Can someone tell me what kind of animal Goofy is? He can't be a dog, cos
Pluto is a dog, and walks on 4 legs not two, and carries things with his
tail, not his hands (feet?) He can't be a horse cos he's been seen riding
horses, also 4 legged animals unlike Goofy. So what is he?

Well Goofy is a Dog.

He has the Head of the Dog and Body of a human being.
That looked like an anthropomorphic dog.

He is a dog the same way Mickey is a mouse. They both walk on 2 feet &
wear clothes. If you need proof, Goofy's original name was Dippy Dawg.

And upon changing it, Goofy became the only original major Disney character
lacking an alliterative name (ie Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Pluto the Pup,
Horace Horsecollar, Clarabelle Cow, etc).

Peg Leg Pete is a cat, after all -- but so is Figaro!

Yes but Mickey doesnt have a pet mouse! but Goofy could percievably look at
Pluto as a pet!!!
And why does Pluto, also a dog walk on 4 feet, can't talk, can't hold things
in his hands, can't ride horses, and live in a kennel, whilst Goofy lives in
a house and even wears clothes. I think like Michael that he may have the
head of a dog, but the body of a human. My 11 year old son is seriously
bemused by the idea that 2 of the same species could act so differently. I
know when Goofy came out he was called Dippy Dawg, but this was dropped very
quickly in favour of The Goof and no mention ever given to what he is again.
Also he's never called Goofy Dog, like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck etc. all
very strange!!!

Repeat to yourself: It's just a cartoon. You should really just relax.

I voted, but you don't have my favorites listed:
For Pete's Sake
Lethal Goofin'
Major Goof
and whichever episode was the one where Pete was conned into buying a lunch
van and hopelessly (with Goofy's help) tries to make a profit out of it.
(It's the one with the chicken and cow.)

Except once, The Wonderful World of Color did an episode on the history of
Goofy and in an animated sequence they had the Disney brass change his name as
it "stank."

As to the whole thing,I agree, who cares?

But I can put Lethal Goofin' and Major Goof after the Current Poll is over.

"Funny animal" universes, with only one exception I know of, contain
both animals as we know them (wild animals, farm animals, pets like
Pluto) and walking, talking, clothed animals who take the place of
humans and are the "people" of that world. Naturally, the cartoonist can
do as he likes, but that is the norm.

In such a universe, there are four-footed dogs, cats, mice, etc., &
people who are dogs, cats, mice, etc. Goofy doesn't own a dog, but he
can go out and buy one. In Goof Troop he owns a cat & his neighbor pete,
a cat, owns a dog.

Other examples:

Horace is a horse and friend of Mickey, but Mickey rides a horse in
Two-Gun Mickey.

Clarabelle is a cow, but Mickey is chased by a bull in Mickey's Rival.

Mickey is a mouse, but he uses his bravery potion on a mouse in a
cartoon whose title I forget.

Pete is a cat, but he says he owned a cat in Mr. Mouse Takes a Trip.

The Beagle Boys are dogs. If they can interact with Mickey, the owner of
Pluto, why can't Goofy be a dog & interact with the owner of Pluto?

No no!
Keep it up.
A lot of us (knowing they are just cartoons) get amused at these
thoughts you bring up.
The writers must have had an excellent reason for doing what they did
back when Gofy was created and later renamed.
Since cartoons often reflect current culture there may have been
something culturally significant going on at the time.
This might make an interesting college thesis.
I look forward to anyone else's opinion on this.
