There's been a lot going on, and more to come, so these will be brief
and to the point....

The first draft for the script to World War Z has been turned in and
has met with a *very* positive reaction. I'm making my final
revisions now and should turn in the second draft by the 23rd or so.

The B5 DVD has been fully delivered to WB along with finals on all of
the director's blogs, the interviews, and fireside chats. I'd expect
to see them online in a few weeks, one at a time.

"Changeling" continues unabated toward production in the fall. I'm
looking forward to meeting Clint Eastwood soon, once he returns from
vacation.

Having finished WWZ and David, there are at present five other feature
projects in front of me which I'll be choosing between over the next
few weeks: one based on a mainstream historical novel by a pulitzer
prize winning author, another historical work, a very well known
Marvel comics character, a sequel to a classic mainstream mystery
film, and a movie based on a massively influential series of SF
novels. Which of those goes first will depend on the deals now being
put together. Suffice to say I've found myself in rather stunning
company of late.

Expect several major announcements at San Diego Comic Con in addition
to all the stuff already discussed.

One of the projects I can't talk about yet is taking me to London in
early May for a week, and shortly afterward, Berlin. While I'm there,
I'll also use the time to have meetings at the BBC, Channel 4 and
elsewhere, and may try to work in a signing somewhere.

Finally, volume 11 of the script books is about to come out, and I
wanted to let folks know that there won't be any photos or memos in
this volume (well, one memo) because this covers the insane period
between the end of the fourth season and the beginnings of the fifth
season...all of the fireworks, all the twists and turns, much of it
never before revealed in detail, day by day, hour by hour, and in
order to cover all that the introduction/commentary section turned
into the longest one to date, and not by just a little. It's almost
23,000 words long, covering over 70 pages. If you want the skinny on
what happened during those explosive months, this is the definitive
last word on the subject.

Also, because these books are being written in chronological fashion
following the history of the show year by year, we decided to move
Sleeping in Light into this volume...so you get Deconstruction,
Sleeping in Light, and the season 5 debut, No Compromises, and four
others.

The one thing I can promise is that folks are going to be talking
about this volume for a very, very long time...and many things not
previously understood or debated about will be set to rights and
explained, once and for all.

I just made remembered an info about the possibility of a new Dune movie
being made...

Glad things continue to pop for you, JMS. Hope you're enjoying it.

Garrr. Any time I hear something like this, my heart leaps in hope of a
respectful adaption of the "Lensman" series. Honestly, something that's sown
the seeds for everything from the Green Lantern Corps. to Vorlons, I'm
surprised nothing's happened with this series beyond the anime of years

It wouldn't be "play in" as in creating an original story, that would
probably be too much legal headaches for all parties. More likely a
screen adaptation of one or more stories already published by the
series author.

Oh, I didn't realize it was already written.

I just looked it up at imdb... and it looks like a "character based on
the Marvel comic book" rather than an actual screen rendition. The
Iron Man +I+ remember from when I read the comics in the '80s didn't
build the suit for life support, he built the original suit as a heavy
construction tool! He only started using it to fight crime after some
bad guys stole it to commit crimes.

Actually he (Stark) originally built it while in a Vietnam prison camp

When he escaped and got back to America is when he built the Red and

You could always give the soprano singing Aline some, er, "brew of
your vicar"... what's the recipe again? Three spoons to the pot?

I was in a production a few years ago where the director decided that
Wells had managed to play a trick and switch places with Alexis AFTER
his "descent". I suppose it's one way to give the show a happy ending.
the same director also had Jack Point running after Col. Fairfax with
a knife and then falling on it at the end of Yeomen of the Guard. I
guess everybody has bad ideas sometimes...

Joe, you don't want to jump on a train at Euston after the signing,

the ticket.

Details of the performances can be found here.

Amy: The Diving Diva accolade was presented to me a few years ago.
Basically it is someone who is in the chorus, but when coming on stage
'dives' to be at the front. I don't deliberately upstage anyone, but I
don't mind overacting, and am usually one of the first on stage. Also,
I'm usually at the front in dance routines because I learn the steps
quite quickly and the others behind follow me.

Richard: I am not going to knobble Aline, because she is a lovely
person who I don't mind being beaten by.

Yep; this would be the book she agreed to after Jim Baen passed away. (Also
agreeing to continue their most famous series in honor of Jim were David Weber,
Eric Flint, and John Ringo, if memory serves.)

I know it would be too good to be true, but if anyone could make the

Any plans for future "Babylon 5: The Lost Tales" episodes touching
upon/intersecting with The Telepath War (maybe as a teaser of sorts?),
or is the teep war currently being saved for something else?

Not so big, but definatly the right shop for this. SciFi, fantasy,
english books.
Just mailed with the owners, BIG B5-Fans... They are not selling
anything made by JMS, but would be willing to host a signing anyway.

http://www.thalia.de/
15 shops in Berlin alone, definatly big enough.
But a search in the online shop shows most of the stuff by JMS is sold
out and will not be reprinted in germany... Where is the logic in that?
:-(

Looks like there is not much made by jms for sale in germany (well,
translated to german) except for Babylon5 and the comic-books.

Would be wonderful. But would Hollywood go for it, given the failure
of the original travesty? And can the novel actually be made into a
successful film, as opposed to a reasonably decent mini-series?

BTW, since several people have asked regarding the Forbidden Planet
signing, yes, I do sign whatever is put in front of me whenever and
wherever it was bought. The only new rule I'm starting gradually and
reluctantly to apply is a maximum of ten items, only because the
carpal tunnel thing is really cutting into the duration of the
signings. This will also cut down a bit on the dealers who come in
with stacks of books fifty high or more then resell them, meanwhile
making those who've come with just a few things have to wait until
they're done.

So, do what Harlan Ellison has oft done in the past with such a situation.
Announce that folks with one or two items will get their stuff signed
in order, and that folks with many items, up to the limit, will only
get theirs signed after that.

That way, the relatively few folks with many items will not clog up the
venue, either, and those who brought light will be rewarded for their
lightness of load, while those with many will learn that patience is
a virtue.

FWIW, this did happen to me at an Ellison signing, where, due to not
only my own books, but due to carrying several for friends, I was the
guy with the most items, so I got to wait to the very end. It was fine.

At comic conventions it's not always easy to tell who the dealers are from the
collectors because they all tend to have boxes of comics with them. At venues
where JMS appears regularly, such as Comic Con in San Diego, it's more likely
that the 'box' people are dealers, though not always by any means. Last year at
Heroes Con in Charlotte, quite a few people were simply collectors who brought
every comic that JMS had written - and that's a LOT - because it wasn't a show
or area of the country where JMS has been any time recently.

Still, when you get into a line that ends up stretching the better part of a
city block, you know you're going to be there for some time so you generally
relax and have a good time talking to the others in line with you. JMS keeps
the line moving, too, which is always a big help.

So, no, not much in the way of dirty looks at all that I've noticed. Even the
big cons are generally pretty relaxed.

Anybody who gets in line with a box of stuff to be signed is clearly
pushing it, dealer or not.

I've been in lines like that, back in the late 80's when I used to go to
Trek cons and Michael Dorn (Worf from TNG) was signing. I was *amazed*
at how gracious he was. He signed everybody's items and only stopped
when *all* of the people in line made it through. Prior to this, I'd
been lines that were a city block long, and by the time I got within
sight of the actor or writer, they quit and left, and I didn't get
*anything* signed, sometimes after spending an hour in line.

IMHO, getting into line with a box of stuff and wanting JMS to sign more
than a few items, is inconsiderate to both JMS, and to the rest of the
people in line. How would these people like to sign their name
thousands of times? They should put themselves in JMS's place.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. The entire box likely wasn't for JMS to
sign, but holds the comics they wanted signed by various comics folks during the
con.

Then those cons were badly run. Most times if there are time constraints, it's
up to the con to cut off the line at a point where the celeb will need to leave.
More often than not, JMS has remained until the line is entirely gone, even
those he made go through again because of the number if items they had.
Naturally, this depends on the amount of time he's got available.

Perhaps, but put yourself in their place, too. Many of them have been fans
since "The Real Ghostbusters" or before and they want to express their
admiration. This may be the only shot they'll ever have. The time they have to
do that is dictated by how long JMS takes to sign whatever they've brought. Not
that he hurries people, that's just kind of the way things are.

There's a difference in the interraction I've seen between fans with media stars
and fans with writers or artists. For the actors, people will express their
admiration and sometimes recount a favorite scene or show. For the writers and
artists, people are trying to express what that person's work has meant to them
on a personal and emotional level. There's an attempt at communication that's
far deeper but still needs to be expressed under a certain amount of pressure.
For a lot of them, the personal contact is much more meaningful than the items
signed except that the items they choose may be emblematic of the way the work
has touched them.

The amount of time each person takes with JMS is one issue, but the
other is how many times he signs that day. Good grief, I remember how
many times I had to sign my name when I opened an IRA back in the 80's,
and that was a walk in the park compared to some of these con. signings.

A bunch of years ago I went to a scifi megamart swap meet thingy in
Boston. One of the main attractions was star signings. Ray Parks
canceled out with zero notice, Jason Carter was courteous, and Wortham
Krimmer was a jerk.

I would suspect Krimmer would be a jerk. Look at the character he
played. Cartagia the Mad.

Remember that you have no idea _why_ Park cancelled "with zero notice." A
few years ago, Jan was kind enough to bring something for me to the Richard
Biggs memorial 'convention' (really a one-day affair) for Andreas to sign,
and he didn't show up -- with no notice. Lack of courtesy for the fans was
very much _not_ his style, nor was he known for being undependable. And
particularly because of the nature of the event, I was really, really
concerned when Jan told me. But I never heard anything afterward from any of
the usual 'grapevine sources' about why he'd cancelled, and so I figured,
people have things come up at the last minute, I'm sure it was something
important he had to do.

Looking back after he died, I realized that the event was fairly soon after
he was diagnosed with lung cancer, so it's very likely that he was somewhere
getting treatment or tests or something else related that day. Or he just
wasn't up to it.

I'm just saying you shouldn't necessarily judge someone too harshly --
whether the celebrity _or_ the con staff -- when a guest doesn't show at the
last minute. I'm sure every one of us hasn't shown up someplace we were
expected, with little notice, because of some emergency or other.

That's just silly. Krimmer also played a saccharine-sweet, ultra-moralistic,
everybody-loved-him clergyman on One Life to Live for _many_ years, much
longer than he played Cartagia. That's like saying that Andreas was a bad
guy because he so often played terrorists, mafiosos or thugs.

So I'm going to have to wait to get my copies of 'Othersyde', 'Demon
Night', and 'Delicate Creatures' signed. (Got all three off Ebay one
time)

Oww! I have recurring tendonitis that can be very painful, so you have
my sympathies.

I have a friend who mans second-hand book stalls at fetes. He
recognises the local commercial bookstall owners as they walk up and
immediately doubles the prices.

I won't be waiting as I'll be singing as you're signing. Please come
back soon!

Riiiight.

So on that basis, I guess Walter Koenig must be downright evil, yes?
Would you expect him to hollow out your mind with a single thought if
you asked for his signature?

Or would Ed Wasser only give you his signature in return for you owing
him a...favour?

Well, about Ray Park... was that around the time that Lucas slapped Park
with a "Cease and Desist" order because he was signing "Darth Maul" under
his own signature? I remember he got very disgusted around that time, saying
it was ridiculous that he couldn't at least do that for his fans. (Just so
people who saw the photo would actually KNOW who he was without all that
makeup)

If we stick to awards given then Foundation getting the Hugo for best
All-Time Series and Lensman being the runner-up (according to Wiki) sure
makes them sound like the most likely.

I don't know. All I know is that he was the top-billed celeb for the
event and he never showed up. Fortunately for me, I wasn't there for
him anyway... :) I was there to get an autograph from Jason Carter,
and to see if I could find any B5 stuff. I had this idea of making an
EA uniform, so I was looking for EA patches, pins, and other uniform
trinkets.

Amen. I mean, Park did an AMAZING job with the Darth Maul character, his
physicality and facial expressions just conveyed raw, seething malice in
every frame. And what's the poor guy's reward for taking on the role of what
was supposed to be the next "Star Wars" bad-ass and doing so brilliantly? He
gets most of his lines cut from the film, the 2 or 3 he has left are then
redubbed by someone else, and then to add insult to injury, Lucas won't even
let the guy sign his character's name to his picture so people would know
who he played! It's like he's trying to take away all the credit Park
deserves for the things he brought to the character.

Then again, I've always though Lucas went off his nut somewhere before
'Jedi' anyway, when he started to think more in terms of merchandising than
story.

Well,

unfortunately it would appear that nobody had success with trying to
get a signing in Berlin organized. It's a pity that obviously no
fitting place could be found in the capital; or maybe those people
trying to find one weren't persistent enough. I envy you people in the
UK. Very much so.

Well, that just means I will have to try getting Mr Straczynski's
"squiggly line" another way before either he or I die...I could ask I
could for his hotel address in Berlin, but I guess something bad would
happen to me if I did so. I hope his business here guess well.

Un-related: I just finished watching the fifth season. It's been well
over eight years since I first saw it, and some episodes I haven't re-
watched since then. They are very good, for the most part.

Have a nice day/evening, everyone!
