What Are 4 Out of 5 Broadcast Networks Doing That's SO Wrong?

Why this is marked as abuse? It has been marked as abuse.
Report not abuse
Looking at Tuesday's ratings, it continues to astound me how many
viewers a 10-year-old series like NCIS is pulling in, along with its
spin-off NCIS: LA and even Vegas, all on CBS. It's embarrassing to
the other networks and what they can barely muster - and then night
was all new, not a repeat in sight.

8:00 NCIS 21.5 million / 13.1 rating
That's about 5 million more viewes than what ABC, NBC, FOX and CW got
collectively and 2.5 rating points better over the other nets'
collective TOTAL. Not just embarrassing, but utterly humiliating. It
even won the hour in demos with a 3.7.

9:00 NCIS: LA 16.6 million / 10.2 rating
Even the spin-off easily topped the 8.4 collective total of ABC and
NBC and came in about just 1.5 under the opposing 4-net total. Still
an easy win and still snaring the 1st place demo title with a 3.1.

10:00 Vega 10.2 million / 6.6 rating
The weakest of the trio, but again it beat ABC's 7.9/5.3 for The
Bachelor and NBC's 4.1/2.8 for Smash's return. The demo win, however,
went to Bachelor with a 2.6. While the viewer count for Vegas did
better than any other show on the night by at least a couple of
million viewers, if not more, except for the NCIS twins, it's likely
still not good enough for CBS to think about renewing it for next
season.

So what's CBS doing that the other networks aren't that sees The Eye
far outdistancing the others and losing them in the ratings dust?
They're being what they're supposed to be - a "Broadcast" network, as
opposed to a niche or demo-friendly one. The others are also supposed
to be "Broad"casting and not nichecasting. Sure, their shows are
crap, but clearly they'll be the last network standing when the
downfall of broadcast TV really hits the fan.

CBS is succeeding in their business model as a broadcast network.
Quality has nothing to do with it. If you get quality, consider
yourself lucky. CBS used to carve out a good chunk of its schedule to
quality back in the Neanderthal days, but now it's just one seamless
crime procedural after another with nothing that changes in any of
them except the names of the characters along with a string of
indistinguishable faceless sitcoms with over-generated laugh machines
spiking what studio laughter is in them.

You're newsreader must be wonky.

YOU: So... their shows are crap... YET they get ratings and your
praising them for it? ? ? ?

ME: CBS is succeeding in their business model as a broadcast network.

Cluttering up the airwaves with excruciating so-called "reality" shows.

My reply wasn't at the very end because it was in the middle, replying
directly to what you said at that point. There shouldn't be any
quotes andr it all shouldn't come through as one long quote because
there aren't any at my end where everything is clearly partitioned as
to who said what and when and the reply was clearly partitioned too.

The only one I can handle, and not necessarily every week, is Person
of Interest. At least that one makes a token effort of straying away
from the standard CBS crime show formula and partially succeeds. All
else is boring or stupid and interchangeable with each other.

I get more laughs, and real ones, out of a single hour of Real Time
with Bill Maher than all those CBS sitcoms combined over a month.
Since the CSI/Survivor era began in 2000, the number of worthy shows
the network has aired I can count on one, maybe even two hands, and
most of them didn't last long. Sorry, I'm no cheerleader for the
network, but I can recognize they're doing an effective job of staying
in business and keeping an undemanding mass audience tuned in, without
having to be anal about the 18-49 demo, to a degree that none of the
other broadcast nets can hope at this point of ever achieving for
themselves again, because they all continue to be anal about the 18-49
demo, which is a losing demo to be focused on these days since they're
migrating elsewhere for escape because the broadcast nets are just
plain too old hat for them.
