Not sure if it will work, I think I used to use a 26 with mine. I believe
those Sugino cranks which came on the '86 SR 400 (I had one) were 144 bolt
pattern which means that you are pretty much stuck with the 42 , I think a 41
is available but hard to find.

I would recommend finding a 110 bolt pattern crank, either Sugino or Sakae, I
find them on garage sale bikes for about $10. I like them and with the 110 mm
bolt pattern you can go to a 38 or even 36 tooth chain ring.

I am running a 13-30 SunTour Freewheel with a SunTour short cage, no
problems even when indexing. I also have a 38 tooth small front. I can
force small large but try to stay away from those bad combinations.

SunTour Cyclone was supposed to be able to handle the widest range.

Thanks for the previous responses to my question regarding the correct chain
and freewheel for my old SunTour Cyclone friction derailleurs. I bought a
Sachs PC41 chain, but I'm thinking about changing the gearing on my bike as
well, and need more advice regarding my drivetrain before I put the chain
on.

My '86 Cannondale SR 400 road bike has 42/52 chainrings on Sugino cranks
with a 13-15-17-19-21-24 freewheel. I mostly ride 50-75 miles per week on
flat bayside bike paths, but plan on attempting a few Bay Area/Northern
California centuries later in the year. I have a reconstructed knee (ACL)
and am paranoid about knee strain, so I want to move to slightly lower
gearing for the hilly terrain I'll be riding.

I can't find any 26T Sachs freewheels, but I did find a 13-15-17-20-24-28
that I think will satisfy my needs. Does anyone know if my SunTour Cyclone
derailleur will work with the 28T cog? Or am I better off sticking with a
13-24 freewheel and getting 39-52 chainrings? Also, is there a particular
type of chainring I'll need to fit my old Sugino crankset? Thanks,

It partly depends on the derailleur hanger and the vertical distance between
the rear axle and where the derailleur mounts. Try it and see is the best
suggestion. I usually find that derailleurs will cope with a couple of teeth
bigger cog than the their specifications might indicate.

I have old (ca. 1980) Cyclone on my Riv, and I'd say there's no way a
short-cage Cyclone of that vintage would work with 28 teeth (26
probably). Other Suntour models probably have more range, but the early
Cyclones are pretty limited. Of course 1986 implies the Cyclone II,
which may be able to go to 28. You could try it and see... you'll know
right away on the workstand if it'll work.

The long-cage Cyclone GT, now, would do up to 32 or 34. One thing to try
is to find the cage from a similar-vintage GT model or VGT; many of them
can be interchanged. The long cages typically have the jockey pully
mounted farther from the cogs, giving more room for the larger cog as
well as greater capacity to take up chain.

The Cyclone came in three different configurations; identical
except for cage length. The short-cage model (RD-6000) only
accommodates up to 24T, the medium (RD-6200) 28T and the long
(RD-6800) 30T (although I've seen it stretched to 32T on
occassion but you have to be careful with chainring sizes).
There was also a Cyclone M-II that came in short (RD-3500; 26T)
and long (RD-3700; 34T) configurations. Check the part number on
yours to determine capacity.
