DAYS' JONAH ARRIVES JUST IN THYME
DOOL Carver family has been on the storyline periphery for some
time. But now it is moving to the forefront -- partly because of
the return of Abe's younger brother, Jonah (Thyme Lewis).
Jonah is no stranger to Salem. He was on the show in 1987 (the
character was played then by Bumper Robinson) and was a friend of
Carrie's (Christie Clark). Last week, after hearing that Abe had
been shot, Jonah returned -- a victim of SORAS (soap opera rapid
aging syndrome), having aged from pre-teen to young adulthood in
the interim. Now a pre-med student, Jonah was skiing in Aspen
when he learned of Abe's shooting. He is slated for interaction
with Salem's younger set.
"Some really wild things are going to be happening for Jonah,"
says Lewis. "He knows almost everyone in town, so he'll probably
be involved in several storylines." What is Lewis' take on the
character? "Jonah is a good guy," he says. "Things come easily
for him, so he will definitely be successful in whatever he does.
He is a good ally to have -- as long as you're supportive of him.
But if you step in his way you'll definitely be contended with.
There is supposed to be a love interest for him in the future,
too."
The resurgence of the Carver family will add some ethnic
diversity to Salem. "It adds some spice and flavor to the show,"
Lewis says. "I am sure that will be appreciated by a wide
variety of people."
For the record, Lewis has his father to thank for his unique
first name, which is derived from "rhythm and time. My father,
who is a jazz drummer, put it together. The trick is the
pronunciation, because everyone wants to say thyme like the herb,
but it is Thyme with a 'th'" (as in think).

WEST COAST GOSSIP
The quote of the week comes from Drake Hogestyn who, after years
of being lost in a storyline vacuum, has been thrust into the
thick of things during the past few months, first with the plot
involving the on-screen death of his TV wife, Isabella, and now
with the resurgence of the Roman/Marlena/John triangle.
Describing his return to the front burner, Hogestyn says with a
laugh: "I feel like the fire ax to the armor and not just the
chink in it anymore."

STORYBOOK ENDING FOR DOUG AND JULIE
Susan Seaforth Hayes tells SOAP OPERA MAGAZINE her final days in
Salem were filled with "lots of hugs...lots of kisses...and lots
of flowers, gifts and warm wishes. It was a big emotional day."
Susan's husband Bill was equally moved by the cast's tribute.
"About 60 people gathered to watch our final scenes. It was very
loving and supportive." he says. "But Susan's been working for
30 years. I admit I'm happy now that she'll be available to
accompany me on my singing engagements that often take me around
the world."

NO, NO NAOMI!
While making a connecting flight through the Baltimore, MD,
airport, Suzanne Rogers (MAGGIE) was hit with a miserable stomach
flu. "My flight was canceled, I had to wait six hours for the
next one, and there was no where to lie down. Then an airline
employee approached me and asked, 'Are you Naomi Judd?' When I
said no, she insisted: 'Are you SURE?' My friends think you're
Naomi, too.' Heck, I would've tried to be anyone they wanted me
to be to get a place to rest. Luckily, another employee
recognized me as Maggie and I was ushered into a lounge to rest
until my flight."

ACHING TO WORK
Erik vonDetten (Nikki) periodically suffers from "NBC sickness,"
[Ed. Note: Gee....don't we all!!!] but it's not the show that
makes him ill [It is for me! ;-)]...it's school. The busy fourth
grader attends regular classes before heading for the studio,
where he works with a tutor. "Like most kids, he sometimes gives
me that early morning groan about going to school," explains his
mom Sue. "In his case, he does not say, 'Oh Mom, I have a tummy
ache,' but 'I've got NBC sickness,' meaning he would really
rather be at work."

REMEMBER WHEN
Four years ago....Eugene returned to Salem and stayed in the
Donovans' basement where he finished building a robot in the
likeness of Calliope. The real Calliope had no clue Eugene was
back, not even when she ran into his pet penguin. Eugene's evil
competitor, Mr. Balboni, tried to steal the robot but mistakenly
abducted Calliope. When Eugene tried to rescue her, he was also
taken captive. While being held by Balboni, Eugene and Calliope
made love. Eugene cleverly used his robot to free them, and then
he left Salem. Poor Calliope was all alone once more.

A GREAT LOVE STORY FROM THE PAST....DAY'S PATCH AND KAYLA:
The love story of DAYS' Kayla Brady and Steven "Patch" Johnson
was so unique, so spellbinding, so special that no other couple
ever came close to the appeal this star-crossed pair had for
their fans.
Kayla's brother Bo and Steve had been best friends, but their
friendship ended violently when they had a knife fight over a
woman, and Bo blinded Steve in one eye. Years later, Kayla had
moved to Cleveland, and Steve - now called Patch - was sent to
scare her back to Salem. He intimidated her with nuisance calls,
then broke into her apartment and ransacked it, even hiding in a
closet to watch her reaction. When Patch saw Kayla, however, he
was ashamed of what he had done.
But Kayla did move back to Salem, where she found herself drawn
to the shady Patch. Bo warned her Patch was no good, but Kayla
sensed another side to him. When Patch was hurt in a fight,
Kayla forced him to let her take care of him. She removed his
eyepatch to clean his wounds, and her act destroyed Steve's
defenses.
But up-and-coming politician Jack Deveraux, who had once dated
Kayla, came between them. To give Jack a reason to live when he
became ill with Hodgkin's disease, Kayla let him believe she
cared for him. At the same time, Patch discovered Jack was
actually his brother Billy. The boys had been given up for
adoption as infants. On his deathbed, Jack asked Kayla to marry
him. Because Patch knew Jack was his brother, he convinced Kayla
to agree without telling her why. Kay and Jack married, and,
amazingly, Jack recovered.
But when the moment came to consummate the marriage, Kayla
couldn't go through with it. Eventually, the jealous Jack raped
her, claiming he had the right because she was his wife. When
Patch learned about the rape, he and Jack had a terrible fight,
and Jack was so severely injured he needed a kidney transplant to
survive. Only when Patch turned out to be a perfect match did
Jack finally learn his real identity.
After Jack recovered, he pled guilty to raping Kayla, and the
marriage was dissolved - but Jack's adoptive father Harper
Deveraux wanted revenge. No one suspected Harper was the Salem
Knifer, a killer preying on women he judged as "fallen." Harper
attacked Kayla at the Youth Center; and although she escaped, the
boiler in the center's basement exploded and left her deaf and
mute. Delicate ear surgery offered a chance for a normal life,
and Patch encouraged her by planning their wedding.
On a perfect July afternoon, Patch and Kayla married on a yacht
in Salem harbor where, in a miraculous moment Kayla looked up
into Patch's loving face and spoke her vows - aloud. They
honeymooned in the Orient, and when they returned, marriage only
increased their love.
Patch began working on ISA missions, including one in which,
through the wonders of plastic surgery and a prosthetic eye, his
face was perfectly repaired. But the new look was short-lived
when Marina, a mysterious woman from Patch's past, turned up
claiming she was his wife. Coerced into helping Marina, Patch
went to Italy where, in a bar fight, he again lost an eye.
When he returned to Salem, Patch confessed everything to Kayla,
but - wounded by his betrayal and with serious doubts about their
future together - Kayla didn't tell Patch she was pregnant.
After Marina was murdered, Kayla was charged with the crime and
wound up giving birth mid-trial. The joy of her new baby
Stephanie was dimmed when Kayla was falsely convicted of murder;
she was released from prison only when Isabella remembered what
had happened between her and Marina.
In the end, Patch's adventurous nature was his undoing. Involved
in a case with Bo and Shane, he was trapped in an explosion and
lay in a coma for weeks. At one point, he seemed to be emerging
from the coma, but someone slipped a deadly poison into his I>V>
When Kayla returned to his bedside, he was dead.
Still, the mysteries surrounding Patch' life were not over:
After the funeral, his coffin was switched with another and the
real Patch was never buried.
That was the end of a great, abiding love story, and in many ways
the end of an era on DAYS. No other love has ever touched the
hearts of millions quite the way Patch and Kayla's did. And some
say none ever will.

WILL DAYS' CARLY EVER REUNITE WITH LAWRENCE FOR NIKKI'S SAKE?
According to co-headwriter Jim Reilly: "Carly has guilt that she
wasn't there for Nikki even though it wasn't her fault. Nikki
could be the instrument for weakening Carly's previous animosity
for Lawrence."
But does that weakening automatically translate into a
willingness to give up her one great love Bo? "She's not that
desperate," says Carly's off-screen alter ego Crystal Chappell.
"She's willing and smart enough to have her son and her lover Bo
in her life."
But according to Michael Sabatino, who brings the evil Lawrence
to life, a changed Lawrence could spell trouble for a Bo and
Carly reunion. "Lawrence is capable of creating the illusion
that he is a changed man. I'm sure that he could chameleon his
way into being the type of character that would attract Carly
temporarily."
"It comes down to Lawrence's manipulation of her and power over
her," agrees Chappell. "If Lawrence can show her a different
side of himself, who knows what could happen?"
As with anything, the writer has the last word. And Reilly's
words answer our question pretty succinctly: "Carly loves Bo.
She wants to marry Bo. Right now her main drive is to get Nikki
to accept her as his mother and to work out the predicament of
Lisanne's death. By working out these tow things, she hopes to
be able to explain everything to Bo so that the two of them can
be reunited."

AND FROM OUR OWN LIZ FOX...
I'm outraged by the lack of intelligence and compassion shown by
Ken Corday and the DAYS production staff. Letting a wonderful,
charming and TALENTED actress such as Susan Seaforth Hayes go is
a tragedy. Ken says, "NO storyline," What about with Victor?
They were magic together. And Julie was an integral part of the
Horton family that is slowly eroding. I understand DAYS' new
head writer James Reilly wouldn't give her a chance at a
storyline because she's "too old." If that's true, will Frances
reid and Macdonald Carey be next on the chopping block? I'd much
rather see an intimate love scene between Julie and Victor than
one with Carly, Bo, Austin, Billie, Tim or any of the 90210
ballistics crew. The writers and producers seem to think that a
younger audience is a BETTER audience. I hate to disagree, but
I'm 34 years old with a viable income and a consumer of the
products advertised on DAYS. My next letter is to the sponsors
telling them I will no longer purchase their products until
things change.
The reply from the Editors: Change is never easy, and venting
your anger in a letter is a great way to get the producer's
attention. Want to see DAYS change? Encourage your friends to
write as well. [Like anyone in this group needs encouragement.
Way to go, Big B!!!!]
