Can't say I'm all that bothered whether Amblin mess around with
established continuity - the Beeb version is so erratic there's
absolutely nothing they could innovate you couldn't work in
somehow.

However, starting at the very beginning presents a far more
significant problem. The Doctor's main strength - and, I think,
main appeal - is his centuries long experience and wisdom. He
knows everyone, has been everywhere. Like Sherlock Holmes, like
James Bond, he's a veteran. You really want to see 007 on his
first date? Nobody did want to see Sherlock as a kid. The
Doctor at the very start of his travels simply won't be the
Doctor yet. He needs - you might say - time.
