Well, knew this day would come. AOD finally went on me. But is it. Here's what
happened. Cruising on the highway in OD at 2K rpms, pedal all the sudden gets
soft on me (used to be a stiff pedal) and at the same time the tranny starts
slipping in OD. It would hold gear at cruising RPM..but any attempt to
accelerate would slip out of gear. So i back it into D to get it in 3rd gear. I
take the exit to get to my house. Come to stop..then go. Tranny slips in first
under mild or hard acceleration. The shift into 2nd is a sloppy slipping shift.
And there is no downshift. 3rd gear at 5MPH...floor it...and your still in 3rd.
Only way to downshift the tranny from 3rd is manually...or come to stop and
slip up to 3rd again.

Back in my driveway, i check the tranny fluid...fine, although I think it has
been leaking the past week or so. My pedal feels really light all the sudden.
Engine revs the same...but it takes less pedal effort. Could this have anything
to do with it. Maybe the downshift cable slipped off or something?

Well, car is goign away for the winter tomorrow. Driving it to my grandmother's
garage and putting it up for the winter. Maybe next weekend I'll take the AOD
out....and start getting the parts together for the 5-spd swap. I lucked
out...i have a friend at college who has dozens of Mustangs. Just stripped an
91LX for the engine and interior...has all the 5-spd parts (except tranny)
sitting there...i can get them for near nothing. ALl i'll need is the
transmission and i'm set.

Next time I drive my car...it will be a 5-spd

Oh yeah...my headlight bulb burned out too on the ride/limp home. Does my car
hate me or something today?

Hold your Horses Michael. I had the same symptoms from my car. got
real soft pedal. When I held down the pedal it would not shift then
fall into neutral. BUt it got real soft. DONT DRIVE THE CAR! tow,
push, pull it to your local reputable tranny shop. It is a little
bracket or connection type thing. Its plastic is in the engine Bay.
And cost me 25 bucks to have fix instead of the 1200 for a rebuild. I
talked to the guy over the phone and told him what type of car it was
he knew the problem without seeing the car. If you drive the car it
will ruin the tranny. They repaced the part with a metal replacement
and said it wont break any more. It is common in AOD's I guess.

Good Luck,
Let me know how it goes.

Ya know what? I think I know what you are talking about. I had a mechanic
friend point out this plastic piece in my engine compartment and warned me that
if it went...my tranny would go too. I'm hopeing it is it. I'll wait til
tomorrow during the day to take a look at it. It still doesn't change much. I'm
still putting it away for the winter and yanking the AOD. Only i hope that this
will allow me to sell and working AOD and gets some money back for it.

Thanks..i'll let ya know how it goes.

You mean full of fluid, and nice and clean...? No burnt smell or discolored
fluid...? You might want to pull the pan and look for metal shavings to get a
better diagnois.

Did you have a shift kit and an aftermarket trans cooler hooked up? Both of
these can help extend automatic transmission life.

A 5-speed can help shave off a good 6-8 tenths depending on whether you had any
mods (shift kit/convertor) done to your AOD.

Whoever suggested to take a look at the plastic piece in my engine compartment
was right!! the TV cable had become disconnected from the throttle body. After
consulting my chilton's manual, i had discovered the little grommet on the
throttle arm had become lost and there was nothing to clip the TV cable to. So
after a trip to pep boys, lappens, and auto zone, they told me it was a ford
only part. And once again, it reaffirms my belive that Pep Boys sucks!! ("hi, I
need a TV cable grommet." "No, that's a PCV valve grommet" No, that's a shift
selector cable." No, that's a....aww..gimme the damn computer I'll find it
myself!!)

Anyway, ford was closed and I only really needed to be able to drive the car to
it's final resting place next weekend for the winter. So I decided to Mickey
mouse something up. ANd ya know what? I think my design works better than the
OEM peice!!

Anyway, tranny is 100% back to normal. Thanks to Mach1man for remiding me to
even check that piece because I was ready to rip[ the AOD out and junk it. Now
i can still sell it as a working tranny when i take it out when I do my 5-spod
swap.

AOD was bone stock. I'm hoping the 5-spd swap and the 3.73's will help me get a
shot at 13's without any real major mods....of course, assuming once I learn to
drive stick really well.

If you were going to lock me in a cold garage for months I would have

Yeah, but what if you were gonna recieve a 5-spd over your slushbox AOD, a
brand new 130-amp alternator, headers and an h-pipe and MAYBE pullies and
electric fan? They she might be happier when i take her out in the spring.
Besides. I was forced to drive the car for one winter....and between the sudden
snow while i was at school, and the black ice, and the salt, and the chance of
some jerk sliding into my car where I park it...it's in a better place

I have a 1969 coupe with 351W and a race-prepped AOD. (Wife hates
standards.) In any event, my builder "replaced" the plastic area of which
you speak with hand-fabricated all metal components. While I don't pay
close attention, as you should only notice an AOD problem when they don't
work, the quality of shift is my indicator as to wwhether I need to take a
look.
