. Dave Osborne couldn't do his 'stay six or seven down and come
around' in the 35+, because there were only six total in the race. Probably
the first time all week that the spectators outnumbered the racers.

Final comment - when I told one of the members of the organization that they
would do a better job keeping walk-up spectators if they had a place to sit
down at least occasionally, I was told that that was extemely unlikely to be
considered in the future - too expensive. So they can bring in fencing to
block off the shaded areas so the volunteers have a place to sit and eat,
but they think its too much to have a place for even a few spectators sit
while waiting for the next 45 minute lap to finish.

OK, one more comment - the local cop doing crowd control has been around for
several of these and he said it looked really frayed around the edges,
figuratively speaking. I'd have to agree. I hope that it was all because of
last minute changes, loss of expected sponsors, etc., but I keep thinking
about the only sign for the bike race in Martinsburg being the first one off
of the main street and no others and I wonder. Holding a bike race and
forgetting the arrows to the race?

What's offensive about it? LANCE was in public w/ a boner and posing
for photos with Verbruggen. If any of you lurkers have your panties in
a wad and emailing Sundquist with complaints, then you've got
something rather large stuck up your ass.

LANCE still gets the random boner. Good for him.
