Thanks for any ideas or help.

**If your turntable doesn't have a phono preamp built in (some modern ones
do, some don't), then connect the TT to an amplifier, which has a phono
preamp (some do, some don't). Then connect the tape out to your computer
sound card and you're away.
Trevor Wilson
To add to that - if you are using a notebook for capture, you probably
will need to get another sound card (there are several affordable USB
devices that work well). Very few notebook sound cards have a line-in:
most only have a microphone jack which is mono only.
Generally this is not a problem with desktop computer sound cards.

Yes they do - my wife has a Mac Book that is a very nice machine. I do
like Macs quite a bit (I'm typing this on an old iMac that we've had for
years) but most of my professional life requires the use of Windows.
I haven't used the Mac for any audio capture, but I have used a Toshiba
notebook to record some vinyl. For that, I have to use a USB audio
device because the sound card only accepts a mono input.
But it works well, and I've got some pretty simple software on the
Toshiba that I like for doing the capture/CD burning and possible
cleanup of the captured files, though I often find I don't clean them
much.

My daughter has a Mac Notebook. It cost her about 3 times what a similar
Windows laptop would have cost her. She paid $100s more for a MacIntosh
extended warranty. When she had a problem with it, she had to send the whole
notebook out of town to be checked out. The repair facility said - hey
there's a tiny dent in corner of the case, the machine is therefore abused
and we won't honor the warranty.
I don't think she's buying another Mac real soon!

Not only does the laptop input only accept mono, it also has too much gain
because it is a microphone input.
The good news is that USB audio devices that equal or better any laptops
line input are readily available and relatively inexpensive. One to avoid
is called the iMic. One to look for is the Behringer UCA 202.

Well, that settles that!
Gee Jen, you're getting your role as the female Art Sack-o-crapman down so
well. Will the Middiot promote you to be his arch-idiot, and fuliminate

"Well, that settles that!"
very toxic words those are, "At least" as
toxic as "been there, done that" or
"pot, meet kettle"
so, I'll tone down the rhetoric a bit and
just say that your toilet needs a good

Too bad you messed up that reference to Stereophile, Arnii. You almost
had a perfect "debating trade" month notched. ;-)
Well Army, the advanced reader will discern that I'm mocking your

"Mocking" does not compute. Please rephrase using known vocabulary
units. My Handy-Dandy Port-a-Kroo Translation Deviceâ„¢ suggests the
following vocab units as replacements:
measuring
quantifying
debating
fuliminating

Very sorry to hear that - our experience over the years has been quite a
bit more positive with Apple products. Certainly they've been easily as
reliable as any of the other PC products I've owned, and usually have
been better built.
Though in all honesty I haven't had any warranty work done in a very
long time. Oh, wait, that's not entirely true. There was some issue with
my wife's Macbook that was a warranty item, but I think it was more of a
recall to replace something.
It was handled locally, quickly and quite professionally.
> I don't think she's buying another Mac real soon!
I don't blame her at all if that was her experience.

What a coincidence: that's the same device that I use for capture. It
works well, and is quite cheap. I didn't care very much for the capture
software it came with though (I think it's Nero), but there are lots of
choices there.

The even more advanced reader will discern that is what all the Middiot's
posse do.

I've got a MacBook Pro and the input is either stereo line level or optical.
Ok, now I'm just getting confused. Do I go with Instant Music, iMic,
or one of the other devices that's been talked about here?

I don't know what hardware you've got - if you would be so kind as to
list what computer you were planning on using, whether or not you've got
a turntable and so on it would be much easier to give advice.
--
Bill
Ok. I have a Dell PC and a tecnics turntable.
> Ok. I have a Dell PC and a tecnics turntable.
Sounds good - do you have a receiver with a phono input? If so, you
shouldn't need any additional hardware (other than appropriate cabling).
You should be able to play your records on the turntable and run a cable
from your tape out into the sound card on your Dell.
You may want to get some software that helps with the capture/cleanup of
the records. There are a number of options out there, some of them free.
One shareware product that is pretty easy to use is called Spin It
Again:
<http://www.acoustica.com/spinitagain/>
It's not the most spophisticated software available for this purpose,
but it's very easy and the simplicity appeals to me.
Good luck!

Bill
You are very helpful! Yes, I do have a receiver with a phono input.
that's what it's connected to now. So, I need to cable from the back
of the receiver to the computer. Into the microphone jack? But I
will have to have software to capture the songs, right? I'm such a
novice at this.
> You are very helpful! Yes, I do have a receiver with a phono input.
> that's what it's connected to now. So, I need to cable from the back

No - you should plug it into the line input on the sound card, not the
microphone jack.
> But I
> will have to have software to capture the songs, right? I'm such a
> novice at this.
I think you might be a good candidate for the software that I mentioned
above: http://www.acoustica.com/spinitagain/
The software has detailed instructions on hooking things up to your
computer and how to proceed with the recording. You can use the software
on a trial basis for 3 albums, after which you the software will cease
to work unless you buy it.
However, give it a try - I think you'll find that going through a couple
of albums will help you understand the process, after which you can
either buy the software or move on to something else.
The only thing that this software doesn't get quite right for me is the
song breaks on the albums. It's easy to go through after you've recorded
and set them correctly though, but it took me a couple of tries to
realize what was going on and to fix it.

Thank you very much! I will give all this a try and see what happens.

Sorry to disappoint, but I have no idea what the point of your rant was

As far as knowing what the Krooborg is, do you actually believe any of

DOH!
George, 2pid blew by "idiot" and "moron" months ago and crash-landed

Ya think? When human beings get what they want, they become satisfied

about you compare this well-known principle to your pal Krooger. You say

Somewhat true. I still find his way of dealing with the world to be

Yes Art, but the rest of Usenet laughs at you! They know that the Middiot
has turned RAO into a wasteland with your help. Besides, there's nobody but
about 6 sockpuppets to see you launch the pies.
Just curious, as I don't remember: Am I one of the sockpuppets, in your
eyes?
thanks for contradicting yourself, once again, in the pretzel logic
of your debating trade antics.
on one hand, when i launch a pie, "the rest of Usenet" laughs at me,
on the
other hand, only six sockpuppets are watching.
"At least you admit that you have no audience at all,
except for us six sockpuppets.
no way, arny had his eyes gouged out 8 years ago.
he is stumbling around blind.
What in the hell is going on here? I ask a simple question and the
conversation goes beserk. I do appreciate the help I was given but I
have no clue what the rest of this thread is all about.

Did you try reading the subject of the thread? That should help. The
only background info you need in addition to the subject is the
well-known fact that Scottie Witlessmongrel is a moron.
Lesbians by definition CANNOT be sockpuppets.

I don't know who is worse off. The sociopath or the buffoons who
like to push his buttons.

Much as dislike finding myself in the position of defending shhhh.
You need to get off the Shhhh and Arny are alike rationalization.
They're not even close.

It ain't to see who Arny pisses on next.

Hm. Yet you do this to "humilate" people. Yet there's nobody here.
Insanity is such a curious thing to observe.
> Who knows? Who cares? Who's left?
Based on your output for the past couple of days, the obvious answer
is you.

Do you mean to imply that 2pid's stupidity is an act designed to
"tweak my nose"?
I disagree. I think it's real.
God knows, I can only judge your actions.

That would be false.
What sockpuppets can't do is be smarter than the person who animates them.
Welcome to RAO!
Welcome to RAO.....where fully 90% of all posts are devoted to
the study of sociopathic behavior.
We have 2 subjects..Arny Kreuger (who occasionally also posts
about audio) and George Middius who never posts anything but
ridicule, either at Arny or those who don't see his point.
Arny does have a life, George apparently only exists on usenet.
Study of their interaction has proven addictive to some
and intellectually debilitating.
So your best advice is to ignore them and save your sanity.
