[WoH] Wings Of Hommaimise

seems like a great one to see. Where can I get this new dub? If the person
who posted originally or anyone else who is knowledgeable could post a
follow-up or sent me e-mail, I'd appreciate your help...

at the Towne theatre December 2-8. For people living elsewhere, check
your local "art" theatres to see if it will be in your area.
What I am wondering is if it is worth seeing (the dub, that is).

If I had a sig it would say HONNEAMISE eighteen times; I love the film
like some people love Ayukawa Madoka. I'm twenty-four years old and I
talk about HONNEAMISE all the time. When Hiroyuki Yamaga was
twenty-four, he *made* HONNEAMISE...I appreciate the difference, you
see. My *preferences* are not as important as the film itself. My
*opinions* are not as important as the film itself. This dub is not
exactly what I would have done...but it is a good dub. And after seven
years, this good dub is coming to a theater near you. And I ask you to
think about what this film represents, and go see it, even if you
would have preferred a subtitled edition. It would be a terrible irony
if anime fans, of all people, stayed away from this release.
Enrique, my idea that GOLGO 13 is a neglected classic of anime is not
widely shared, and it's understandable that it wasn't to your
taste. But the point I was trying to make with my article on THE
PROFESSIONAL was that the dub made it much harder to convince anyone
of the film's excellence.

I was thinking of its use in Ken Primer's Americanized dub of OTAKU NO
VIDEO, "Fanboy Generation X"...the scene near the beginning when Kubo
and his friends are in a bar:
FIRST GUY: Oh, yeah? Well, I've actually *touched* a girl!
SECOND GUY: What's it like?
FIRST GUY: Soft...and squishy!
As they leave in the elevator, just before Kubo's fateful encounter,
you hear the line again (sort of like Jules's Ezekiel quote in PULP
FICTION, but not quite), followed by:
SECOND GUY: What tape you got there?
FIRST GUY: Cream Lemon...subtitled!
SECOND GUY: Finally we can catch the nuances and complex dialogue!
Hey, Kubo, you wanna watch?
KUBO: Ah, no thanks--I gotta save my wrist for tomorrow.

That all rather depends on your predispositions towards dubs in
general. I have a friend who feels personally offended by the very
concept of dubbing, in that it inherently "changes the creators' intentions"
by substituting the voices they chose originally for new ones. He has a
point, but that doesn't mean what's right for him is right for everyone.
The dub of Honneamise is very close to the original, in terms of
dialogue (there are some changes I would have rather they hadn't made,
but there are also changes that I felt helped it in english), as well as
in the performances. The actors made a good attempt to play it like a
serious live-action drama, so there are very few of what you might call
"cartoony" voices in it.
It's a very good attempt, and quite simply the best dub I've seen
out of the people who did Moldiver and Giant Robo. However, the experience
is still inherently different from seeing it subtitled. I recommend this
version to people who have never seen Honneamise before.
And if you really want to have a subtitled video release of the
film, then call Manga Ent. in Chicago at (312) 751-0020. They aren't
planning one at the moment, but they might reconsider if they feel there'd
be a sizable demand for it.

Isn't this the UK company that refuses the sub anything (and buys the
subbing rights to anything they dub so they can prevent a sub from being
issued)? I think that we will have a long wait to see anything from them in
the original Japanese.

According to the backstory of WoH, the term "The Wings of Honneamise"
refers to a legend which grew out of the lore of the those who lived around
the inland sea (Lake Pitsubo) in what later became the federated kingdom in
the film.
Honneamise was originally the name of a sea bird who lived on the
lake. One day, he decided that he wanted to see God, and vowed to fly up
into Heaven. He flew and flew, passing far above the clouds, until finally
he found himself floating in a space of blue sky, where up and down no
longer had any meaning. God saw the bird and was angered by its impudence,
and cursed it as punishment. The bird was transformed into a fish, who
would live in the lake and be able to look up at the sky, but would never
again be able to return there.
This legend was used by the public relations people in the Honneamano
government as part of the PR campaign centered around selling the idea of a
"Space Force" to the general public.

Genius girl translator Neil "Jung Freud" Nadelman explains the meaning
behind the name while baka boy non-translator Carl "And Lunk's in
jail, because I was young, and needed someone!" Horn explains his
theory behind why the name was spelled as it was. There is a
tremendous amount of background information about the characters and
their world that is only hinted at in the film, rich as it is (for
example, the legend cited above is not mentioned in the actual movie). Neil
and I hope to eventually incorporate this sort of thing into a
homepage for THE WINGS OF HONNEAMISE, because, you know--otaku have to
have everything. Did yo. It's the details like that which should come
out in force--why should GUNDAM fans have all the fun? :-)
