May was a big month for DC Comics, seeing both the conclusion of the publisher's
wildly successful INFINITE CRISIS series and the first four issues of its
successor in terms of marketing attention, the year-long weekly title 52. Other
new launches from DC in May were the limited series CRISIS AFTERMATH: SPECTRE
and SECRET SIX, as well as the ongoing SHADOWPACT book. Via its Vertigo and
WildStorm imprints, DC launched... nothing at all, actually, which hasn't
happened in a while.

Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures.

An overview of ICv2.com's estimates can be found here:

DISCLAIMERS

The numbers below are estimates for actual comic book sales in the North
American direct market, as calculated by www.ICv2.com according to the chart and
index information provided by Diamond Distributors.

ICv2.com's estimates are traditionally known to be somewhat lower than the
"actual" actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the
trends they show should be accurate.

If additional copies of an issue appeared on the chart after the issue's initial
month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in parenthesis
behind those issues (e.g. "[36,599]").

Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of
the long-term comparisons, the average will be used.

The titles released under the Johnny DC imprint and Mad Magazine mostly sell
through channels other than the direct market, so direct market sales don't tell
us much about their performance.

(2) INFINITE CRISIS
10/2005: Infinite Crisis #1 (of 7) -- 249,265 -- [270,127]
11/2005: Infinite Crisis #2 (of 7) -- 207,564 (-16.7%) -- [225,621]
12/2005: Infinite Crisis #3 (of 7) -- 188,853 (- 9.0%) -- [218,855]

03/2006: Infinite Crisis #5 (of 7) -- 201,855 (+10.5%) -- [205,133]
04/2006: Infinite Crisis #6 (of 7) -- 194,431 (- 3.7%) -- [206,614]
05/2006: Infinite Crisis #7 (of 7) -- 198,442 (+ 2.1%)

6 months: -4.4%

DC's major sales juggernaut keeps up its remarkable numbers for the final issue.
Judging from the total number of units sold of the previous issues (#6 shifted
another 12,183 copies in May), it's now safe to say that the limited series
broke the 200K barrier with every single one of its seven issues.

Suffice it to say, it's a spectacular success, and it's one that's unprecedented
in the direct market since the time we have consistent sales data.

(3) ALL-STAR BATMAN & ROBIN, THE BOY WONDER
07/2005: All-Star Batman & Robin, the Boy Wonder #1 -- 261,046 --
[306,976]

6 months: n.a.

Having merrily chopped away 100,000 units since issue #1, it seems retailers are
finally caught up with reality now. It's not too harsh a reality, of course,
but in direct comparison with INFINITE CRISIS, it's obvious that ALL-STAR BATMAN
didn't catch on quite as spectacularly, despite the name recognition of writer
Frank Miller and penciler Jim Lee. The book's mixed reception, its abandonment
of anything resembling a regular schedule and the publisher's failure to
communicate a clear purpose of the All-Star line of titles may all be reasons
for the decline.

Still, if it continues to sell around 160,000 units a month, ALL-STAR BATMAN can
hardly be viewed as a failure; it seems more like a missed opportunity, really.

For the record, ALL-STAR BATMAN #1's estimated 261,046 units from July 2005
remain in place as the direct market's current ceiling, where first-month sales
are concerned, although CIVIL WAR #1 came very close with an estimated 260,804
copies sold in May 2006.

(4/6/7/9) 52
05/2006: 52 Week 1 -- 140,971
05/2006: 52 Week 2 -- 128,393 (-8.9%)
05/2006: 52 Week 3 -- 123,982 (-3.4%)
05/2006: 52 Week 4 -- 121,440 (-2.1%)

This is, no doubt, a surprisingly strong start for DC's new 52-part "event"
series, but there are a couple of unique factors that apply.

First up, given that 52 is a weekly series, it could take anywhere between ten
and 20 issues for sales to catch up with actual customer demand, rather than the
usual three to five. And that's only because DC Comics, in a unique move,
followed Marvel's policy of setting a so-called "final order cut-off" date for
this book, basically allowing retailers to adjust their orders until the last
possible moment before the books go to the printer.

Second, it should be pointed out that DC, contrary to the usual direct market
practice, also tries to accomodate retailers by making the first twelve issues
of 52 returnable, as long as they ordered a particular quantity determined by
the publisher. So, at least theoretically, this means that a number of the
copies of those issues shipped to retailers may be returned at a later date, and
that the sales for 52 Weeks 1-12 may be inflated through retailers ordering more
copies than they might have, in order to qualify for their stock to be
returnable.

That's "theoretically," mind you, since, according to all accounts, the book
seems to be selling well at the retail stores. Still, in terms of its direct
market performance, this is a very interesting book to watch, because retailers
will have to have ordered a lot more issues than usual before they can make an
educated guess regarding the demand for the book.

(10/11) SUPERMAN/BATMAN

Two issues of SUPERMAN/BATMAN were released in May: Issue #25 was the official
conclusion of Jeph Loeb's run on the title, while #26 was a higher-priced "jam"
issue, co-written by the late Sam Loeb and completed by a plethora of creators.
Given that the list includes high-profile names like Jeph Loeb, Joss Whedon,
Geoff Johns, John Cassaday, Joe Madureira, Jim Lee and Michael Turner, the
increase shouldn't come as a great surprise.

The two-year comparison is with the Supergirl storyline, by the way, which was
illustrated by Michael Turner and enjoyed highly elevated sales. Overall, it's
been a very successful, rock-solid run for the book.

(12) SUPERGIRL
08/2005: Supergirl #1 -- 123,370 -- [165,579]
09/2005: Supergirl #2 -- 101,681 (-17.6%) -- [114,058]

The first issue not by Jeph Loeb and Ian Churchill maintains the book's
impressive sales level. This may be deceiving, however, for a number of
reasons.

For starters, SUPERGIRL #6 was first solicited for February as the final issue
of the Jeph Loeb/Ian Churchill run. Due to a change of plans, Loeb's final
issue ended upm being #5, however. Next up, SUPERGIRL #7 was solicited for
March as the first issue written by Rucka and with Ian Churchill as the artist;
all orders for issue #7 were then canceled and the book was solicited once more,
now for an April release, still with Churchill's name attached. When the
beginning of Rucka's supposed tenure (now SUPERGIRL #6, instead of #7) finally
shipped in May, though, Ed Benes had replaced Churchill as the penciler.

By the time SUPERGIRL #6 appeared, however, it was clear that Rucka was unable
to continue writing the book, and that Joe Kelly was to take over as the new
regular writer. Currently, DC's website lists both SUPERGIRL #7 and #8 for the
week of July 5, which seems rather optimistic. Issue #8 was originally
solicited for May with Rucka and Benes as the creative team; then resolicited
for June, still with Rucka and Benes attached; then resolicited for July, now
with Kelly and penciler Ron Adrian, the same creative team the DC website now
gives for issue #7.

In other words, the schedule for SUPERGIRL is currently a big whopping mess, and
it's likely that sales have yet to catch up with the situation. The numbers for
issue #6 probably still reflect the demand for the Loeb/Churchill run rather
than what it ended up as, and it may take a few months before the numbers
reflect the actual material.

(18) GREEN LANTERN
05/2003: Green Lantern #164 -- 44,351
05/2003: Green Lantern #165 -- 37,997
05/2004: Green Lantern #177 -- 33,391

05/2005: Green Lantern: Rebirth #6 (of 6) -- 114,354 (- 0.6%)

06/2005: Green Lantern #2 -- 117,816 (- 30.0%) -- [120,636]

-----------------
6 months: - 14.5%
1 year : - 44.2%
2 years : +136.4%

It looks like GREEN LANTERN has finally found its level after the relaunch, and
it's a respectable one. Although the book has seen a steep decline in the past
year, losing more than half the sales of its first issue, it still sells more
than twice what the previous incarnation did, and that's the standard by which
it has to be measured.

(20) BATMAN
05/2003: Batman #615 -- 144,090
05/2004: Batman #628 -- 74,348

The eight-part crossover with DETECTIVE COMICS continued to gain steam in its
penultimate month: Apart from another solid increase for issue #653, the
previous issue also sold another whopping 9,549 units in May.

(24/27) TEEN TITANS
05/2004: Teen Titans #11 -- 67,813

2 years : + 5.4%

Following the sizeable boost issue #34 received due to being part of the "One
Year Later" event and shipping in two different cover editions, the two TEEN
TITANS issues released in May drop back towards the book's usual orbit. Issue
#34 sold another 7,548 units in May, meanwhile.

(28) SUPERMAN
05/2003: Superman #193 -- 34,927
05/2004: Superman #205 -- 208,105
---------------------------------
05/2005: Superman #216 -- 70,205 (- 37.7%)

SUPERMAN is still in a four-month crossover with ACTION COMICS, before writer
Kurt Busiek takes over full-time with issue #654. Sales are cooling off a bit,
but remain solidly in the upper part of the book's usual range. (The issue from
May 2004 was the second chapter of the Jim Lee run, hence the steep two-year
drop-off.)

(29) DETECTIVE COMICS
05/2003: Detective Comics #782 -- 38,443

The book follows its sister title BATMAN in taking a step up. There was
considerable re-order activity for both previous issues in May, meanwhile: A
second printing of #817 sold another 7,996 copies, while issue #818 moved an
additional 7,749 units.

(30/31) ACTION COMICS
05/2003: Action Comics #803 -- 32,118

ACTION COMICS #837 picked up another 5,454 copies in May. Other than that, see
comments on SUPERMAN... or DETECTIVE COMICS, for that matter. In direct
comparison, the eight-part Batman crossover seems to be holding up slightly
better than its parallel in the Superman titles, but they're unquestionably both
big successes.

(32) CRISIS AFTERMATH: SPECTRE
05/2006: Crisis Aftermath: Spectre #1 (of 3) -- 55,772

This is the second CRISIS AFTERMATH title after CRISIS AFTERMATH: THE BATTLE FOR
BLÜDHAVEN, and it debuts in the same area. Very respectable sales.

(33) ION
04/2006: Ion #1 (of 12) -- 66,453 -- [74,727]
05/2006: Ion #2 (of 12) -- 55,532 (-16.4%)

That's an average drop-off, but ION #1 sold another 8,274 units in May as well,
so don't be surprised if the decline ends rather quickly in a couple of months.

Either way, if we recall that the title character of ION used to shift around
35,000 copies per month of GREEN LANTERN when he was the star of that title not
too long ago, it's hard to view ION as anything but a success.

(34) SECRET SIX
05/2006: Secret Six #1 (of 6) -- 54,961

Another INFINITE CRISIS spin-off debuting with more than decent numbers.

(36) JSA
05/2003: JSA #48 -- 44,019
05/2004: JSA #61 -- 43,086
--------------------------
05/2005: JSA #73 -- 51,326 (+18.1%)

Holding up very well. Nonetheless, a relaunch is in the cards.

(38) SHADOWPACT
05/2006: Shadowpact #1 -- 50,279

Once again, an INFINITE CRISIS spin-off. This time around, it's an ongoing
series starring a bunch of magical characters, written and drawn by Bill
Willingham.

Interestingly, while all of the various new titles coming out of the event --
there are eight at this stage -- have debuted with excellent numbers so far,
their first issues tend to drop in the 50-55K range, the notable exceptions
being 52 and ION. This could be a coincidence, or it could be an indication
that retailers aren't entirely sure yet what to make of those projects. If the
latter is the case, corrections are to be expected in the coming months.

05/2006: Crisis Aftermath: The Battle for Blüdhaven #4 (of 6) -- 48,834 (-1.7%)

These are very gentle drops. The bi-weekly schedule seems to have paid off.

----------------
6 months: +26.5%
1 year : +24.5%

Rock-solid sales. The book has profited immensely from March's "One Year Later"
push, obviously, and it doesn't seem to be a short-term gain.

----------------

The book solidly remains within its usual range. A second printing of March's
"One Year Later" issue sold another 4,241 copies in May.

(49) SUPERGIRL & THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES
05/2003: Legion #20 -- 23,184

----------------
6 months: +35.7%
1 year : +11.1%
2 years : +83.1%

Another title vouching for the success of "One Year Later": SUPERGIRL AND THE
LEGION appears to be clinging on to most of the additional sales gained with its
March issue in May, while April's issue #17 sold another 2,897 units as well.

(55) CHECKMATE
04/2006: Checkmate #1 -- 49,156 -- [55,375]
05/2006: Checkmate #2 -- 41,773 (-15.5%)

It's the same picture as with ION and BLUE BEETLE: an average drop-off for the
second issue, while #1 sells a decent amount of additional copies.

(56) BLUE BEETLE
03/2006: Blue Beetle #1 -- 50,678 -- [69,752]
04/2006: Blue Beetle #2 -- 43,770 (-13.6%) -- [50,190]
05/2006: Blue Beetle #3 -- 41,711 (- 4.7%)

The book's sales appear to be leveling out at a perfectly satisfactory pace,
while the previous issues continue to be heftily re-ordered: Issue #1 sold
another 12,740 units in May, issue #2 another 6,420. BLUE BEETLE looks like a
sleeper hit.

(57) ROBIN
05/2003: Robin #114 -- 22,593

04/2006: Robin #149 -- 37,173 (+ 1.2%)

----------------
6 months: +28.2%
1 year : +38.4%
2 years : -15.6%

The numbers continue to climb, but some of that is sure to be part of the
obligatory temporary increase long-running books tend to see whenever a
so-called "anniversary" issue comes along. March's issue, which was part of the
"One Year Later" campaign, sold another 5,725 copies in May.

(61) GREEN ARROW

----------------
6 months: +19.9%
1 year : +12.3%
2 years : +15.1%

Another climber with strong re-order activity as of "One Year Later." GREEN
ARROW #60 sold another 5,099 units in May, #61 sold another 4,628.

The previous two issues both came with variant editions and #42 didn't, so the

The initial drop-off for this Sam Keith vehicle was harsh, but now sales appear
in a hurry to level out. A good sign.

The book is still comfortably ahead of its pre-"One Year Later" level, but it
looks like one of the less successful titles at this stage, in terms of holding
on to the audience gained in March.

----------------
6 months: + 1.4%
1 year : +23.3%

The numbers settle into a standard decline. We're still miles ahead of the
numbers FIRESTORM was doing prior to its extended crossover with INFINITE
CRISIS.

(103) MAN-BAT
04/2006: Man-Bat #1 (of 5) -- 27,137
05/2006: Man-Bat #2 (of 5) -- 22,273 (-17.9%)

That's a stiff drop-off for a limited series.

(105) JONAH HEX
11/2005: Jonah Hex #1 -- 33,771
12/2005: Jonah Hex #2 -- 26,227 (-22.3%)

05/2006: Jonah Hex #7 -- 21,910 (- 3.8%)

6 months: -35.1%

The decline accelerates. For a western title, these are still perfectly decent
numbers, mind you.

(106) RED SONJA/CLAW: DEVIL'S HANDS (WildStorm)
03/2006: Red Sonja/Claw: Devil's Hands #1 (of 4) -- 33,241

05/2006: Red Sonja/Claw: Devil's Hands #3 (of 4) -- 21,887 (-22.6%)

Ouch, that doesn't look encouraging at all, to put it mildly. Unless a few
thousand copies fell off a truck somewhere. It doesn't seem to be the variant
covers, either, given that each issue got one drawn by Jim Lee.

(110) EX MACHINA (WildStorm)

As long as that five-percent drop doesn't turn into a habit, the book should be
fine.

(135) MANHUNTER

6 months: + 9.9%

The book was meant to be canceled with issue #25, but was recently granted
another arc -- tying in with other DC titles, for maximum effect -- by the
publisher.

(136) BITE CLUB: VAMPIRE CRIME UNIT (Vertigo)
05/2004: Bite Club #2 -- 20,713

The second-issue drop-off is decent enough, but sales remain decidedly behind
those of the original BITE CLUB series.

Obviously, four issues of the weekly 52 series, each selling in excess of 100K,
did wonders for DC's market share and average sales in May. Random issues of
the infrequently shipping juggernauts ALL-STAR BATMAN, SUPERMAN/BATMAN and
SUPERGIRL also helped, of course, as did the finale of INFINITE CRISIS and the
increased sales of most titles which participated in "One Year Later." Quite a
successful month for DC, all things considered.

Vertigo sales remain middling, in contrast, where single issues are concerned.
Material published via the imprint usually has a second leg in the paperback
market, granted, but DC don't seem entirely satisfied with the current state of
things, given that they just appointed Bob Schreck as a new group editor at
Vertigo.

The May issue was Kurt Busiek's final one. It should be interesting to see how
sales react to the creative change.

Ah, by the way: Issue #27 sold another 10,383 units in May. These aren't
re-orders, of course, but just late-shipping copies which didn't make it to
stores on time for the April chart, so they've been added to the initial number.

And far eclipsing both GOTHAM CENTRAL and the last SPECTRE series'

(Heck, wouldn't be surprised if those 2 series sales-per-issue equaled

But for an event that's remaking and reshaping the Wildstorm Universe?

Though the name power for a few of the revamped WS books (WildCATS in

Most complaints come with (a) the art and (b) it doesn't read like the
ol' WARLORD comics (which, I'm surprised to have discovered this week,
was actually DC's best selling comic in the late 1970's).

Wonder how LEGACY (set in a new time frame for Star Wars comics) will
place. I'm guessing the 25 cent special will help kick 'em up over 26K
for a while at least...

Weird to see a book, compared favorably with SANDMAN, so low...

Could it be that sales of the trades are keeping it afloat? I`d imagine
quite a lot of people wait for them rather than pick up the individual
issues for titles like these.

We're probably right near the end of the concept's natural lifespan as a
comics property, barring Gaiman's ongoing return or its reincarnation as
a series of films. We're also apparently at a low-ebb in the popularity
of the non-superhero religion/horror/philosophy genre (have you seen
SWAMP THING's numbers lately?).

What's kept the book afloat for the last few years is an editorial
commitment to telling stories within the Sandmanverse in as close to the
manner the writers intend to tell them as possible, in order not to
alienate the remaining reader base. (While TPB sales may have been a
hoped-for ancillary reason, the hope hasn't translated into sales of
late; ICv2's June GN sales figures don't show any volumes of LUCIFER in
the top 100.) The numbers on LUCIFER, however, may be the last piece of
evidence the business side needs to break this editorial policy.

Future SANDMAN-derived forays -- presuming that there actually -are- any
future SANDMAN derived forays following the collapse in readership here
-- will almost certainly have to demonstrate the ability to keep
circulation figures somewhere much closer to 20K on an ongoing basis, and
likely be subject to a six-month review-and-renewal process regardless of
the story plans the writer has in mind.

Oh, absolutely. It's a telling example of completely different
mindsets present in the readership from when the two series launched.

Looking at the numbers there shows how rock steady the book has been month
to month too.
I'd geuss a lot of books would kill to only shed 3,500 or so over 3 years.

That seems to be the new model for Vertigo success stories. Fables and
Y the Last Man are rock-solid in their ranges as well.

But almost 4600 over two years. Granted, that baseline represented an
anniversary-issue bump, but even so, the book has been bleeding readers
madly from what was, even for a Vertigo ongoing, an extremely low level.

You can rationalize tossing off a few thousand readers if you're still in
the 30-40K range. Not so much if it leaves you on the cusp of four-figure
distro.

> That seems to be the new model for Vertigo success stories.

To "only" shed about a quarter of your readership over the course of a
year? Nearly a third over two?

> Fables and Y the Last Man are rock-solid in their ranges as well.

In much less bathysphere-dependent ranges (both about 2.5x LUCIFER's
circ).

Which, I suppose, is why they're now turning to FABLES in search of a solid
"flagship" franchise, given that the Sandman well appears to be pretty much dry,
as far as new material is concerned.
