Well, I changes the oil in my 1983 RX7 today, put in some Mobil 1 because
I've heard good things about it, and it made my motorcycle run better
when I put it in there... Well, my RX7 has always smoked when I start it
and when I run it over 90mph, sure it needs a rebuild, I can't afford one,
so I figure if I put some Mobil 1 in there it won't smoke as bad
since Mobil 1 is supposed to handle the heat so much better... WRONG.
I guess the stuff is so slick it just floods past the seals where there
used to be a trickle, so now my RX7 has a permanant smoke screen behind
it. Let me tell you, I've never seen so much smoke. I'm changing back to
trusty Castrol 10w40 tomorrow. Don't let this turn you away from
Mobil 1, it is great in my bike, it's just that it makes bad engines worse.
Anyone in the Dallas area who sees a black RX7 with a big cloud behind
it, wave! It's me Tom.

castrol 20w-50 being somewhat thicker will cut down a bit on the
blowby--straight 50 would do fine too, but the car will not start
below 32 degrees or so...

You should have called Mobil or Mazda. They do not recommend
M-1 for rotary/Wankel engines. Jan

It depends on what's wrong with the engine. It will leak past seals
that other oils will not and it will free up sticking parts that other
oils won't touch. In some cases this will cut down on the amount of
oil burnt and in other cases increase it.

My rabbit had no leaks out but did burn a fair amount of oil and there
was a bad knock when I put the clutch down when the engine was hot
(there was a fair amount of end play in the crankshaft). When I put
mobil 1 in the knock dissappeared, the amount of oil it burnt was
drastically cut but it developed a leak in a cam shaft seal. That
was seven of eight years ago and the engine is still running fine.

My claim is that the rings were stuck and the mobil 1 freed them so
they could follow the cyclinder walls better thus cutting down on the
amount of oil getting by. If the oil is getting into the cylinder
through the valve seals I can see that the oil consumption would go up.

Anyway I think it's a hell of a good oil.

I'm a little scared to use 20w-50 because I put some of
that in there once and it smoked REALLY BAD (it was
Pennzoil I think), about as bad as it does now. Doesn't
make much sense does it? I tried 20w-50 because I had
the same idea you did, but it didn't seem to work
like I though it would. One more thing I should
have said was that if I start it and let it idle it
pours smoke out all over the place and also smokes
most of the way to work, but if I start it and
immediately rev it up to 4K (ouch! I know) it blows
out a little smoke then stops! Like, maybe those high revs
blow all the oil buildup out of the combustion
chamber before it has a chance to burn and SMOKE.
I know 4k right after starting is supposed to be bad
for an engine, but I've been doing it for 30K miles
on a 130K mile rotary with no ill effects yet. Maybe all
that oil that leaks into the chambers is providing
lubrication as I rev it up... I don't know. These
rotaries are MYSTERIOUS. I'll just keep on bothering
the neighbors in the morning until I can scrape up $500
and put another engine in.

Is this true for just M-1, or for all 20W50 synthetics?

Mazda Corp states that synthetics are verboden for all rotaries they make. I talked
to a friend who works for Mazda in their east cost HQ (area troubleshooter) and he says
that synthetics do some nasty stuff to the engine seals.

I have used Mobil 1 in my modified Rx-7 since 1988 and it runs fantastic.
I autocross the car and drive it very hard so I change the oil every
6 months (this is approx. 3000 miles) and fiter every 3 months.

I know two other people who have used Mobil 1 on older Rx-7's and had
the engines last for almost 200,000 miles. Not bad for a rotary!!

I think the reason Mazda does not recommend synthetic oil is due to
the fact that the oil is injected into the combustion chamber. This
lubricates the rotor seals, is burned and sent out the exhaust. Synthetic
oil will not burn. Therefore raw oil will be sent to the exhaust and
clog the catalytic converters (86 and newer Rx-7 has 3 converters).

Anyway, good luck from Rx-seventh heaven.

FYI....My Mazda Rx-7 shop manual says not to use any type or brand of synthetic oil.
