Replacing the timing chain on a '96 GTI VR6

Hi,

I'm posting for a friend who owns a '96 GTI VR6. Does anyone know if
the timing chain needs to be replaced (similar to a belt?). I
remember reading somewhere that it does not but don't remember for
sure so I thought I'd post.

It should not need to be replaced, however those engines had a problem with
the chain tensioner that required the same labor procedure to correct. This
involves removing the transmission for access. I think this was a problem in
early production up to a certain model year or VIN #. Hopefully someone
with accurate info on this will chime in to clarify.
