You should have called Mobil or Mazda. They do not recommend
M-1 for rotary/Wankel engines. Jan

It depends on what's wrong with the engine. It will leak past seals
that other oils will not and it will free up sticking parts that other
oils won't touch. In some cases this will cut down on the amount of
oil burnt and in other cases increase it.
My rabbit had no leaks out but did burn a fair amount of oil and there
was a bad knock when I put the clutch down when the engine was hot
(there was a fair amount of end play in the crankshaft). When I put
mobil 1 in the knock dissappeared, the amount of oil it burnt was
drastically cut but it developed a leak in a cam shaft seal. That
was seven of eight years ago and the engine is still running fine.
My claim is that the rings were stuck and the mobil 1 freed them so
they could follow the cyclinder walls better thus cutting down on the
amount of oil getting by. If the oil is getting into the cylinder
through the valve seals I can see that the oil consumption would go up.
Anyway I think it's a hell of a good oil.

Is this true for just M-1, or for all 20W50 synthetics?

I have used Mobil 1 in my modified Rx-7 since 1988 and it runs fantastic.
I autocross the car and drive it very hard so I change the oil every
6 months (this is approx. 3000 miles) and fiter every 3 months.
I know two other people who have used Mobil 1 on older Rx-7's and had
the engines last for almost 200,000 miles. Not bad for a rotary!!
I think the reason Mazda does not recommend synthetic oil is due to
the fact that the oil is injected into the combustion chamber. This
lubricates the rotor seals, is burned and sent out the exhaust. Synthetic
oil will not burn. Therefore raw oil will be sent to the exhaust and
clog the catalytic converters (86 and newer Rx-7 has 3 converters).
Anyway, good luck from Rx-seventh heaven.
FYI....My Mazda Rx-7 shop manual says not to use any type or brand of synthetic oil.
