On IFWiki, there's a list of IF clichés, with some interesting
comments on how acceptable they are.
Here's one:
The player must solve a puzzle that really has no business being in
the story, and is probably laughably puzzle-like (like a chess
problem) except to guard access to some necessary item.
Often, were the puzzle real it would probably have required far more
effort and knowhow to have constructed than likely considering the
importance of the item guarded, or that the makers would have been
able to offer. (Ancient tombs are notorious for this.) If they
really wanted to prevent people from obtaining the object, why could
they not just put it in a really strong box and keep the key miles
away, or just destroy the thing and be done with it?

On the other hand, those puzzles are in a way a staple of IF. (Which
doesn't mean I don't hate tem either.)
