MUMBAI -- Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging and India's Prasad Corp
have formed a strategic alliance intended to provide digital post production
and restoration services to Indian, Hollywood and int'l film companies.

Restoration in India has already begun on triple Oscar winning 1962
romancer "How the West was won," which was originally shot in Cinerama.

Companies will pool resources, skills and capacity and build a
dedicated high speed line between them enabling speedy transfer of content
between the Burbank and Chennai facilities.

Hollywood firms are increasingly attracted by India's technical
capacities. Country, which is a growing entertainment market, is also seen
as a global IT sector leader and boasts labor costs a fraction of those in
the U.S. Earlier this year Sony acquired a majority stake in another Chennai
company FrameFlow, which it will integrate into its Sony Pictures Imageworks
unit (Variety, Feb 21, 2007.) Although Indian films rarely boast high
quality effects companies such as Eros Entertainment is investing $5 million
in Eyeqube Studios, a start-up Indian visual effects company with
multi-Emmy-winner Charles Darby.

"We have an extensive set of tools for post production and restoration
that we can apply to our various project and the Prasad facility can handle
standard def, 2K and 4K and it shares our own commitment to excellence,"
Chuck Dages, executive VP, emerging technology, Warner Bros. Technical
Operations, said. "In addition to bringing our combined skills to each other's
projects, the time difference between the two companies will allow us to
work on projects twenty four hours a day."

"This (alliance) is going to enable us to share their considerable
knowledge and experience from the global market and will enable us to add
considerable value," Sai Prasad of Prasad, said.

Prasad Corporation is a member of the 50 year old Prasad Group which
is the largest post production services provider in Indi and introduced use
of digital intermediates to India.

At least the project is still alive.

Does Marty H have any insider updates he can share with us?

"How The West Was Won" is a MAJOR project requiring lots of optical work
to get the best panel matching possible. (Cinerama's special projection
lenses can't help a digital transfer.) Warner's is very much dedicated
to making this a most desireable and very unusual video release. It
looks like we're going to get the film in both "flat" anamorphic and
genuine Cinerama sanctioned "Smilebox" anamorphic.

Originally scheduled to hit the streets next August, it may be closer to
December for all the work to be finished. If it comes off as planned it
will be worth the wait.

Frankly, I don't know. But considering the money and time being expended
I think you're apt to see it in HI-DEF as well as conventional DVD.
You'll want to see it for certain.

I hear they're going to really spiff up the soundtrack, with lots of
great 5.1 effects added, along with plenty of Bangra music. And
then, they're editing in some great new dance scenes.

You'll love the Brahma Bull stampede through the Taj Mahal filmed in Ultra
Panavision!

There's also a runaway white water rafting rapid shoot down the Ganges!

Don't miss the New Delhi Express train being chased by Eli Wallach and his

For those of us who would like to have both a "flat" and smilebox
version it probably won't hurt to send an e-mail to Warners promoting
both versions.

I, personally, would like to see both titles sold as SEPARATE items. That
way each title gets all the media real estate it needs for mastering and
extras, and nothing has to get compromised or left out due to lack of space
or cost.

Judging from the way WHV has treated such films as "Ben-Hur" in home
video release, it's probably a good bet that you're going to get good
quality in everything. Now let's get back to the rape job that Fox did
on "Oklahoma!".
