This newsgroup is rec.bicycles.racing.
100 mile hairy-legged Fred rides are fine, but this group is
interested in licensed racing.
Just be happy you weren't trying to sell something.

The guy was wrong about everything except the part about you being a poser.
Why the fuck are you getting so worked up over what someone else thinks? Why
the fuck are you putting so much thought and effort into a century? Is going
a little bit faster than a bunch of fat, gray-hiared, old men really worth
all the shit you're putting yourself through? Ride your hundred miles and
have fun. Get over yourself....

I agree with Henry. This discussion belongs in alt.bicycles.rides, home
of the Fred century.
Victor, you're going to draw a whole lot less fire if you do it first
and talk about it later. Of course, now if you DO ride for 40 miles at
100% threashhold there are going to be a lot of really biting comments
when you tell everyone about.
Keep us posted even if you don't make it because it'll be good for a
chuckle either way.
My take is that there's no way you're going to hold 100% LT for 20
miles let alone 40. Lactate threshhold isn't a firm demarcation point
but is instead a variable one that wonders a little up and down during
your ride. Trying to maintain LT will always put you over a little now
and again so that you started building up lactic acid. It doesn't take
long before it's too painful to continue -- or more likely the pain
doesn't seem to get that intense but for some reason you just seem to
lose interest in the project.
You go Girl!
"Back in the day", there was this guy from the Flying Wheels Bike Club
who put on a race at Fort Baker across the bay from downtown San
Fransisco every spring, they called him coach "Eddie C". He used to
stand on a ladder with a megaphone before the start of the race, and
with slurred speech (I think he was a former boxer or something) he'd
announce that "this race has no cry babies".
wow - if any of that's true, then you must have a massive case of roid
rage.
poser? maybe not. Fred - you bet.
out of curiosity, you ever try any of this out of CP? get over the
bridge, ride out to nyack, get some (comparatively) fresh air.

thanks for the link lauhoe. yep. cofirms that victor/r600 is both a
poseur and a fred, like the majority of central park riders, bar the
actual racers.
hey vic/fred/r600: what's the point in riding a century like a race?
if you want to race, then race. join up with crca and do the club
races.
Hey, I resemble that remark! This is the kind of attitude from racers
that made me quit helping out at races. Buncha prima donna Lance
wannabes....

Dick, for what it's worth, I have far more respect for the fat, gray-hiared,
old men out enjoying their centuries than for the pathetic wannabe who is
trying to turn that century into a race.

Now what is hard is doing it in under 4 hours. For that your going to need
to stay in the fast group and not get dropped.

The best way is certainly to find a group that's going the right speed and
stay with them. I find that my quickest training rides involve and hour or
two @ 40+ km/h with the wielertourists, and the rest at a pretty easy pace.
It works better for me than going at a moderate pace all day, mainly due to
the massive energy saving from working in a bunch, and the elimination of
the need to motivate yourself to ride at 34 km/h for 5 hrs.

That is trickier and can hurt. I wouldn't recommend doing this by the
numbers. Also, if you can do this you're going to be pretty handy in a race.
Cheers,
Jeff
The Louisville (Kentucky) Bicycle Club is doing a cool thing with
their Old Kentucky Home Tour next month. It's a weekend tour, but for
those who are interested, they can also do it as a time trial. I'm
just hoping to complete a century but folks who are fitter than I am
will have a good oportunity to compete for the laurels. Check it out
at www.okht.org
