Hi,

I am in the market for a new/used(2004-2005) Honda Accord and was
wondering what is the difference between the EX and the LX models?

Also, when would the 2006 Accord be coming out? If anyone has been
closeley following the cars previews is it something to wait for or
better to get the '05 instead? What are the good/bad things in the new
accord?

Lastly I am sure that there would be a unanimous agreement in that the
Accord is wayyy better then the camry (in this group at least), but am
wondering if someone could offer and unbiased opinion as to why is it
better and what (if any) are the drawbacks?

Thank you for your help.

You will still be in the current generation. Expect only minor
changes. I have never seen a good reason to upgrade within a
generation. The 2006 should be out next month +/-. In my opinion,
now is the time to buy a 2005, not wait for a 2006. There are
significant differences between the LX and EX versions, but it's all
bells and whistles. The basic car is the same. Go to Edmunds
http://www.edmunds.com/ for a complete explanation of the differences.
You can also go to the Honda website http://automobiles.honda.com/ ,
but I like the way Edmunds explains it.

I don't think you will find unanimous agreement that the Accord is
much better than the Camry. Depends on what you are looking for.
Both are very reliable cars, and both hold their value well. The
Honda has a more sporting suspension, and many like its looks better.
The Camry is often described as being more like a Buick in the way it
rides and performs. Either car is an excellent choice.

Virtually no differences with the 2006 model compared to 2005.

The 2007's will have a revised rear end.

The 2008's will be all new.

I think the EX has 4-wheel disc brakes, while the LX has front discs and
rear drums. The EX also adds a moonroof and some other fancy stuff.

I don't know what changes Honda has planned for the '06 Accord. It was all
new for 2003, so if Honda maintains its usual 5-year cycle, the next
generation of Accord would arrive for 2008. I would imagine the '06 will
come out in the fall, as usual.

As I said to another poster recently, Camry has a slightly smoother ride but
Accord has slightly tighter handling. So if ride quality is a higher
priority then handling, then perhaps one should look at a Camry first.

And personally, I think the Camry looks better than the Accord sedan. But
the Accord coupe looks a bit better than the Camry-based Solara coupe.

I'm pretty sure both have 4 wheel discs.
The EX has alloy wheels, the moonroof, and climate control.

You should check out edmunds.com

They have a bottomless pit of information.
Really good site, but you have to poke around a bit.

I just looked on Edmunds, and we were both half right. The LX 4-cylinder
has front discs and rear drums, but the LX V6 has discs on all 4 wheels.

If the new Hondas are due to come out in Fall does that mean that the
'05s would be on sale at that time? In which case is it advisable to
buy it right now or wait till the new models come out?

- What percent discount from the blue book invoice value would be a
"good price" to buy it for? For example if I am getting a car 5% less
then the listed invoice price on the blue book is that a good deal?

You need to keep lookin' at the Edmunds web-site. Sometimes, dealers
will be given an incentive of $500 to $1000 to get rid-off older models
etc., You need to know this, before you go. Also, watch the newspapers.
Sometimes they advertise the sale price -- sometimes, absolute minimum.
Invoice price is one thing, but you need to look at dealer's incentive,
too.

Hi,

A couple of questions:

- So I like the 2006 Accord.. the question being again, when the new
cars come out would their MSRP be the same as the '05 Accords right
now? and would the '05 Accords go down in price? or would the '05
Accords be about the same price as now and the '06 Accord be at a
higher price?

- I found a 2004 Accord that I like with the lucrative reason being
that whoever bought the car had bought a 10 year bumper-to-bumpuer
warranty with it. Its a 2004 Accord EXL. When I am factoring in the
pric I want to know approximately how much would the 10 year warranty
cost? Also, when I purchase a used car how do I pay tax on it? (I am
in New York City).

Thanks again for all your help.. much appreciated.

The '06 should be "about" the same MSRP the '05 was. Maybe a small
difference. How much they mark down an '05 may be a moot point by then.
How many do you think they will have left? It's not like with GM where they
have tons of previous model year vehicles sitting around.

Tax is paid when you go to register/transfer title at the NYC DMV based on
A) tax rate for where you are registering the car and B) price stated on the
bill of sale you present.

Anyone have any idea how much a 10 year bumper-to-bumper warranty costs
on a Honda Accord?

is it the hondacare warranty? or some shitty fly-by-night aftermarket
"warranty". how many miles on the car? how many miles is the warranty
good for? 100k? how much do you drive?

from $800 on up, depending on how bad the dealer screwed the original
owner. my g/f was offered a 7 yr extended warranty (first 3 covered by
OEM warranty, anyway) for "only $30/mo"

do the math on a 5 yr note... $30x 60= $1800. i said hell no, and they
immediately dropped it to $600. she ended up taking it. i wouldnt have,
but hey- its her car. and i saved her $1200 right off the bat.

Anyone who pays attention knows that extended warranties are cash-cows
for the companies. Ever notice how often you get asked now on the
most trivial of purchases? Even things that only cost $30 or so? It
is well known that extended warranties often make more profit for the
companies than profit on the product itself. In the long term, it is
not a cost-effective purchase.

Think in terms of buying a car. Let's say you negotiate a deal down
to $500 profit for the dealer. Then he tacks on a $1,000 extended
warranty. Which do you think will earn the dealer more money? I
would NEVER buy an extended warranty on a new vehicle.

i wouldnt either, especially on a honda or toyota. doubly especially on
a configuration that has an excellent track record. i bet the people
that got extended warranties on honda v6/automatic are happy

Well, I had a '99 EX V-6 and now a '03 EX V-6 and have not had one
minute of trouble with either one. Put a total of about 90,000 miles
on them. I know some people have had problems, but luckily not me.
In fact, the only problem I had with either of them was a leaky roof
railing trim strip in the '03. Just made it under the warranty
period.

Hi,

Thanks for your replies.. I was still a little confused by your
replies. You guys vehemently oppose extended warranties, but is it
really a bad idea to have everything in your car covered for a $1000
more bucks? I mean, if anything goes wrong with your car you end up
spending at a few hundred on it. And in Mike's case, a 7 year warranty
for $600 bucks? I understand that the dealer makes money on it, but
what do YOU really lose? A peace of mind for the next 10 years, and if
nothing goes wrong, you still only paid 600 bucks, rite?

And in simple terms would I be better off buying a new accord '05 rite
now, or wait till next month when the '06's come out for a better deal?

thank you very much!
ANd as dick said he just made it under the warranty period in '03. If
he hadn't what would your cost to fix that glitch have been?

I appreciate your replies and am not trying to discount them by any
means. I just dont know too much about cars (its the first car I am
buying) and am thinking from different perspectives as to what would be
the best thing to do.

and mike what do u mean when you say

automatic V6 or are you saying that the automatic V6's are crap? Maybe

The only thing I have ever spent any where near $600 to repair on Hondas has
been the timing belt and the extended warranties don't cover that.

The '05 will be immediately a one year old car. The line of reasoning here
should be about how long you plan to keep it. If you are thinking two or
three years, you will lose an extra year's worth of depreciation when you go
to trade it. If you plan to keep it forever (forever is about 5 years),
that doesn't come into play and you should go with the best price you can
get.

I find this comment confusing as well. Honda extended the warranty on the
transmissions that have problem potential to 7 years/100,000 miles, so an
aftermarket extended warranty would be pointless for this purpose.

If you really intend to keep your car for 10 years, there is no
question that buying the '05 is a better deal for you. Take advantage
of the model year closeouts. Both of our last Accords were purchased
just before the next year came out, and we got terrific deals on them.
In 10 years, the difference in resale value between the '05 and '06
might buy you six-pack. Don't even put end-of-use value into your
thinking because it doesn't matter.

supposedly. on some cars. and there are always dealers that love to play

"never heard about that"

the extended warranties are practically worthless. read the fine print.
they do not cover anything that wears out, they do not cover labor
[typically], they just "cover" major items that never fail like
crankshafts, and even then, it's latent defects, not wear. these
policies are written by people that can do the math. if probability of
failure x the cost of repair exceeds the price of the policy, including
all the overhead, commissions, etc., you don't need to be a rocket
scientist to figure out that the policy would never be written.
therefore statistically, you will never benefit from it. again, read
the fine print with this in mind & you'll see what i mean.

Thanks Elmo P. Shagnasty for your reply. I am exactly in that position
which is why I am contemplating the warranty and was wondering how much
would it cost?

I am looking at either brand new accords or used models from 2004 or
2003 with under 20K miles on them. Was there a problem with the V4's
also or only the V6's till mid 2004?

I understand that it doesn't matter if I buy the '05 or the '06. My
question is, is it the best time RIGHT NOW to get the best deals or
wait till sometime in September to get the best deals?

Sorry for the repeated questions, but I am really an amateur in this
field and could use all the help I could get!

Thanks

Depends upon the dealer's inventory and what you want in the car. The
longer you wait, the less choices you will have in color, etc. I
think right now is the optimum time.

It's not bad, per se, but it's a losing proposition for buyers
financially. Ultimately it's your car & your $$$, so do whatever lets

and if you are going to go that route, best to pay for it seperately.
say for the sake of argument you can only get a loan with 10% interest.
that $1000 warranty becomes a $1500 warranty over 5 years. and the first
3 years are covered anyway.

I was in a similar situation you're in right now. The longer you wait, the
less choice you have in color, etc. Hondas normally do not have many or any
factory options to choose from - only dealer options. I hear the '06
Accords will have some differences in body panels, etc - mainly cosmetic.

Have purchased used cars in the past and on the urging of others decided to
bite the bullet and buy new this time. You don't have to wonder/worry about
the previous maintenance or history on the vehicle - piece of mind.

I just picked up an '05 Accord LX 5-speed (had to have SOME fun driving!)
The finance mgr was trying to push many different warranties and oil change
options. I didn't take any of them. Salesman was excellent. Also found
out through a relative to call Geico - they automatically extend the
warranty to 100k miles/10 years on a new car. Not sure on the 10 year
part - might be 7 or something. I decided not to do the Geico thing - read
too many negative things about them, and am perfectly happy w/current auto
insurance.

I plan on keeping this car for a while and hopefully the Honda beancounters
didn't hurt this car! I think most problems will rear it's head within the
warranty period.

Differences between the LX and EX models - the EX adds the 6-disc in dash
changer, 16" alloy wheels, sunroof and 4-wheel disc brakes. Those are the
major differences. I would have loved those options but had to keep costs
down - hence the LX.

If you can, check the websites of your local Honda dealerships to see what
they currently have in stock. Go to different ones and see what the best
price you can negotiate with each one, and don't forget about the service
you're receiving. I'm more inclined to give my business to the non-pushy
salesman who might be a fifty bucks more than the greaseball salesman that I
don't trust/like. I was also shopping for about a month before I purchased,
so I had an advantage - I wasn't desperate.

Good luck!
-Dave

you're right, i haven't. but i've read ford, and it's practically
worthless. admittedly, ford is not honda. yet.

the fact still remains however that you would not be able to buy an
extended warranty if there was any statistical liklihood of you
benefitting from it!

Very true, but other priorities come first. If I didn't get them now I
doubt I'll add them later - unless an offer I can't refuse came along.

Precisely Dave. I totally agree with you. Just want to say THANK YOU
VERY MUCh too all of you who have so generously willed to help me out
with my car buying dilema!

Now since I am in the last part of my transactions, I put forth one
more question to you. I am getting a 2004 Accord EX (with navigation
and leather trim, dual power seats, 6 CD changer and all the other
standard features). The car currently has 17000 miles on it and I went
to see it today is in very good condition; immaculate really. It has
the standard three year honda warranty on it. The guy is willing to
part with it for 18500

What do you guys think of the deal? I also went to a couple of
dealerships today and they quoted me in the range of 23800 - 24600 for
a new '05 with the above-mentioned options but figured I am saving
close to 7000 buy getting it used.

Also lastly, what is the "premium sound" option that kbb.com offers
while checking car prices? And any idea if it came standard with a
2004 Accord EXL V4?

Thank you very much!

I would say grab it. You could get that much on a trade-in.

I know the EX is normally about 2k more than the LX, unless you start going
with the V6 option. I picked up an '05 LX 5-speed for a touch under 17k
(including destination charge but before tax and tags). They had a few of
these on the lot and probably needed to unload them quick with the '06
coming in soon. I normally get a car at least a few years old - however I'm
happy with my decision.

Good luck - the Accord is a great car!
